I would like to buy a bigger house in a few years time but it would mean getting a bigger mortgage. Got me thinking what is the norm?

I’ll go first
39 years old
£3000 joint salary
£250k mortgage

OP posts:

joint take home £3100 pcm
mortgage £100k left (only fixed until next year 😬)
live in affluent SE area where we are one of the “poorer” families. Have to constantly give my head a wobble to remind myself how lucky we are!

£100k joint income
££150k left on mortgage
Great pension + husband has full military pension

Joint take home around 4k pcm
Mortgage 188k left, £730 pcm fixed until 2027. Term is... well, may as well be forever 😁

Outgoings can be low. No kids, so no childcare, just one very spoiled cat between us

It’s very odd that most
of these wages are way above the average. What jobs are people doing?!

Banking though I work really long hours and work/life balance is poor.

@Mortgage62 consulting and healthcare in London. Our mortgage and outgoings are huge though to live in our area.

Joint income £9k
Mortgage £120k left

Live in Scotland so that gives us a lot of disposable income which mostly goes into pensions, savings and on holidays.

But we still have 2 children to put through uni to come.

VIPNanny · 14/10/2023 10:58

Late 20’s.
I am mainly self-employed and a sole earner so it varies but in general 5-10k per month depending on the month. (A little over 8K currently)
I am mortage- free (though have a small interest-free private debt, for some renovation work on the place that should hopefully be paid off by the end of 2024 and amounts to less than 30k), and I have started looking at potentially getting a mortgage on a second property to rent out (but that likely won’t happen for the next two years, as just bought and pretty much emptied my accounts so need to build a deposit back up).

londonguild · 14/10/2023 11:12

Joint income 12.5k
Mortgage 900,000
Age 32

Plan to overpay the mortgage soon!

I'm in banking and DH is in data engineering.

ASCCM · 14/10/2023 12:27

I honestly can’t believe how low these averages are and how people can afford to live anywhere!

Net joint monthly £5k
£160k mortgage left

Twotwinpeaks · 14/10/2023 12:59

Business Coaching here - generates 1.3M a year with 45% net profit. I take a lot of measured risks. Didn’t come from money. Uni dropout. Don’t work harder than a nurse or teacher tbh. My skillset is in demand and I have a very niche market who have the money to invest in their development.

staycaysandvacays · 14/10/2023 13:35

£7k pcm combined with DH
£220k left on mortgage but our first house, we will be upsizing in a few years

Melonhead89 · 14/10/2023 14:10

when working full time around 65k a year
4 bed house - no mortgage but I didn’t buy it.

NC543210 · 14/10/2023 14:35

Joint monthly 7k ish.
Mortgage left 230k.

We do want to move to the final one though next year, but we would end up with a mortgage of around 500/600k. Which doesn't seem sensible given our age. Conflicted.

Albioncreed · 14/10/2023 14:40

5k ish per month after tax and pension
100k left on mortgage.

in forever home though: and could happily downsize to a flat with no mortgage

nodentist · 14/10/2023 14:56

Honestly, christ.

This makes me feel so bad about our combined £3800-4000 after tax (depending on month). Surely someone else is earning this kind of figure.

Dogon · 14/10/2023 15:04

Joint salary 52k
Mortgage paid off (hope to move to a bigger property though so hopefully we'll have another some day!)

Evaka · 14/10/2023 15:05

Joint net take home 10k

We rent at 1600pm because a two bed in London would = mortgage of around 400k and we'd have to work till we're 70. Instead we're going to save like mad and buy a small retirement cottage in West of Ireland outright, all going well..

Massively above average. Top 10% at least.

It's no wonder many posters are clueless as to the harsh reality of life on benefits on some threads.

Stringervest · 14/10/2023 16:38

Joint net income about £7.5k
£380k left on the mortgage, £1,290 pcm on a very good fixed rate but we are overpaying as it will rocket when the fix expires.

We seem to have comparatively high mortgage debt compared with many others our age which surprises me given house prices.
