I would like to buy a bigger house in a few years time but it would mean getting a bigger mortgage. Got me thinking what is the norm?

I’ll go first
39 years old
£3000 joint salary
£250k mortgage

@Abbimae I can't speak for other but we're in software/tech.

I mentioned up thread our grads start on £35k gross (literally straight out of uni). With the expectation of being on £50k gross in 2 years. And now I think about it that doesn't include the bonus so it's probably more like £37k going up to £53k in 2 years.

Very fortunate however unmarried and house is not in my name plus I earn very significantly less than DP (we just pay bills 50/50) so I'm not as wealthy as it sounds.

@Abbimae Higher education. The amount is DH wage plus one of my pensions and 2k per month from very safe investments. There is more potential income but it’s tied in to higher risk stuff and not reliable.

Higher education pay is ok but no six figure salary, pension is good. We made money because we are number crunching nerds, never used a financial advisor and enjoyed playing the markets from a young age.

I have a large ish 3 bed old semi detached. In the north west so a decent salary & house prices ok. I have two children but eldest is 17 and hoping to get an apprenticeship so I'm hoping he'll be able to pay a bit of board.

My outgoings are very low so I actually don’t go without, even though my incoming seems very low in comparison to others on here.

Around 5.5k joint.
36k left on mortgage.

We are having our first child and we will be moving. Current property is on a busy road and has no front garden.

This is an interesting thread, when the interest rates were low we were very driven in regards to over paying the mortgage. The idea of moving and increasing what we owe makes me feel like we will be falling behind coming into our 40s. I think it the reality check I needed.

Not everyone is employed by employers who pay out bonuses.

It’s very odd that most
of these wages are way above the average. What jobs are people doing?!

I know, some of them are massive. I must admit if I had a high flying job that paid so much I don’t think I’d even be on MN as I’d be too busy/engaged in other more interesting stuff. I’m only on here because I have a very low pressure, low income (in comparison) lifestyle 😁

£3500-£4000 at a guess (husband is self employed).
Paid off mortgage earlier this year.

I'd like to move but we've no plans to.
