AIBU to take granddaughter to hospital this evening or will it wait?

She's been having headaches regularly this year. She describes pounding and pain in eye. GP said eye test - optician immediately said that she could see a large prescription. DG had glasses then three months later had another checkup and a stronger pair prescribed. She's due back in December. So I'm assuming that they're increasing the strength of the glasses in increments.

Her headaches have persisted. This current one she's had since last Friday. I picked her up from school on Monday and could tell that each footstep was making her wince with pain. She couldn't sleep Monday night because of pain and feeling sick. We've been alternating paracetamol and ibuprofen for pain relief. Saw GP on Tuesday who said it was nothing sinister but was referring her to paediatrician. This evening she was complaining of eye and nose pain and appeared to be light sensitive. She's woken in pain a couple of hours after she went to bed and her eyelid is drooping.

Is this worth a trip to A&E?

We're very worried.

I'm bloody hysterical at the moment.

OP I am so so sorry your family is going through all this pain and suffering. I hope you all find the answers you are seeking. Sending all my best wishes to you and your family and to the people who are having a go; i truly hope you know how your words can really hurt people

We rang 111 Thursday night.

It didn't get us anywhere!

I saw Dita73's post. She did not call the OP a liar. I believe it was deleted because she stated she was a clinician, and mumsnet always gets a bit twitchy about directly stating that (though many of us hint).

@MyOtherCarIsAPorsche I feel like reporting your post because you're justifying yourself to total strangers. Stop! You don't ever need to justify yourself. Your DD is amazing because she has you as her example.

I don't know what to suggest. You can't do what you can't do 😥

I remember France being navy blue!

No it's more of a cornflower blue.

Dita73 · 14/10/2023 22:30

@nocoolnamesleft thank you but I’m not a clinician. My exact post said “this can’t be real”. I had genuine doubts as it seems crazy that a child in pain with horrific symptoms isn’t being treated seriously. I didn’t say the OP was a liar

Apologies, I must have remembered the wrong post.

Don’t feel hysterical OP - it’s quite possible that the doctors thus far are right and this pain has a benign cause. It’s simply that a scan is needed to rule the worse case scenarios out. Try and stay calm for your DD and don’t berate yourself for being where you are. No-one could have foreseen this.

Every day - I'm torn.

I really didn't want to come here this weekend. But is was so important to my husband - who I didn't know liked sheep.

Sheep are pretty awesome, so for the first time I'm with your DH, but the timing is supremely unhelpful.

Thank you.

I needed grounding

I think all the other children and situations can wait, your granddaughter needs a scan and that’s really the priority. Is there any way that could happen?

MyOtherCarIsAPorsche · 14/10/2023 22:41

@Ariela

🥰

I needed grounding - was to you.

Thanks. I'm less hysterical. 🥹

I brought my knitting here - but I'm shaking too much tonight.

It's a patchwork blanket.

Yes - you're right.

Can't think of anyone on my side of the family who doesn't have migraines.

I hope your granddaughter gets a scan soonish, but it does seem could be eyesight related. I wonder if the lower sun isn't helping her and for now would wearing a wide brimmed hat help?

The knitting looks great. I love the colours. I do think you should show us more, and maybe pick the needles back up? After all there's only so much sheep you can do without joining in I guess?

Grrrrdarling · 14/10/2023 22:54

@MyOtherCarIsAPorsche Jesus you guys are going through it.
i can’t help with what the issue could be with your GD but having suffered caffeine induced migraines for over 27yrs I know how hard it can be to get help with them.
I found out caffeine was the trigger myself by pure accident. I was shocked to read how poisonous it is to our bodies in large quantities & based on the amount I was consuming & how much more I had became to consume over the years, loved a VERY strong tea & coffee, it made sense.

My go to treatments were:

  • ice pack on head or back of neck
  • Peg between thumb & fire finger
  • dark room
  • applying pressure to the front of my face with the palms of my hands.
Some say putting your feet in hot water, as hot as you can deal with, works too but it is not something I have ever tried.

I really hope you get to the bottom of the problem & hope one of the things that helped me will help your GD find some relief ❤

Yes - she's been reacting to light. When my daughter said this to the optician they tried to sell her prescription sunglasses today.

My blanket will take some time.

@MyOtherCarIsAPorsche no medical professional or optician knows she has a new symptom of double vision and falling. That needs discussing with someone tonight. We have all suggested A&E, but I am only suggesting 111 so you can discuss this with someone trained who will also tell you she needs seeing in hospital.
Your life really is full on and sometimes it’s hard to see things when so much crap is happening/have a different bar for getting help.

But like other medical professionals have said here, new double vision today and falling needs seeing, at the moment no medical professional knows this has happened to her.

All the posters giving advice about sunglasses and prescription and migraine is great. After she’s been seen in hospital. A 7 years old describing double vision when they don’t know what that is is crazily worrying.
