AIBU to take granddaughter to hospital this evening or will it wait?

She's been having headaches regularly this year. She describes pounding and pain in eye. GP said eye test - optician immediately said that she could see a large prescription. DG had glasses then three months later had another checkup and a stronger pair prescribed. She's due back in December. So I'm assuming that they're increasing the strength of the glasses in increments.

Her headaches have persisted. This current one she's had since last Friday. I picked her up from school on Monday and could tell that each footstep was making her wince with pain. She couldn't sleep Monday night because of pain and feeling sick. We've been alternating paracetamol and ibuprofen for pain relief. Saw GP on Tuesday who said it was nothing sinister but was referring her to paediatrician. This evening she was complaining of eye and nose pain and appeared to be light sensitive. She's woken in pain a couple of hours after she went to bed and her eyelid is drooping.

Is this worth a trip to A&E?

We're very worried.

Have you called 111? Having been to A&E this afternoon I would say wait for the morning. Evenings in emergency departments are horrible and really you want the specialist doctors to be working. Bless her , I hope she is ok.

Daffidale · 12/10/2023 22:27

It does sound migraine-y or cluster headache. Really surprised the GO hasn’t discussed that. I get raging migraines in clusters occasionally - having a headache for days is not as unusual as some doctors seem to think it is. However I don’t know anything about how the present in children, and would be concerned with a child as young as 7

I would speak to 111 (or try the online version) and see what they recommend.

You could also look up migraine treatment in children for suggestions for short term relief. Things like cold or heat packs, dark room rest, etc

I would go to A&E tonight. Did she have the eye scans/pictures and pressures at the opticians?

Yes
Mum rang optician yesterday and they compared scans from June and September, which they said were healthy.
But eyelid has drooped this evening.

CatOnAMushroom · 12/10/2023 22:37

Unequal pupil sizes can indicate a major issue with the brain and needs assessing asap. Please take her in now

LittleMonks11 · 12/10/2023 22:37

If one pupil is smaller than the other then she really needs to be seen asap.

Hugosauras · 12/10/2023 22:48

Could she have had COVID? That can cause awful headaches. Also, is she a teenager? I suffered awful migraines at that age due to hormonal shifts.

Ratfinkstinkypink · 12/10/2023 22:50

If the pupil thing is new she needs seeing ASAP.

MyOtherCarIsAPorsche · 12/10/2023 22:50

I'm just nipping round to their house.

111 are sending ambulance

Agree that she needs assessing tonight. It's very hard to tell anything over the internet(!), but I'd want a pretty reassuring examination to not be thinking of scanning her head. Headache waking her from sleep is concerning, as is the drooping eye.

MedievalWell · 12/10/2023 22:54

Best to get it checked out. Hope all goes ok x

Notcookie · 12/10/2023 22:55

Glad she is getting seen.

TheShellBeach · 12/10/2023 23:02

Agree that the uneven pupil sizes are a concern.

Whoopsmahoot · 12/10/2023 23:03

Sounds very like cluster headaches. Typical symptoms are behind an eye but eye and nose on that side can run. That won’t happen with migraines. In some cases can get more common around September time reaching a peak by Xmas and gradually improve and disappear around March. No ones knows why. Horrific things, they don’t call them suicide headaches for nothing. My child has a positive diagnosis for them. Most common first thing on waking.

Onabench · 12/10/2023 23:04

With those symptoms I’d definitely go now
