About this message on the front of a bus?

This morning in town a bus passed me with the phrase Mash'alla displayed on the front instead of the bus number and destination. AIBU to have found it unsettling?
We're in an area with a large Pakistani Muslim population and there were small pockets of celebration following the initial attacks on Israel (nothing violent or disruptive, just horns/cheering/Palestinian flag waving).
If I were to complain to the bus company (I won't - I don't have time) it would be on the grounds that it's unprofessional for bus drivers to be proclaiming their political or religious beliefs on the front of their busses. But if I'm honest my discomfort was about more than that - I wouldn't have felt as unsettled if the message had been "vote Tory" or "Happy Diwali" even though neither of those reflect my personal beliefs any more than Mash'alla does.
Am I being reasonable or Islamaphobic?

Ah, you mean brown people with beards.

FFS - I said ‘young men’. I know that British born men are drawn into this - apparently the criminal justice system is where many become radicalised and most of these would be ethnically European. And although I in no way feel I need to defend myself about this, it is usually young white men who scare me on the tube looking shifty like this- it is that certain kind of beard on them that is the clincher.

Speak for yourself, I don't live in England.

Well, Britain in general then. But you get the point.

autumnpleasestay · 12/10/2023 17:42

I'd find that inappropriate, given recent events. If you can make an anonymous complaint, it does no harm to let the company know that people may be interpreting it a certain way (regardless of the intention).

Zebedee55 · 12/10/2023 17:44

Buses should only display where they are going. Nothing else.

NinaBeee · 12/10/2023 17:44

@CowboyJoanna and England is full of people from many different cultures and religions.

Just because someone shouldn't 'have' to do something is completely different to choosing not to do something if it might be misunderstood given the current atrocities. As a PP said, the inference behind the message that the OP saw could easily be misconstrued. Hands up - I obviously misread it by taking it at its literal translation.

Multifaith is a complex area and not everybody can be expected to understand all aspects of every different faith and religion. Under the current circumstances, wouldn't it just be prudent to not have what appears to be such 'cryptic' messages banded around on public transport at the moment?

No, muslims shouldn't change they should go about their business do you expect any other faith to change their habits at the moment?

MrTiddlesTheCat · 12/10/2023 17:33

Apart from the person who saw it saying they've never seen it on buses in their town before.

I can’t see that lots of posters have said that this is common practice, and if they have, then it isn’t true.

E.g. London with its thousands of buses. I am a Londoner who has never owned a car and so have been on countless bus journeys, and I have never ever seen this.

Jewish school children are removing their blazers, covering logos and removing kippahs.

So they are having to change their habits at the moment.

Take a look at the shops in Golders Green and understand why.

Glitterdavies · 12/10/2023 17:50

Thats not muslims fault though is it, or do you think it is?

And this is for self-preservation. It just goes to show how non-equivalent the situation is.

If a Jesus Army bus, or Greek Orthodox camper van or a Catholic tandem pushbike was trundling around right now with "God Willed It" written on it, then yes, I would expect tact and diplomacy to overrule, regardless of the faith or religion behind it.

Can you tell me which particular massacre has happened in the UK that mean they should alter their buses? And you would genuinely want them to repaint all the buses (also painted on).

You really can't think of any islamist attacks in the UK, and you missed the massacre in Israel on Saturday which the Hamas spokesman on Newsnight blamed on the UK? And you didn't hear the call put out by the leader of Hamas for sympathisers across the world to rise up and fight against jews and anyone who supports them? Or are you just being disingenous?

Who has stopped you from eating pork, and how? Who has stopped us gays enjoying life? Who has forcrd you to put up arabic signs? Are you aware that a significant proportion of Jews in Israel will speak arabic.

Some Subways in the UK no longer stock pork, and only offer halal meat.

Many Muslim parents have protested LGB education in schools. Half of all British Muslims believe it should be a crime to be gay.

Hospitals, airports, train stations and doctors around the UK have signs up in Arabic. Our language is English.

Half of all British Muslims think homosexuality should be illegal, poll finds

Survey for Channel 4 documentary finds 23% want sharia law but most feel strong connection with Britain

@therealcookiemonster ... or maybe the driver just had a baby and wanted to express gratitude

That was the first thought that came to my mind.

So you think hamas which isn’t in the UK, means arabic shouldn’t be displayed in the UK, are you agreeing with hamas and you think the UK is responsible?

Would you like to enlighten me as to which islamist massacre thats happened in the UK in the last few weeks? I’m fairly certain nothing has happened since I left the UK a few weeks ago.

Have we got to ban Russian as well, because obviously all Russian words are anti-Ukrainian.

Its because there's money there, go to a different subway if you want your bacon that bad.

BTW, I doubt their immigrants anymore, there's a lot of British born Muslims and converts asking for halal options

Loads of white people are protesting against LGBT in school aswell mainly for the T.

Finteq · 12/10/2023 18:05

Like stopping us from eating pork, stopping gay people from living and enjoying life, forcing us to put up Arabic signs.

Not sue who is stopping ypu personally from eating pork🙄

And sorry you are being forced to put up with arabic signs. I'm sure it's very difficult. 😕

Are you really eating that many subways and unable to source pork from elsewhere? Yeah, many christian parents protest too, many posters on MN are extremely out spoken about children being taught about LGBT people, or is that okay as they’re likely to be white? Hospitals etc also have other languages, are they okay, or is it just arabic thats the problem? You’ll get a shock if you go to Wales.

Free2 · 12/10/2023 18:06

I think it’s the celebrations in the UK streets at atrocious behaviour in the Middle East which calls for sensitivity and forethought. Doesn’t have to be a massacre in the UK.

Free2 · 12/10/2023 18:07

In most of the takeaways near me they only have ‘turkey ham’ and halal meat.

Conkersinautumn · 12/10/2023 18:08

If it is a local bus company then yes, it's inappropriate to be whacking religious sentiments on it, religion should be entirely private and not rubbed in peoples faces.

You’ll get a bit of a shock when streets are soon covered in council provided and publicly funded christmas lights go up everywhere.

Do you not have supermarkets where you live, or do you exclusively eat takeaway meat?
