About this message on the front of a bus?

Iop · 12/10/2023 14:18

This morning in town a bus passed me with the phrase Mash'alla displayed on the front instead of the bus number and destination. AIBU to have found it unsettling?
We're in an area with a large Pakistani Muslim population and there were small pockets of celebration following the initial attacks on Israel (nothing violent or disruptive, just horns/cheering/Palestinian flag waving).
If I were to complain to the bus company (I won't - I don't have time) it would be on the grounds that it's unprofessional for bus drivers to be proclaiming their political or religious beliefs on the front of their busses. But if I'm honest my discomfort was about more than that - I wouldn't have felt as unsettled if the message had been "vote Tory" or "Happy Diwali" even though neither of those reflect my personal beliefs any more than Mash'alla does.
Am I being reasonable or Islamaphobic?

This thread is the worst kind of Islamophobia.

Pakistani Muslims in Pakistan have Mash’Allah permanently written on their vehicle, it’s nothing to do with celebrating killings.

Shame on you, OP.

And no one believe you have have Pakistani friends. No one.

People can display what they like on their own private vehicles.

A public bus is a totally different matter.

MN posters are always being told to “trust their instincts”

Yet here you are shaming OP for trusting hers and thinking something was off about this appearing on the day that it did and when there were widespread ‘celebrations’ of the Hamas massacres.

So muslims should stop saying their everyday saying because of something that happened that has nothing to do with them?

Would you tell jews to change their ad campaigns in a Jewish area?

Nobody is telling anyone to stop saying anything, just don't put it on bus destination display screens!

As it currently stands, there have been no Jewish terrorist attacks in the UK, no British born Jews stating a belief that gentiles deserve to be murdered for not following their faith, no equivalent to fatwas issued by Jewish people.

The bus is operated by a private company.

We have no idea what route it had returned from.

It not islamaphobic for people to be alarmed on seeing a new display of an arabic/muslim word which celebrates the will of god playing out in the immediate aftermath of horrific attack on civilians by islamic terrorists.

This is my immediate view but maybe the op needs to find out more on context and update

You are Islamophobic if you have a problem with it. Local buses display adverts for local areas.

Is has nothing to do with whats going on in Israel.

It was not an advert - it was not on the side of the bus, it was on the front where normally a destination/number would be.

Oh you know them personally do you, and their intent?

Whatever it means, it's not acceptable. If it's a service bus it should have number and destination. If it's out of service it should say Out Of Service. Bus drivers aren't allowed to put whatever message they like on the front of buses!

So a muslim owned bus company isn’t allowed to display a phrase that many muslims will use mutilple times a day. How do you feel about buses that put happy christmas on the screens in december?

I think you are fine. It just goes to show how nervous people are and how White Rose Travel bus should have thought a bit and maybe put a different message up until the British reaction to recent events calms down.

I think it shows the general islamophobia muslims have to endure on a daily basis. And how they're expected to predict what the white man/ woman wants them to do next.

What if someone got scared of a headscarf- should they have envisaged this and not worn it.

Already another poster said they were nervous around people with beards. Maybe they should change their grooming habits to appease you too?

And events such as this never 'calm down'. There's always another reason to fear a brown face with a beard.

Yeah, I’m sure when they started putting it on their buses years ago, their hope was that one day it could be used against israel.

There's no evidence is new,and lots of posters have said this is something commonly done on public transport by muslims.

sillyme563 · 12/10/2023 17:28

OP doesn't know if it was a private bus or not, or whether it was hired for a wedding or what. All OP knows is that it's Muslim and therefore bad.

It is very annoying having what I said cherry-picked. I am not nervous of men with beards. I am nervous of young men, looking shifty, holding their rucksac in front of themselves, on a tube train, and if they have a certain kind of beard. That is much more specific than ‘people with beards’.

YNBU they would never approve of a 'Jesus saves' poster on a bus so why should they put Arabic or whatever it was on a bus. England is a Christian country believe it or not.

Come to N.I. & you'll see that sort of thing all over Translink busses.

In the UK in December in the run up to Christmas, just fine. In a muslim country in the immediate aftermath of Christmas day massacre of muslims, not so fine.

PickAChew · 12/10/2023 17:31

Is this on the destination blind? The messages on those have to be uploaded into the display system, so it wouldn't have been down to an individual driver.

100 jews have left to go and fight in Israel. (Check the news papers) Thats their holy war their going to. I don't think Israel needs anymore fighters as they have over 300,000 at the Gazan boarder.

If muslims were at the airports trying to get into Palestine to fight I'm sure the media would be calling them terrorists.

Apart from the person who saw it saying they've never seen it on buses in their town before.

Free2 · 12/10/2023 17:34

The context is important. For example, there are certain songs that shouldn’t be played on hospital radio, certain adverts that shouldn’t be displayed near a crematorium and so on. White Rose should have been more savvy.

Purpleyogamat · 12/10/2023 17:34

Glitterdavies · 12/10/2023 17:11

Yeah thats islamophobic to think that, muslims don't have to change their day to day business because of what happened in Israel and to think that they are doing it for that is Islamophobic.

Just because someone shouldn't 'have' to do something is completely different to choosing not to do something if it might be misunderstood given the current atrocities. As a PP said, the inference behind the message that the OP saw could easily be misconstrued. Hands up - I obviously misread it by taking it at its literal translation.

Multifaith is a complex area and not everybody can be expected to understand all aspects of every different faith and religion. Under the current circumstances, wouldn't it just be prudent to not have what appears to be such 'cryptic' messages banded around on public transport at the moment?

CowboyJoanna · 12/10/2023 17:35

NinaBeee · 12/10/2023 15:19

I think you are being unreasonable. I've personally travelled to many Arab countries and learnt some Arabic. MashaAllah means "God has willed it" - people say this to beautiful things. Any time Muslims see something they like, or something they find lovely or beautiful. They say MashaAllah
It's not a bad word, in fact it's the same as saying God Bless It. Hope that helps. Definitely do some research online, especially with what's going on. The media hates the truth.

But we live in England, not an Arab country.

Can you tell me which particular massacre has happened in the UK that mean they should alter their buses? And you would genuinely want them to repaint all the buses (also painted on).
