About this message on the front of a bus?

This morning in town a bus passed me with the phrase Mash'alla displayed on the front instead of the bus number and destination. AIBU to have found it unsettling?
We're in an area with a large Pakistani Muslim population and there were small pockets of celebration following the initial attacks on Israel (nothing violent or disruptive, just horns/cheering/Palestinian flag waving).
If I were to complain to the bus company (I won't - I don't have time) it would be on the grounds that it's unprofessional for bus drivers to be proclaiming their political or religious beliefs on the front of their busses. But if I'm honest my discomfort was about more than that - I wouldn't have felt as unsettled if the message had been "vote Tory" or "Happy Diwali" even though neither of those reflect my personal beliefs any more than Mash'alla does.
Am I being reasonable or Islamaphobic?

You’ll get a bit of a shock when streets are soon covered in council provided and publicly funded christmas lights go up everywhere.

Christmas is a celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. As commemorated in a Christian country.

Not a celebration of Jewish genocide.

So you think hamas which isn’t in the UK, means arabic shouldn’t be displayed in the UK, are you agreeing with hamas and you think the UK is responsible?

Would you like to enlighten me as to which islamist massacre thats happened in the UK in the last few weeks? I’m fairly certain nothing has happened since I left the UK a few weeks ago.

Have we got to ban Russian as well, because obviously all Russian words are anti-Ukrainian.

So you're being disingenuous. OK got it. Crack on.

Yes, Christmas and the stupid diatribe that surrounds it is very repulsive. It's an 'opinion' that would cobdem me to domination yet I've never broken a single law. Vile fairytale for the susceptible

I have lived in Muslim countries and visited many more. It was really common to see "Mashallah" on buses. The gist of the meaning was " may God protect". - a wish to not have an accident.

It would also be said when someone had admired a beautiful child - with the colloquial meaning " may God protect", because admiring beauty could be seen as tempting fate ( or djinn) to make something bad happen.

I didn't associate it at all with the literal meaning of "God willed it", any more than I associate someone saying "Goodbye" with its original literal meaning of "God be with you".

Mashallah generally has a good meaning, invoking a wish for wellness and protection.

I'm not Muslim myself.

Here's some info about the colloquial ( rather than literal) use of the term:

Thats not muslims fault though is it, or do you think it is?

Well I have to wonder when a muslim "friend" of my DD's has just told her she can't talk to her anymore.

We're complete atheists. I'm now spending this evening attempting to explain to DD why her friend said what she did.

Not a celebration of Jewish genocide.

There have been winter festivals for a long time, even pre the christianity story, so lights up in winter don't really need to have a religious theme at all.

Do you not have supermarkets where you live, or do you exclusively eat takeaway meat?

Just giving an example. The choice has been taken away. The pizza restaurant gives the ‘option’ of vegan cheese, but not the ‘option’ of halal meat.
If restaurants only had vegan cheese, would you say ‘you can go to the supermarket and by your own cheese’?

The poster stated that religion shouldn’t be rubbed into peoples face, said poster doesn’t seem to mind other religions being rubbed into peoples faces. A bus displaying a phrase for years is not celebrating genocide, just as christians during wwII weren’t, despite a lot of nazi’s being christians.

Some Subways in the UK no longer stock pork, and only offer halal meat.

Businesses can choose what they want to sell. Its your choice if you want to buy food from there. Other outlets are available.

It is very annoying having what I said cherry-picked. I am not nervous of men with beards. I am nervous of young men, looking shifty, holding their rucksac in front of themselves, on a tube train, and if they have a certain kind of beard. That is much more specific than ‘people with beards’.

You are MUCH more likely to be attacked by a random white man in this country than a Muslim suicide bomber. I still have nightmares over what I witnessed on 7/7, and I will never ever forget that day and the period after it, but I know that I have nothing to fear from 99.9% of Muslim men.

I have both Jewish and Muslim friends. I have friends who have family and loved one in both Israel and Palestine. I feel sickened and heartbroken for both.

Yes. It is a festival which takes place at the darkest time of year. Celebrating Jesus’ birth was just placed on top of the earlier pagan festival, in the same way that the pagan gods at the Pantheon in Rome were replaced with Christian saints.

Yes, of course I would. Just as if I go to a restaurant that doesn’t serve vegetarian meals, rather than being childish and saying I have been prevented from being vegetarian as all the meals have meat/fish, I go elsewhere to eat/buy food.

Subway are individually owned franchises. If the owner of any specific franchise wants to only stock foods which meat their own cultural beliefs, they are free to do so. Same with all kinds of food / restaurant businesses. Our local Subway doesn't serve pork because it's non-Kosher.

Spoiled for choice of restaurants I see.

No, not at all, where I live many restaurants either don’t have vegetarian options, or if they do they contain something I’m allergic to, I’m a very awkward on to feed.

Finteq · 12/10/2023 18:25

Or going to a vegetarian / vegan only place and stating they are forcing you not to eat meat.

If it didn't make them money they would stop doing it.

Well this change has been gradual and now it’s ‘turkey ham’ everywhere. Turkey isn’t ham. So I don’t get it. If people never experienced a Hawaiian pizza because their religion disallowed it, why the need to take away the option of Hawaiian pizza for those who have enjoyed it, replacing it with something different? A Turkey and pineapple pizza is not a Hawaiian pizza.

So go get one somewhere else.

In nothern Nigeria you'd often see this painted on lorries - its like a prayer (or possibly thanks) for a safe journey. Not sure it's particularly sinister tbh.

In the UK you can no longer buy ham, or get pizzas that have ham on? As someone who has never eaten meat, just curious to know.
