For me its after every wear (apart from jeans and joggers which is around 2-3 wears)

However this means i have a never ending flow of laundry

How many wears from freshly laundered would you go.

Knickers and socks every time I wear them. Tops and dresses usually every time but that's only because I sweat a lot and I'm a clumsy eater so often slop something down them. Everything else as and when needed. No specific rules.

usernother · 12/10/2023 19:48

Wendysfriend · 12/10/2023 18:56

We turn underwear inside out so we get two wears out of them. Everything else gets febreezed, sure you're walking outside and giving your clothes a good airing.

Really?

Growlybear83 · 12/10/2023 19:52

I'm similar to the OP. I wash everything after one wear apart from jeans and other trousers which I wear twice. I also try to get two wears out of cashmere jumpers because I'm always really scared of ruining them in the wash.

ActDottie · 12/10/2023 19:52

Mostly after every wear for tops

Trousers/leggings less often but depends if the dogs have jumped up on me with muddy paws!

Jumpers/cardigans maybe after every wear but depends how sweaty I get on them

Bertiesmum3 · 12/10/2023 19:55

Socks/knickers every day we have clean
work wear both wear shorts & t-shirts every day we have clean
When we’re not at home we’ll wear shorts twice unless it’s really hot and it’s every day we have clean, tops go in the wash every day
We have clean towels everyday after our shower/baths.
Night wear I change every other day as well as bedding in the summer, not as frequent in the colder months

RudolfsLeftToe · 12/10/2023 19:57

Undies, pjs, gym wear, vests worn under jumpers I’ll wash after one wear.
I’ll wear jeans, jumpers, hoodies, dresses (unless they’re really clingy or it’s really hot) 2-3 times.
For my DC the only thing they rewear is a hoodie every now and again.
I also wash everyone’s towels after one use but that’s because I’ve suffered from skin infections in the past so it’s just become a habit.

AfterWeights · 12/10/2023 19:59

Knickers/ socks - every wear
All other clothing - when it’s dirty or smells

This. Clothes really, really don't need washing more for the sake of it, they just get worn, its so wasteful.

dontforgetme · 12/10/2023 20:05

Depends where I have been or what the weather is like. I truly sweat like a pig so during the summer every wear. Colder months bottoms and jumpers every 2/3. Underwear after every wear.

namethisbird · 12/10/2023 20:09

All clothes - after each wear
Towels / face cloths - after each use
bed linen - once per week.

I do at least one/two washing load per day to keep on top of everything.

I think I've washed my cashmere jumper once in five years

megletthesecond · 12/10/2023 20:38

It depends how active you are. Gym and running kit, after every wear. This mounts up if you are an active family.
Office work clothes, after every wear as its 2 miles each way on foot.
Home tops, after every wear, always dropping something down myself.
Home tracksuit bottoms I can get away with half a week. Jeans, I have several pairs but don't wash for weeks at a time.

gentlemum · 12/10/2023 20:52

For me, only when they start to smell or have stains/are dirty. So tops it would be multiple wears. Jeans I hardly ever wash really, they don't smell, don't get dirty and they get misshapen and colour fades with washing.

For my toddler everything goes in the wash every day as it's normally visibly dirty.

For husband he puts every bloody thing in the wash even if he's only worn it for a couple of hours which infuriates me. So normally two outfits per day (work clothes then what he changes into when he gets home)!

Towels every other week. Bedsheets and pyjamas every other week. Underwear (except bras) daily.

AvengedQuince · 12/10/2023 20:53

You can be active but not sweaty, we walk miles but would only need to change after an hour of intensive exercise.

Socks and knicks, one wear. And everything else, when it smells or visibly dirty. I am working from home today and yesterday, and wearing exactly the same tshirt, leggings and fleece as yesterday. it ruins your clothes faster to wash them more, plus electricity and water cost!

This. I really don't understand this washing everything after one wear nonsense. I'm not in the UK, and we have advice on TV about not washing garments so frequently.

MN is a strange place, one minute posters are panicking about the planet, the next they are happily admitting to wasting resources.

Moonbowlspoon · 12/10/2023 21:18

I just throw everything out after first wear and buy new.

It's really not good for clothes to wash them too often. I just don't understand why so many people feel that after one wear clothes need washing. Of course if they get dirty or you sweat a lot but otherwise it's just pointless.

As well as MN being full of people worried about the planet, it is also pretty full of people moaning about the cost of electric although obviously not enough to stop doing needless washing.

newYear10 · 12/10/2023 11:49

We have a dryer so we wash a lot!

I think this is part of the problem too. Tumble driers encourage people to wash clothes more than necessary

TheChosenTwo · 12/10/2023 22:09

Exercise stuff/underwear - after every wear.
I wfh 4 days a week and will happily wear the same joggers all 4 days, same sweatshirt but clean T-shirts. Office clothes will be washed after one wear as it’s train/tube and generally smells.
As for the rest of the time, I wash it as and when I feel it needs washing.
we are a house of 4/5 people depending on when dd is home from uni, the machine usually goes on twice a day but definitely once a day.
I change my towel twice a week but it just gets chucked in with a regular load and I do our bedding on a Sunday, the dc all have theirs done every fortnight.

I'm assuming you're being sarcastic.

But the sad thing is that 000s of clothes are bought and only worn once. Fast fashion is a truly awful thing, on very many levels.

You wash your bedlinen after 2 days? That seems really excessive to me

PickAChew · 12/10/2023 22:12

Smelly people on public transport aren't smelly just because they're wearing a shirt for a second day (unless they have untamed stinky armpits but that's a different issue)

I wash my clothes when they're dirty or smelly. For a t-shirt that might be after 2 hours or 2 days.

MellowYellow2023 · 12/10/2023 22:14

knickers and socks - every day
tops - every day pretty much
nightwear - every 2 - 3 days
dresses - wear twice before washing
suit jackets - once every two months - probably need to do this much more!!!
trousers - every two wears

Yes in the summer when it’s hot

Your clothes must get ruined really quickly.

Knickers/ socks - every wear
All other clothing - when it’s dirty or smells

Edited

This for us too.

glitterfinder · 12/10/2023 22:20

Socks tights and knickers- every wear.
Gym stuff- every second wear within reason.
Work shirts- every second wear.
Towels, pyjamas and sheets- about once a week, maybe 10 days depending.
Jeans and decent jumpers- try to air, only wash if properly dirty.
Nice dresses- almost never.
Bras- almost never (however I mostly wear yoga bras which fall under gym stuff).
