For me its after every wear (apart from jeans and joggers which is around 2-3 wears)

However this means i have a never ending flow of laundry

How many wears from freshly laundered would you go.

I do at least a load of laundry every day and wish I could cut down. I do have a baby, which means washing a lot of stuff, bit I also have a dc7 who likes clean pyjamas every might and often uses towels once. I try and stop that! I wash school shirts after one wear, jumpers too ( but they get used as goal posts etc, so are often muddy). I will do school trousers every 2/3 days.

There are also the swimming trunks, martial arts suit and football and rugby strips 😑

The adult stuff is less, underwear, socks, tops, gym stuff, one wear. Jeans and trousers, very little unless tiny hands have smeared them with stuff. Sweatshirts etc, when dirty. Jumpers, I hand-wash once a month, but some sit waiting for a few weeks!

I hate laundry!!!

zeibesaffron · 12/10/2023 22:49

Every wear, towels after every use and sheets/ bedding once a week. My DH is the only exception he wears jeans/ shorts for 2-3 wears. I do 1-2 loads a day (house of 4 adults with visiting boyfriends/ girlfriends)

VeridicalVagabond · 13/10/2023 01:06

Any fucking wonder the planet is on fire people doing 1-2 loads of washing a day and only wearing things once before washing again. Mental.

I think I've washed my cashmere jumper once in five years

Thank God you came along @AvengedQuince .
I was thinking, I have cashmere jumpers/cardies in my wardrobe that I've had for years and they have never been washed.

You wash your bedlinen after 2 days? That seems really excessive to me

It is really excessive, and totally unnecessary. As is having clean towels every day, and clothing other than socks/knickers. We get more hot weather where I live than the UK does and I don't wash things nearly as often - and no, I don't smell.

Catsmere · 13/10/2023 02:42

Pants, after one wear. Socks, if I haven't been sweaty (which I rarely am), after two. Tees, skivvies, shirts, after two (again, if I haven't been sweating). Jumpers as seldom as possible (too much washing isn't good for them). Jeans or track pants when they can stand up on their own! 😆

LucyLocketLostHerRocket · 13/10/2023 02:44

Every time they've been worn (apart from jeans).

I've mentioned this before but I will repeat.

Many years ago when I was doing my secretarial training, one of the other girls had an awful BO problem. The tutor decided to get the CEOs secretary in for the 'office hygiene' talk. I have used this system ever since.

At the end of the day, put your clothes in another room or cupboard as that re-acclimitazes your smelling function. Then later on, or the next day, go back to them and have a sniff. As you have been smelling other things in the meantime this means you can now pick up any nasty odours. You can then work out if your clothes need washing more often or not. It really works. Some people need to wash their clothes more often than others.

I wash knickers and gym stuff after every wear but as an example I have been wearing the same jumper since Monday. It has not been hot and this morning before I put it back on I had a sniff and even the underarms still smell of fabric conditioner.

There is so much waste and environmental damage caused by this obsession with washing everything after one wear.

The issue with the girl with the problem at the training centre was solved immediately without anyone being singled out or either side being put in an embarassing situation. Try it.

What a great tip, I must try that. I put my tops over the chair at night and check them next morning, but since they're in my bedroom I don't know if that will have the same result.

Same - they should be aired. Too much washing isn't good for knitwear, and pure wool hand knits have to be hand washed and laid flat out of direct sunlight to dry, which is a pain in the arse when you don't have much space.

PeloMom · 13/10/2023 03:31

Underwear daily; everything else when it gets dirty (which w a little kid could be every few hours🤣) but typically everything except jeans and big sweaters/ dry clean items daily.

Oblomov23 · 13/10/2023 03:51

I find most of mn neurotic about washing. After Every wear? For a jumper or a cardigan? Hmm

beguilingeyes · 13/10/2023 04:13

Moonbowlspoon · 12/10/2023 21:18

I just throw everything out after first wear and buy new.

I remember reading a thing that Frank Sinatra never wore a pair of socks twice. It's stayed with me.

MMAMPWGHAP · 12/10/2023 11:09

As little as possible.

Was taught years ago to air clothes. But my revolution this year has been Pitrok deodorant. Game changer. Lot of the smell on tops is the smelly deodorant. Don’t get that with Pitrok.

I use pitrok too. If I’ve ever used an anti perspirant, I smell- I don’t with pitrok.

Another game changer is merino clothing. Hand it up to air after each wear and its antibacterial qualities mean no niffs!

user1492757084 · 13/10/2023 04:35

I have OCD on damaging the planet and resources and thus only wash when the garment requires it due to smell and stains. Over washing waists the fabric, water and power.

undies = every day
socks = every long day (sometimes two half days)
jeans = when dirty or non crisp/approx every 3/4 wears
shirts and bras = when smelly or dirty/approx every 2 wears
jumpers non woollen = when dirty/approx every 3/4 wears
woollens = when dirty or smelly/approx every 10 wears
coats, suits and blazers = dry cleaned when needed/10 wears.
sun hats = when dirty/four times per year
bathers, sports gear = rinse & air each wear, wash every 3 wears.

I wear a lot of merino in winter, and I agree, it can be worn for ages without being washed.

Damonalbarnsbigtoe · 13/10/2023 05:57

After every wear apart from jeans which I try to wash every few wears!

See this looks very normal and reasonable to me. I wash many of these things less often and I don't have an OCD diagnosis. I'm sure your disorder affects you in other ways too though.

AlwaysPrettyOnTheInside · 13/10/2023 07:37

I dont understand the need to wash everything after every wear either. Part of the point of undergarments is to prevent direct contact with certain areas.

With the environment the way it is, people need to stop this ridiculousness.

Airing things inside out in the sun sanitises them, as I assume hanging them in the bathroom will do in the winter. Instant steam clean.

Washing sheets every other day is beyond ridiculous too. Try hanging them on the line in the sun instead.

Kerri44 · 13/10/2023 07:47

Everything except jeans is 1 wear, kids is everything 1 wear.....but my kids are 6 & 18mths, 18mth old covers us all in food n snot n drool

AlwaysPrettyOnTheInside · 13/10/2023 07:56

Kids don't sweat like some adults do so their clothes won't be dirty from sweat. If they just have a small bits of dinner dropped down the front, would you not try to spot clean it with a sponge before washing after 1 wear?

Kazzybingbong · 13/10/2023 08:16

The people who are judging others for not washing their clothes after every wear are obviously the smelly ones. They must stink if they have to do that.

I rarely sweat and my clothes do not smell. I wash them because I’ve usually spilled something on them and because I love the smell of freshly washed clothes. I don’t wash them everyday because I’d never stop!

ToadOnTheHill · 13/10/2023 08:30

Smalls and tops, daily.
Bottoms- if I'm in the house, 2/3 days, if 9 pop out, 2 days, if I go somewhere where there are lots of people, like public transport, cities, benches then daily

ReviewingTheSituation · 13/10/2023 08:36

How does being on public transport or sitting on a bench make your clothes dirtier? Obviously if you sit in/on something then it will mark, but that is very unlikely.

I travel on public transport all the time and it doesn't make your clothes any dirtier than travelling any other way.

Same with 'anywhere there are other people'. How does that affect the clothes you're wearing??

Robinni · 13/10/2023 08:53

Pants, socks, gym gear after 1 wear.

All else 2-3 wears or when dirty.

PJs 3-4 wears or when dirty.

Coats about every 6m or season refresh.

Wouldyouguess · 13/10/2023 08:53

After every wear except for trousers/skirts unless they are dirty.
I am quite active in my job and move around a lot, I would nto wear tops/blouses/dresses again without washing as there is a very mild smell of sweat at the end of the day (on the clothes, not detectable when not sniffiong, but Id not wear them again).
