For me its after every wear (apart from jeans and joggers which is around 2-3 wears)

However this means i have a never ending flow of laundry

How many wears from freshly laundered would you go.

@AvengedQuince - well the tube is filthy. The seats are dirty and it’s like a black fume dirt hence why people say they sneeze black snot.
Otherwise at home/ pottering in garden or own car I would wear jumper for ages

AvengedQuince · 14/10/2023 16:08

I'm wearing a jumper I think I've worn at least a dozen times and it has nothing but the odd cat hair in the way of 'dirt' and doesn't smell at all. I never wear jumpers as tops, I know some people do, or with a sleeveless top, so it's only touching my arms.

AvengedQuince · 14/10/2023 16:11

@Caspianberg
Oh, okay. I thought the black snot was just from London in general. I live in the country and that's happened to me when I've had to go to London.

Livemenot · 14/10/2023 18:00

When visibly dirty or smelly, really depends :)

Crazycrazylady · 14/10/2023 18:10

Obviously socks and undies after one wear. Tops/t shirts and leggings ( anything close to my skin) after one wear but jumpers jeans etc as required.

I just don't understand it and no poster has really explained just why they feel everything has to be washed so often.

It's the inverse of the Python Yorkshiremen sketch, the more you wash the better a person you are and your family is superior to the scuzzy people who actually wear a t-shirt twice.
When I was teaching I had three washable suits, the one I liked least I wore for one day, Friday. On Wednesday I put my toe through the hem of my trousers so wore the one I only wore on Friday usually. I couldn't believe the comments I got all day, often from pupils I didn't know from Adam, Miss why are you in your Friday suit? Amazing what pupils notice.

Changing the subject slightly. When I worked in an office it always amazed me how men could get away with wearing the same suit every day... forever, and women were expected to wear different clothes every day.

SacAMain · 14/10/2023 12:10

I don't get people who wash outerwear like jumpers all the time. I'll wash them once a season and only then if necessary.

I feel comforted that what is seen as my "excessive" laundry is balanced by the under-washing of others.

Why is it underwashing to not wash regularly the clothes that don't even touch your skin?

Gwenhwyfar · 15/10/2023 11:22

"women were expected to wear different clothes every day."

I've heard this so many times, but nobody's ever said anything to me when I wear the same clothes. Unless it's the middle of summer I wear a top under my work dress so I can wear the dress many times. I might rotate a bit so that I have a change, but nobody's assumed I'm a dirty stop out when wearing the same dress two days' running.

As for men's suits, presumably they change their shirts more often and I'm amazed you can tell the difference between one navy suit and the other. I'd never know how many suits a male colleague has.

Gwenhwyfar · 15/10/2023 11:25

"no poster has really explained just why they feel everything has to be washed so often."

I had a colleague who did that for her whole family's clothes and PJs. When asked why she said she knew it wasn't necessary, but it was what her mother did so she has continued. Some people would rather follow family traditions than have spare time I suppose.

Supportyourlocal · 15/10/2023 11:32

Thongs, bras, boxers, bikinis, swim shorts and other underwear/swimwear is washed after every wear for hygiene purposes.

all other clothing is washed very minimally to prevent damaging it (especially graphic t-shirts/hoodies) and if any clothing is sainted I will try to remove the stain by hand and only wash the item If the stain or a created water mark doesn’t go away which is very rare.

Maybe it depends where you work, but in banking women were definitely held to higher standards than the men.

Everything is one wear pretty much , except ;

jeans - I’ll have a few wears from a pair of jeans if they still seem fresh ( not the children though , they’re one wear )

jumpers / hoodies - my son will always just have it in his college bag but barely wear it so I’ll not wash them every day , I can tell if not worn . Mine - I wouldn’t wear a sweatshirt again , except for a day in cleaning etc .. then I will . But I have a few hoodies that I wear around the house , or will throw on to pop out , as they aren’t worn all the time and not for going out then I’ll let them have a few wears .

underwear, obviously one wear . Thinner trousers ( leggings , work trousers etc ) one wear and I would never , ever let a top be worn more than once before washing - we sweat 🤮

However - and I am sure this will be echoed - let’s not talk about bras 🤣

GlitteryUnicornSparkles · 15/10/2023 19:50

I wear a uniform for work and work largely outdoors. Unless I get particularly dirty or something gross on me I generally tend to wear the same pants anywhere from 3-5 days depending on my rota and where my days off fall. I change my t-shirt every 2 days / uses so use 2-3 a week. Same hoody all week unless it gets something yucky on it or no hoody if its warm. When I get home I shower and put on pjs which I’ll wear around 3 nights in a row. Knickers washed after every wear, sometimes I’ll go through 2 pairs a day if I go to the gym as I shower and put on fresh after a workout. Bra worn for the gym washed after every session but other bra’s I’ll wear 3 or 4 times unless I’ve been particularly sweaty. Outside of work I’ll wear joggers or jeans around 3 times before washing unless I get something on them, leggings once or twice. If I’ve only been mooching about at home doing nothing exerting I’ll wear a t-shirt twice if I haven’t spilt anything on it.

My smelly dirty teenage son generally one wear for everything except pants if hes only been sat around at home.

Dancingqueen2023 · 15/10/2023 20:08

Underwear and socks will be changed daily, along with t shirts and school shirts. All trousers, jumpers and hoodies will be hung to air and washed as needed.
Sadly we're a very active house with dance and sports so sportswear can be worn daily for either formal practice or home practice and tends to get rather sweaty 😭😭

Baba197 · 15/10/2023 22:42

Underwear, tops and leggings every wear, jeans every 2 wears if can get away with it, hoodies, pjs and relaxing at home clothes as needed usually every 3/4 wears. Think it depends how sweaty you are, I’m naturally quite sweaty so wouldn’t feel right wearing tops more than once

I'm exactly the same
Also I wash towels after ever other use. I'm never on top of it

ChocolateIsntTheSameAnymore · 15/10/2023 23:23

Daily everything occasionally jeans are 2 wears.
I swear the dcs are always spilling something on me, etc

They too NEVER come home from school clean enough to wear trousers or a cardigan twice.

But i dont mind I LOVE washing, pegging it out etc.

Gwenhwyfar · 16/10/2023 19:33

"Maybe it depends where you work, but in banking women were definitely held to higher standards than the men."

So what exactly did people say to you/other women if you wore the same clothes? And how can you tell if men wear the same suit? I coud never tell the difference.

Of course people take more interest in women's clothes because they're more varied than men's workwear.

Vistada · 12/10/2023 10:53

Just to be clear I'm not asking this to judge! I'm genuinely curious if I'm overdoing it because tbqh im fucking sick of the amount of laundry

Yes, you are definitely overdoing it! Wash clothing when it’s dirty or smells! Wool rarely needs washing, just airing (the fibre is self cleaning). If you do this your clothes will last longer, you will spend less on electricity, laundry products etc and you won’t be contributing to damaging the environment as much!

AnnieSnap · 16/10/2023 22:49

Crazycrazylady · 14/10/2023 18:10

Obviously socks and undies after one wear. Tops/t shirts and leggings ( anything close to my skin) after one wear but jumpers jeans etc as required.

Why obviously? My feet don’t appear to sweat and certainly don’t smell. I wash socks when they look like they need it. This varies according to what I’m doing and what fibre they are made from.

DelphiniumBlue · 16/10/2023 23:02

Socks and pants get washed after each wear. Everything else gets washed when it's dirty ( ie got a spill on it). I could get 5 or 6 wears out of leggings/jeans and more out of a dress, but could be much less. I wear an apron in the kitchen to protect my clothes, and will sponge small marks ( food spills/mud) where feasible. But I'm not a stinky person these days; DH and DSs have clean tshirt/shirt every day because they are smellier!

theduchessofspork · 16/10/2023 23:07

Socks, knickers, tights, bras, sports wear - after one wear

Tops and shirts in summer - after one wear

Out of summer and try and get 2 wears out of tops, but often they are so creased it’s easier to wash and hang them than iron. Trousers 3 or 4 wears. Skirts and jumpers as needed - probably every 6 to 10 wears.

This is assuming I haven’t split coffee down myself and had to change within two hours..

Once you’ve lived there a few months the black snot disappears.. it’s a mystery

Caspianberg · 17/10/2023 08:16

@theduchessofspork - does it? We lived there 12 years and the tube dirt never improved. Dh would use daily for commute and used to come straight home and wash hands and used to see black grime!
I luckily walked to work and only used the tube very occasionally

Fizbosshoes · 17/10/2023 08:50

Our washing machine has broken, I'm going to be quite choosy about what actually needs washing this week!
