To think Starmer seriously needs a better haircut

The current hair is just awful, a weird 50s throwback style. Why isn't the Labour party hiring people to style him to look (and sound) professional for leadership? It's not enough these days just to be yourself and jog along. It's serious.

@Moonbowlspoon - I don't know, could be dangerous. Remember when Gordon Brown got smiling lessons. That was not good

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 12/10/2023 22:19

Yes, because it could make him more appealing to voters. There are a millions of people who don't bother to vote.

And they're going to be swayed by a haircut? I seriously doubt it. Even if they were the kinds of idiots to be swayed by a haircut, there's no guarantee they'd like the new haircut better than the old one!

Did you see Johnson?

Have you looked at Fabricant?

No one seems to think their politics are affected by their hair.

Why pick on Starmer?

I'm not picking on Starmer. I support the Labour party and want them to win the next election. I therefore want Starmer to be a more appealing leader than he currently is according to polls. https://yougov.co.uk/topics/politics/trackers/keir-starmer-approval-rating

How well is Keir Starmer doing as Labour leader?

Do you think Keir Starmer is doing well or badly as leader of the Labour party?

Fabricant! What a tremendous syrup that is.

Gwendimarco · 12/10/2023 22:29

Don’t be ridiculous.

I revile the Tories and everything they stand for but for some reason I find it difficult to dislike Michael Gove. I have no idea why, it defies all logic.

Perhaps because he was adopted as a baby and grabbed his chances worked hard and went to Oxford. His solo nightclub appearance in Aberdeen was also good.

I still can’t work out of this thread is meant to be serious or not, it seems very air-headed.

I quite like Starmer and think he’s doing okay.

I’m not sure how useful his YouGov approval rating is, particularly without comparison to other party leaders, past and present. His approval ratings appear to be significantly better than Sunak’s at least, which is the most important thing.

As to why Starmer’s approval ratings are low, I’d assume that’s largely a reflection of the influence of our Tory-friendly media, a portion of Labour voters perceiving him as being insufficiently left wing, where we are in the election cycle (I don’t think it’s easy for any opposition leader to gain much traction before a general election campaign) and probably a few policy items - like the trans issue. I do think he is also a bit lacking in charisma, although that doesn’t concern me personally.

I also suspect that appearing as the least-worst option to the widest section of voters is part of his electoral strategy. It’s all well inspiring lots of very enthusiastic supporters (like Corbyn did) but that doesn’t necessarily translate to electoral success.

Would it be nice if Starmer had a little bit more charisma? Yeah, probably. Should he have a ‘makeover’? No - in fact I think he’d be widely ridiculed if he even tried it, like when William Hague tried out a baseball cap and I dare say would lose him support.

You went too far this time 🤮

I was aiming for the daftest post on the daftest thread of the day, but I think perhaps I have been beaten.

Its a bit late for that.

bombastix · 12/10/2023 22:56

There are actually a number of insta and X accounts dedicated to Starmer's hair which are quite entertaining.

I hadn't realised he was over 60 so the hair is pretty good as is the waistline.

MrsSkylerWhite · 12/10/2023 22:56

Fightyouforthatpie

I think she is great in a lot of ways

I would have disagreed with you a few years ago but I think she’s undergone a huge transformation in the past couple of years. Maybe she’s become more of a pragmatist, which is essential if you’re to be a successful politician. Whatever it is, as a former detractor, I was impressed by her speech at the conference and think she could fulfil many ministerial roles in a far more professional and competent way than any of the bloody shower we have now.

I hope Yvette Cooper is given the senior role that she deserves, too. In fact, pretty much all of the senior Labour women are impressive.

Awful hair didn’t hold Boris back professionally or romantically!

Quite.

mrscatwoman · 13/10/2023 06:00

I want the OP to say (preferably show somehow - a diagram?) what style they want Starmer to adopt. Because I'm pretty sure anything remotely radical or even noticeable would quickly be pounced on by the media. So far they've got nothing on him other than he bought a donkey sanctuary for his dying mum. We don't need the Mail 'revealing' that he's spent £££ on a makeover.

He's doing just fine.

Janiie · 13/10/2023 06:50

'He's doing just fine.'

Yes he is polling just fine so why does he look so terrified, why the constant desperate rictus grin, why the rabbit in the headlight look? I just cannot believe he ever did anything useful in a court room he looks like he'd be too busy sobbing in the staff room.

He needs to look a bit tougher and professional and tone down the Oasis hair do.

On the subject of court rooms, are you @Janiie content that the government has so mismanaged the criminal justice system that judges have now be directed not to send people to prison because there are no prison spaces for them to go to?

Of course Sunak doesn't even know when he himself is breaking the law, so perhaps he is happy for anyone to break the law?

MrTiddlesTheCat · 13/10/2023 07:48

I hear it's currently on trend to have a 70s perm and a mullet. That'd win him a few extra votes.

pointythings · 13/10/2023 08:29

RogueFemale · 12/10/2023 22:35

Perhaps because he was adopted as a baby and grabbed his chances worked hard and went to Oxford. His solo nightclub appearance in Aberdeen was also good.

By that logic people should also like Angela Rayner, but the prejudice against her is appalling.

A change of hair won't make habitual non voters vote Labour, and it won't sway people who do vote.

pointythings · 13/10/2023 08:31

I don't think he looks terrified at all. Unlike Sunak when faced with Victoria Derbyshire.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 13/10/2023 09:01

I couldn’t care less about his hair. And I’m a bit biased against anyone in the public eye - who is very evidently not a trendy type - who makes painful efforts to try to look trendy.

I well remember some vacuous female journalist (or two) saying why on earth didn’t Tim Henman update his image to look more ‘edgy’ - grow one of those scruffy little beards or something.
He just wasn’t the type.
People have said the same lately about King Charles. FGS he’d just look ridiculously try-hard if he started trying to look fashionable.

KnittedCardi · 12/10/2023 15:15

Slightly off topic, but not really - Do you know we haven't had a bald PM since Winston Churchill. The last one in the US, was Eisenhower. Hair matters.

Alec Douglas Home's hair was receding a lot, but he wasn't bald all over.

Didn't stop my DF from referring to him as "that bald bastard" though.

bombastix · 13/10/2023 09:09

Well Johnson is going bald! Quite noticeable when you get close.

StopVotingToryYouTwats · 13/10/2023 09:20

He looks good for 60 I think.
