To people not dress their babies in Babygrows anymore?

I have a 6 month old, and from day one he's mostly been wearing babygrows. I've noticed when out and about, and at baby groups etc it's very rare to see this on others. All other babies seem to be dressed in outfits of some kind.

I had a nurse mention to me a little while ago how cute my baby looked in a babygrow. I thought it was a weird comment at the time as assumed this was how all babies dressed. I've had other comments about it too.

Is there a reason people don't use Babygrows? They just seem like the easiest choice for me, less faff. Plus they're cute and seem the most comfortable thing to them to wear.

Oh I love a baby in a babygro, especially when they are still so little and squishy! Mine lived in them for the first few months then we very gradually transitioned to soft clothing as they got sturdier and sat up etc

Topi226 · 11/10/2023 21:44

Yes! I used them up until my baby started standing and then switched to leggings. Before i had lots of comments saying "oh is he having a pjama day".

PinkDaffodil2 · 11/10/2023 21:44

It’s not just you! My 7 month old is huge and is just going in to 12-18 month clothes. He is growing out of sizes so fast I basically couldn’t be bothered getting 9-12 outfits just for him to outgrow them, and all the gifted clothes are smaller.
Most of the time he is in sleep suits for night time, and the bonds wondersuits during the day. He’s not mobile yet, I’ll get him into tops and leggings or jobbers as he gets a bit bigger, but it’s actually been quite nice having a month or two not thinking about what matches (and if it’s still clean at bedtime he can sleep in it!).
Someone mentioned it being a class thing - I’m a doctor and my friends also seem pretty laid back.

Sellingbedtime · 11/10/2023 21:45

Personally I hated putting my babies in anything other then baby grows while they were still immobile. Nothing worse then dresses/skirts that ride up to their necks, or faffing with dungaree type outfits. Plus every time you put them in something nice the inevitable poo explosion happens 😑

Floralnomad · 11/10/2023 21:50

I had my babies in the 1990s but they wore clothes during the day - soft type clothing and no shoes , mainly leggings/ jogging bottoms and a top .

SherbetLemonn · 11/10/2023 21:50

I never really understood people saying how much easier babygrows were.. I strongly disagreed! My boy was a very sicky baby, until he was 10 months or so, and I found little leggings and tops/dungarees outfits much easier to change him in and out of a million times a day without having to get all those wriggly little limbs in and out every time, plus if the sick just got his top, you’d only have to change one part. He wore vests underneath too of course. Plus, past three or four months or so, I felt like babygrows were just too pyjama-like, adorable tho they are.

ToussaintTheChef · 11/10/2023 21:50

First baby = outfits

second = babygro

Xmasbabyxmas · 11/10/2023 21:57

I faffed about with outfits for my first baby. Second child lived exclusively in babygrows until 8 months when they became tricky for her to crawl in then we switched to leggings in the daytime and babygrows at night.

shivawn · 11/10/2023 21:57

People do still use babygros but by 4-6 months a lot of people are probably transitioning out of them as everyday wear, that's why you don't see them much on babies around the same age. My son still wore them for daytime occasionally up to 9 months old but we were mostly doing little leggings and tshirts after 6 months. It doesn't matter what they wear once it's temperature appropriate, just personal preference.

Oioicaptain · 11/10/2023 21:58

Love a baby grow. Mine would have still been in them at 4 years old if they could have fit.

Zanatdy · 11/10/2023 21:58

Mike only ever wore babygrows at home, to sleep in, lazy days, or when newborn. Otherwise I dressed them in clothes.

Pressthespacebar · 11/10/2023 21:59

I love baby grows but with my first baby i was really excited and bought so many little outfits, but with the rest I put them in nothing but baby grows with a cardigan until they were crawling!

Sidetalk · 11/10/2023 21:59

I love baby grows, but they’re not safe for use with slings and the baby won’t go in the pram.

Not safe? Why not?

strikeit · 11/10/2023 22:01

I love babygros. Mine wore them pretty much exclusively for bed until he was at least 18 months. Found them much easier for buying in multipacks and for washing. But also just thought they were cute. Winnie the Pooh, Snoopy, baby blue...

Can't really remember how long he wore them during the day, but definitely for the first few months.

He's 18 now. I miss those days!

YetMoreNewBeginnings · 11/10/2023 22:01

I think it depends on the shape of the baby. I used babygrows all the time with my first 2, but then with my third trying to find babygrows that fitted was impossible. If they fitted lengthwise they drowned him in the body and sleeves. he was much better suited to trousers or leggings and tops, he still wears two different sizes now.

Lion1618 · 11/10/2023 22:02

I think I used babygrows exclusively for the first few months and then also put them in leggings and bodysuit combos in the daytime. I know what you mean though, I love a babygrow and they're only in them for such a short amount of time.I found the footed babygrows became really impractical once they're moving around unfortunately.

Ilikeyourdecor · 11/10/2023 22:04

Babygrows often were too short in the legs or dc outgrew the feet before everything else. Preferred footless things. Also liked dresses as no faffing with poppers for nappy changes.

I liked the distinction between day and night wear too.

Lion1618 · 11/10/2023 22:05

@AliceTheCamelHasFiveHumps They're unsafe because of the fabric being pulled up around their bum and legs while they're in the sling, meaning their toes and feet are getting all squished up and pulled by the seams on the bottom of the babygrow feet. It's better to use leggings or rompers with socks when baby is in the sling.

Blackandwhitemakesgrey · 11/10/2023 22:06

Of course it's a class thing. On Mn at least.

Ummm...I don't think so. I imagine most babies wear babygros up to three months or so and then switch to wearing some of the thirty/forty plus gifted clothes (which was the case with DC1). I think people don't seem to realise that the babies outfits don't only consist of denim and trainers or frilly dresses (which as well as looking like they appear on Teen Moms are obviously uncomfortable for babies who are lying on their backs most of the day. If they did Mamas and Papas would have long gone out of business.

This is the sort of thing most people I know dress their babies in.

Babygros are called sleepsuits now and there are daytime suits called rompers but they are more expensive and I guess more time has to be put into dressing the baby. Personally I think seeing a big baby in a babygro looks a bit lazy as if the child was taken out and about and then put back into their clean cot to sleep wearing clothes they've worn outside but maybe I think that because when I cba dressing DC2, I was not in a good place emotionally.

Before having my baby I stocked up on little outfits. But when she was born they just seemed uncomfortable. Riding up at the back etc. So I decided to stick to babygrows. Far less to think about too in terms of pairing.

When she reached 5 or 6 months it started looking like she was wearing pjs all day so that’s when I started with proper outfits. That coincided with summer and little rompers which didn’t feel much different to be honest but looked like daytime clothes at least. And now she’s crawling its leggings every day!

Comfort and practicality are priority here!

EarlGreywithLemon · 11/10/2023 22:06

Baby grows only for both my babies until they were way past six months. Probably more like 9 months! Also, rompers in the summer. I remember I bought a plain, soft dress for my daughter when she was six months and I thought she looked so wrong in it, I put her straight back in a romper.
They didn’t wear baby grows at night though, they were in vests and sleeping bags.

mysocksarehaunted · 11/10/2023 22:08

When my oldest was small about a decade ago I noticed quite a class/age difference in baby wear choices. Generally the middle class and/or 30's plus mums were more likely to dress their babies in gender neutral, plain-coloured, 'lounge wear'.

anonimoxyz · 11/10/2023 22:08

I dressed both my girls in gros until 6 months but they both had a (needs must) special occasion dress for weddings that fell in that time. Personally I love babies in babygros xx

Dragonfly909 · 11/10/2023 22:09

My first baby wore babygrows a lot, for my second I am using babygrows at night and clothes in the day e.g. trousers and a top. I feel like I want to differentiate between night and day a bit more this time. And also I'm used to taking off trousers for a nappy change with my toddler so it seems easier than loads of poppers I guess!
