To be annoyed at Aldi middle aisle

I used to love aldis middle aisles full of junk. Went in for toilet roll and came out with ski boots, hockey stick and a violin.

All joking aside I've got some really good deals in the past especially for the children near Christmas.

The last few months have just been a disappointment, one aisle of the good stuff and the rest is just branded food that doesn't appear to be any cheaper then other supermarkets. If I wanted branded food I would go to Tesco.

is it just my local Aldi that this has happened to or are they all like this now??

Ours is the same.

eosmum · 09/10/2023 18:45

Yep ours the same, some weeks these’s no aisle of wonder at all.

GasPanic · 09/10/2023 18:45

What annoys me about the middle aisle is when it is used to stock unnecessary tat while fundamental foods are ignored "because of space".

For example, there is no frozen beef mince in my local Aldi. Which to me is a staple of many home cooked meals. You can get the non frozen, but it always harder to handle when frozen that the purpose frozen stuff.

Now I might be willing to forgive that because if it is a smaller store and cheaper, but when the middle isle is taken up with tat clearly the first excuse isn't a valid argument.

FuzzyPuffling · 09/10/2023 18:46

Lidl is full of electric tools and school uniform. Boring.

VisaWoes · 09/10/2023 18:46

Same, I literally never go in it, just stock more food fgs!

Itsrainingshessnoring · 09/10/2023 18:48

It's really disappointing. I used to love a wonder, now I just do an online delivery with the local supermarket.

I wonder why they have changed it, the only thing I can think of is people go to aldi for main shop, then another supermarket for brands Aldi have caught into this and they want the consumers to do all their shopping there 🤷‍♀️

Any aldi workers on here??

Certainly that is true for me - if Aldi stocked a few more things I would never need to go anywhere else, but because it doesn't stock those things I am forced elsewhere. The question is what things can it stock that it doesn't that will make the most impact.

I continue my campaign for frozen beef mince...

Maybe if they got rid of the 20 million variants of frozen potatoe products they could stock the Mince.

Our Aldi is still having plenty of random stuff in new every week. I got some really lovely scented candles and really nice ceramic Halloween tea light holders there last week. And a car boot protector. There were some nice looking cast iron casserole dishes too. I would agree that the food specialbuys bit isn’t as weird and wonderful as it used to be though.

This week has lots of Disney stuff due to come in on Thursday, then more on Sunday according to their website. They usually have what is mentioned on their specialbuys website section in ours each time I’ve been.

Didiplanthis · 09/10/2023 18:57

I think the middle isle stuff has got really expensive too... not even the thrill of a bargain thing you never needed !

BertieBotts · 09/10/2023 18:59

Their business model is to buy stuff in bulk, I wonder if that works less well since Brexit? We seem to have the normal range here in Germany.

I will support your selection for CEO of Aldi.

BlueThursday · 09/10/2023 19:01

The middle aisle for ours now is branded stuff that defeats the point of cheaper shopping

Itsrainingshessnoring · 09/10/2023 19:06

Even the website is letting me down these days.

I don’t even look at those aisles as they are so full of crap, food is expensive enough without adding meaningless shite to the shopping bill, never even just been for a wander either am v boring lol 😂

Top tip, if you buy fresh mince, decant it into a plastic food bag, flatten it and sort of put indents into it then freeze it, so when you want to use it it sort of breaks apart.

Graciebobcat · 09/10/2023 19:14

I was a huge Aldi fan and used to do click & collect every week. But their prices have gone up and now I don't spent much more in Sainsbury's, plus I can get everything in Sainsbury's, and they do delivery.

This is blasphemy! How could you even type such a sacrilegious suggestion?

All hail the Frozen Potato Product Pantheon!

Ta, will try that next time. At the moment I go to Tescos.

GasPanic · 09/10/2023 19:18

OK here is my plan.

They have limited number of product lines because of space. So ...

Every receipt over £30 has a number.

On the website you are allowed to enter the three products you want that are not there. The number on the receipt validates the entry.

Then every month they do a prize for all entries of £500, £250 and £100 vouchers.

That should enable them to figure out what products people want that aren't there.

Name99 · 09/10/2023 19:22

There has been no candles on the website for months!

Thestreets · 09/10/2023 19:28

Aldi has a website?! Why on earth didn't I know this!

Frozen mash? Ours doesn't stock it amongst the other potato porn, I do wonder what Aldi have against Frozen mash.

*and give over those that suggest I should peel.

Some of us like electrical tools 😍

HamstersAreMyLife · 09/10/2023 19:33

I think either brexit or the war in Ukraine affected special buys in the middle aisle as ours used to have signs up explaining why they weren't getting in what was expected in the middle aisles. Ours seems to be getting slightly more in recently but not a patch on what it used to be. There will be a handful in of something good and then other tat which is there for months meaning no space for new stock. Our middle aisle food is kept in a different place, I don't really look there.
