Headlice infestation & wedding day

Foxyfoxyfox · 05/10/2023 12:44

My wedding is a week away. I’m having my hair professionally styled on the day. Just found lots of headlice in my DD’s hair. Checked mine and I have lots too. Neither of us have been itchy. I have lots of thick long hair. Even if I can get all the lice I’m never going to get all the eggs out before my wedding. AIBU to cancel the stylist? I don’t think I can live with the shame of her finding any

DP says I shouldn’t cancel. Should just attack my hair with a comb every night and hope for the best!

That's unfortunate timing! Apple cider vinegar will dissolve the glue that sticks the eggs to the hair. That should get rid of them.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 05/10/2023 12:46

Garlic oil kills lice.

And a Nitty-Gritty comb gets the eggs out.

Gifgirl · 05/10/2023 12:47

Shit-load of conditioner, leave on for an hour, then comb thoroughly with nit comb before washing hair.

Good luck!

Testina · 05/10/2023 12:48

It’s not shameful.
Hair stylists have seen nits before.
Get combing, and if you want, email the stylist and warn them. They’ll be sympathetic and they certainly won’t want to lose the work short notice - although is payment non returnable?

cocksstrideintheevening · 05/10/2023 12:49

You will be able to get rid. Go and buy big bottles of cheap conditioner and a nitty gritty. Smother hair in conditioner, leave on for a while and section of hair combing through religiously every section.

In your case I'd do it a couple of times a day.

You really do need to try and get rid or you'll pass them around the wedding guests with all the hugging and kissing that goes on at weddings!

Good luck - I hate the fuckers.

Motomum23 · 05/10/2023 12:49

Oh dear! Don't cancel the stylist. Chances are she has seen it all before - nit comb every night, treat it twice and prewarn her that your dds school had an outbreak that's been treated so she knows if she does find anything she can just ignore it subtly as opposed to professionally having to tell you she found a bit.

Oysterbabe · 05/10/2023 12:50

A week is enough time to get rid of them.

puppygalore · 05/10/2023 12:51

Hedrin kills the eggs as well as the live nits apparently, get a load of that on now!

Readeatcake · 05/10/2023 12:51

You can have them all out in a week, I would go straight in with a professional treatment shampoo/spray to kill them all.

Yes natural treatments are better but you want something 100% effective right away.

Then do the wet combing with conditioner every night up until the wedding. If possible do it twice a night.

Iamnotavicar · 05/10/2023 12:53

Hair straighteners are the best thing ever, as they will obliterate the insects and their eggs, and seemed to be the only thing that really got rid of them for my daughter's thick hair.

Zola1 · 05/10/2023 12:53

Hedrin, the overnight one, and then combing every day...and maybe another hedrin treatment if you can fit it in before the wedding

Definitely this. Only thing that worked for my kids. Comb through the hair in the shower with conditioner. Do it for a couple of days running and it will be fine.

zilchnadazero · 05/10/2023 12:59

Please tell the hair stylist so she can decide whether she can continue or not.

If she does she may want to wrap her own hair up and disinfect all told before her next clients. She may also e want to treat herself as a precaution as she won't want to risk passing on to clients.

It doesn't kill either.

EnoughIsay · 05/10/2023 13:02

I have three long haired dds.

A mumsnet tip from years ago saved the day - IT WORKS>

Flat iron your hair every day and comb.

The heat kills the eggs. I promsie. You will be fine by the day. Good luck!

TiredMamOfTwo · 05/10/2023 13:05

Head lice killer, comb through.

Then wash out and put Conditioner in leave it in for a hour and comb through.

Wash out & then straighten your hair a inch of its life it'll kill any remaining eggs/bits and comb through.

Repeat process for a few days and should be fine. Keep your hair up inbetween & boil wash your bedding.

Nsws2015 · 05/10/2023 13:06

I'm with the hair straighteners too, my dd used to have long thick hair and I never caught nits when she had them as I straightened my hair daily!

Smartiepants79 · 05/10/2023 13:07

Hairdressers will not touch you if you have head lice. I think you need to contact your stylist and see if there is a way round it. Maybe providing all your own tools and towels etc. I would not risk her turning up and then having to refuse to do it. That’s really unfair. She may be fine, she hopefully will have some suggestions to make it work. You need a back up plan in case though.

Chocolatepopcorn · 05/10/2023 13:09

Just use derbac. It's expensive - 33 euros here - but it gets the job done. Leave it on overnight.

Chocolatepopcorn · 05/10/2023 13:10

It's called Derbac M

averythinline · 05/10/2023 13:12

hedrin overnight...only thing that worked completely for me plus tea tree in hair rinse plus conditioner and combing...

averythinline · 05/10/2023 13:13

sorry meant derbac....

DragonFly98 · 05/10/2023 13:01

It doesn't kill either.

I had to use Hedrin Once last week for myself and my kids, it definitely does kill them!

Holshicup · 05/10/2023 13:16

We tried everything under the sun, hedrin, regular combing, niity gritty comb, straightners the lot. Little buggers kept coming back time after time. Vamoose worked instantly first time, it kills them before removal. Don't cancel op!
