Headlice infestation & wedding day

Foxyfoxyfox · 05/10/2023 12:44

My wedding is a week away. I’m having my hair professionally styled on the day. Just found lots of headlice in my DD’s hair. Checked mine and I have lots too. Neither of us have been itchy. I have lots of thick long hair. Even if I can get all the lice I’m never going to get all the eggs out before my wedding. AIBU to cancel the stylist? I don’t think I can live with the shame of her finding any

She probably won’t do your hair if you’ve got loads of eggs. On the other hand, I’m sure you can get rid of it all in a week as there’s some pretty strong solutions out there. Can DP help you comb out the eggs? DH and I had an unexpected infestation about 4 years ago (we suspect it was DSS who brought them with him!!) DH shaved his own head and also spent a couple of hours with a nit comb sorting out my hair. Conditioner made the job a lot easier. It was fine.

What band have you got for your wedding?
Red Hot Chili Peppers, featuring Flea?

My DD had them for ages years ago, all the usual treatments didn't work and I was combing them out every day. Eventually found the tip online of using washing up liquid. It suffocates the lice.

If you are at home, brush your hair over the bath straight away. Some of the biggest lice will fall out. I can't use any of the treatment shampoos (v sensitive skin) so I can't comment on those. Loads of conditioner, a normal comb, then a nit comb, then a nitty gritty comb every night. You will soon break the life cycle. But please tell your stylist. She will probably be fine with it but she will be able to take extra precautions.

lots of conditioner and a nitty gritty comb. Call in support from your favourite support human(s) have someone combing your hair whilst you comb your daughter's.

rinse comb in a pot of hot water, have plenty of towels around

Watch silly movies on tv and don't stress about it too much

Don’t cancel OP, we have got you! Do the tonne-of-conditioner-comb first, then the treatment. Then comb daily and have your DP / a willing child pull the rest out. Sit watching TV, they get a torch and a comb - every time they find one, slide it off the hair with tweezers and wipe onto tissue. You’ll be free enough by next week then not to worry. This is what the companies who do lice removal do (speaking of which, that’s also an option - one in SEL and Harrogate that I know of)

Hedrin once with a nittygritty comb. Do this everyday and you'll be fine.

Runnersandtoms · 05/10/2023 17:15

Some people are being way overdramatic about the stylist not wanting to touch you. Unless she's planning to rub her head on yours she can't catch them from you!

Nitty gritty comb every day will get them gone within a week, or at least get it so the only ones are the tiniest ones she won't see. Keep going every day until you see nothing on the comb.

zilchnadazero · 05/10/2023 17:25

Not necessary dramatic, more of a health and safety issue. Its actually a contra indication to do someones hair when they have head lice and it could render the hairdressers insurance invalid. The hair stylist will have covered this in their training and may not want to risk their entire livelihood.
Personally I wouldn't but I do know fellow hair stylists who have. Always better to be honest though I think.

ghostyslovesheets · 05/10/2023 17:36

Hedrin - only thing that ever worked when mine where little - top tip, when removing do not wet the hair - just massage a shed load of cheep shampoo in first - then rinse - it's stops it being greasy.

ToadOnTheHill · 05/10/2023 17:47

You can get rid of them within a week, easily.

Who ever is saying just go, they've seen it all before, I'm sorry but that's fucking disgusting. Nobody wants to style hair with a live louse infection.

Hair stylists haven't signed up for that and you should be ashamed if you think it's ok to go with an active infection.
