This gave me a little bubble of joy this morning and I want to share it. Here are all the details.

Voting on the fattest bear starts today at this link. I can't wait for the children to get home so we can vote.

I've attached a picture of '747'. Bless his little grumpy face on his BIG bear body.

@WhiskersPete brown bears do not eat people. as far as I know from my in depth Google research, polar bears are the only land mammals who actively hunt and eat humans. I dont blame them.

a lot of people have pet black or brown bears

What about grizzly bears? Are they a different thing to brown or black? I have very poor bear knowledge, it only extends to Polar, Grizzly, Spectacled, Panda, Pooh and now Fat.

Brown bears are called grizzlies in the US. This has lots of info, including a chart of all the bears en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brown_bear

loislovesstewie · 06/10/2023 12:45

Actually a couple and their dog were killed by a grizzly in Banff National Park recently. They were camping apparently and the bear was an aged one at the end of her life. I admit I was somewhat surprised that camping was allowed there.

littleripper · 06/10/2023 14:44

Grizzlys certainly do eat people! Not often and generally they only attack in defence but they do! DO NOT WATCH GRIZZLY MAN THAT FILM DESTROYED ME

WhiskersPete · 06/10/2023 16:43

The facts section on the bear cam website says that grizzly bears are a type of brown bear that live inland. Browns are coastal. Therefore I'm sure brown bears have eaten people.

Sinamin · 06/10/2023 16:50

Is anyone else struggling with who to vote for today, I've been humming and hawing all day and had no idea it could be this difficult lol.

therealcookiemonster · 06/10/2023 16:57

OK... we need to clarify there is a difference between attacking (often in defence) and hunting to eat. bears do NOT eat people... maybe if they are v desperate. but not usually. I mean even humans eat people but we don't accuse all humans of being cannibals. I feel like the bears, like many other carnivores are victims of rumour mongering and frankly, slander.

@WhiskersPete I am not following the logic... does that mean everyone in Cornwall eats people?

ps i have literally spent all day watching these beauties and now about to eat some salmon...

PonyPatter44 · 06/10/2023 16:57

Holly for the win!

Sinamin · 07/10/2023 00:46

If I'm reading the Matchup charts correctly it looks like Grazer is up against 747 (Bear Force One) next! Yikes! Did he get an automatic pass into this later round?

I've added Fat Bear Week as a suggested agenda item for my meeting tomorrow.

In fairness, a Fat Bear agenda item would improve any meeting.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 07/10/2023 08:15

I haven't checked, but the OP went up on the second day of voting, so I missed the first vote. Could Bear Force One (love this!) have won that first match?

drspouse · 07/10/2023 09:23

Voting alert! My favourite Holly is up for voting 5 pm UK time today.

RipePeach · 07/10/2023 11:17

Oh I love this thread! And now I am completely over invested in these gorgeous fat bears ❤️

wednamenov · 07/10/2023 15:01

Preparing myself to vote for Holly, and Grazer again.

Do you think, when these fat bears are in the water, that their skin actually gets wet? Or does all that fur keep them dry-ish? I can't figure out why they need all that floof in winter on dry land, if they can wallow for hours in icy water.

I expect that their floof is waterproof.

They're going to hibernate - if you were camping outside in winter (even in a den) I bet you'd want floof.

GCAcademic · 07/10/2023 16:23

Thank you for this act of public service in bringing this to our attention, OP. And also to the pp who linked to the live cam. So gorgeous 😍

therealcookiemonster · 07/10/2023 17:07

I wonder if the bears would be interested in watching a live stream of mumsnetters poring over their phones voting for and watching bears...

a bit like gogglebox. then they comment on our reactions...

That's the two I've just voted for 😀

therealcookiemonster · 07/10/2023 17:19

@ErrolTheDragon common misconception, bears don't hibernate. they go into a deep sleep known as torpor.

There are sun bears too. They look like they're covered in velvet.

TeslasPigeon · 07/10/2023 17:30

And I thought it was just me!

LostAtTheCrossRoad · 07/10/2023 17:31

Grazer and Holly are crushing the males so far today!
