A family I know recently moved into their new home and received a disturbing card implying a curse on their new home, with a mention of their children being at risk of the curse. After sharing this card in the neighbourhood group chat, it was discovered that others received a note, supposedly from the new family, asking that no one come and introduce themselves to them. This note also had matching handwriting to the card received.
It is clear that whoever sent this note wanted to make this family feel unwelcome. But it’s hard to understand why someone would be so malicious which. The entire situation has made this family feel unsettled in their new home which they have worked very hard for.
Any opinions on why someone would send such nastiness?
I would also like to add that this is a mixed race couple who have moved to a predominantly white middle class area, could this be related to race?

How the heck would we know?! Maybe the family has an enemy that’s followed them to the new house. Maybe the family have been randomly picked on? Maybe the person doing this is just a cunt? There really is endless reasons

If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck...

Part way through I thought to myself 'ok, they're either from an ethnic minority or are a same sex couple.'

So yes, it's looking like racism to me.

Fitz1987 · 04/10/2023 14:11

@PinkMoscatoLover is that not the point of Mumsnet to get other opinions Hmm

Fitz1987 · 04/10/2023 14:12

@TragicMuse yes that's what I thought because we can't seem to think why else anyone would do something like this. Their a friendly and polite family.

Exactly the same! Knew it would be one of the two.

Clearly some nasty piece of work on the street who wants to try and isolate this poor family. I bet a good portion of the street will know instantly which neighbour it is based on past batshit/nasty behaviour.

ErrolTheDragon · 04/10/2023 14:18

I know 'log it with the police' is a bit of a cliche but seriously, I think they should in case there's any further harassment or escalation.

I hope the rest of the neighbourhood is being supportive of them now!

Oh absolutely but what if this family in particular has some sort of life long enemy that’s behind this? How would MN even have a clue

I assume that the OP might have some idea if they'd had issues before they moved and might have mentioned it.

Maybe, maybe not. Maybe someone has a vendetta against the family or maybe it is race related!

The reason as to why is irrelevant here, some people are lunatics. I think reporting it to the police is the best bet but then again, what exactly can they do? I think a pp suggestions of cameras is a good one in hope to catch them out

CheeseCakeSunflowers · 04/10/2023 14:23

The most obvious answer is of course that its racist but It could be anything. One of them might be known to the writer who holds a grudge for some reason. The writer might be mentally unstable and doesn't like strangers moving in to the neighbourhood or they may have unwittingly done something to offend by parking their car in a space the writer considers theirs.

Blackcoffee1 · 04/10/2023 14:28

This is the plot of “The Watcher” tv show (which is based on a true story).

Fitz1987 · 04/10/2023 14:30

I doubt someone has a vendetta against the family as they are not the type to get involved in any type of drama and are a nice family.
When they first moved in the neighbours were all friendly but this then suddenly stopped which now makes sense. However, now that they know that this note wasn't sent by them the neighbours are being nice.
I believe they have reported it to the police but nothing has come of this so far.

I wouldn't concern yourself about it any more, OP..

If up to the family if they want to do anything about it.

Don't be outraged on someone else's behaif.

BodegaSushi · 04/10/2023 14:48

Was it signed, 'The Watcher'?

lilyblue5 · 04/10/2023 14:53

How horrible!! Poor neighbours. Also agree with PP. It is someone on the road and long standing residents will have a good idea who.
Nasty people.

exactly my thoughts

AFieldGuideToTrees · 04/10/2023 14:57

The police will probably not do anything but at least it's logged.

There's some nasty people about.

forgotmyusername1 · 04/10/2023 15:01

did they outbid anyone on the house?
maybe someone else wanted to live there and is holding a grudge

Georgeandzippyzoo · 04/10/2023 15:08

My ikitial thought wasn't racism but once you mentioned it, it's obviously a very strong possibility.
Whose house did they buy? Why was it up for sale? Family anger? Repossession? I once knew someone whose houŵse was repossessed and the hate they had for the new owners was astounding!

BTW I think you can definitely be outraged for someone else!

That was my first thought, someone else wanted the house and is going to extraordinary and unpleasant lengths to make the new owners sell up quickly.

Bleuuuughhh · 04/10/2023 15:10

As others have stated this the exact plot of Netflix’s “The Watcher”? Porky pies.

MK19590 · 04/10/2023 15:13

I think they've been watching too much crime thrillers on Netflix
