New home and hate mail

A family I know recently moved into their new home and received a disturbing card implying a curse on their new home, with a mention of their children being at risk of the curse. After sharing this card in the neighbourhood group chat, it was discovered that others received a note, supposedly from the new family, asking that no one come and introduce themselves to them. This note also had matching handwriting to the card received.
It is clear that whoever sent this note wanted to make this family feel unwelcome. But it’s hard to understand why someone would be so malicious which. The entire situation has made this family feel unsettled in their new home which they have worked very hard for.
Any opinions on why someone would send such nastiness?
I would also like to add that this is a mixed race couple who have moved to a predominantly white middle class area, could this be related to race?

I've seen this movie on Netflix.

Rasicm, obviously. Don't need to be a rocket scientist to work that one out

This thread, if real, is virtue signalling at its finest.

It was obvious before I'd reached then end iglf the OP that this was going to be about race/nationality or similar.

As pp said, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to work it out.

Yes, OK, OP, we get it. You've welcomed this new mixed race family into your white MC neighbourhood.

Yes, I agree with you.

(And you gave me a chuckle too!)

It's obvious someone who wanted to buy that house, but were outbid by them. They're hoping the cold shoulder from neighbours, will make them want to move on. Sharing it on the local face book, was genuis. A curse isn't real, they should just ignore any more.

Certainly sounds like a hate crime and race could be the issue. Its really down to the family though to decide how to proceed. If you have an active community I'd maybe think about making sure the new family are made welcome and know that this isn't the norm. Of course separately I'd probably be playing detective and trying to work out who's handwriting it is. Got any old Xmas cards?

Sorry NRTFT but this happened to someone I know and it was from the previous tenant.

I believe the landlord sold the home and she was the tenant (I can’t remember the full story but I’m sure it was owned by a family member who died and she thought it should have been hers) and for some reason blamed the new family.

She obviously had MH issues and it was very frightening for them but she didn’t do any major harm.

They logged it with the police and I believe their advice was to log everything to build a picture.

Of course it may not be the old tenants.

It's not "obvious".

Don't be silly 😜

How is it virtue signalling?

Someone has received hate Mail and OP has pointed out the very really possibility that it could be race related.

There have been been numerous instances of non white people moving to a white area and getting hate Mail or abuse.

Its a common thing unfortunately.

I’m not saying that’s what’s happening but it’s definitely not virtue signalling.

Where does one live to be part of a neighbourhood group chat?
What does one discuss on a neighbourhood group chat?
I'm so intrigued.
OTOH, everyone now knows new family is not note writer. I guess, actual note writer is not part of the neighborhood group chat or they would have known better. Hopefully, everything is well now.

Schadenfreudunsure · 04/10/2023 18:15

I doubt someone has a vendetta against the family as they are not the type to get involved in any type of drama and are a nice family.

You can never tell.

That kind of action has a strong motivation so the reasons are likely to be very strongly emotionally driven.

I'd say the most likely are
someone wanted to buy the house or really wanted someone else to buy the house (say a mother who wanted their daughter to buy a house nearby/nextdoor/in the same street), maybe got a deal and then was gazumped and has an agenda to drive out the family.

some other emotionally driven revenge - maybe a recently dumped mistress in love with the husband out to cause distress to the whole family she wishes was hers.

Personally, I wouldn't think it's racism as it is too malicious and speaks of an emotional agenda - it's two way action - letters to them and to neighbours. That's a concerted revenge plan. People who are racist are more likely to be direct and targetted at the people themselves in making life difficult I'd have thought.

Startingagainandagain · 04/10/2023 19:09

Potential reasons:

  • racism
  • an issue with the sale of the house: somebody else wanted to buy it and lost out? maybe a tenant who was evicted so the house could be sold?

Anyway, the first thing to do is to report it to the police in case this escalates into other forms of intimidation.

I would also have a chat with the neighbours because they might know who the local 'weirdo' might be...
