I have started a new job where I have to see and help people into work. I have been amazed by the amount of filthy, dirty people out there! These people are not disabled in any way and I get to know a lot about them and their circumstances. They smell of sweat, their hands and clothes are dirty (very dirty fingernails is common) and women's soles of the feet are literally brown! They are very unkempt and just don't seem to have any desire to be clean and fresh. Greasy hair is also common. Now I might get slated by some people but honestly, what has happened to people? I was taught to bathe twice a week making sure to wash everywhere, all the creases etc. Other days you have a good wash at the sink 2 or 3 times a day, washing under arms, face, genitals and feet! Do i say anything to them or could I be sued? How do you help people into work like this?

I really hope this is a troll, and OP isn’t really considered to be someone with the necessary values and professionalism required to work with vulnerable people.

Are some people on here so stupid that they cannot understand some people don't have enough money to survive let alone wash themselves and their clothes? These pearl clutching idiots are a disgrace.

Not if your electricity or gas is cut off or unaffordable.

And most people on MN are only too ready to tell people that you can't keep clean by a strip wash, only a shower will do.

NC as I do the same job, albeit in a management role.
If you're for real OP, get the hell out of your role. ASAP. They aren't the problem, your judginess is.
Don't say anything to the people you "help", but please do privately voice your opinions to your manager. If they're anything like me (ie actually suitedto this sort of job), you'll be worked out of that role in the blink of an eye.

Honest a god, get off your high horse.

I'm 43. I've got 3 degrees and can produce really nice cakes, food, paintings, diy, the lot. I can turn my hand to anything and enjoy growing my own food and bedding rabbits.

But I'm also bipolar. I'm a victim of childhood sexual abuse and I have CPTSD. Two weeks ago I was showering very happily every single morning and washing my hair and brushing my teeth and being a typical person with a busy day going on about life. Then something changed and I plunged into a depression so bad and so suddenly that I was hearing voices and was convinced my DH had turned against me and was about to leave me. I was positive there was a man outside my bedroom door all night. I wanted to die. I sat on the couch crying my eyes out every day for a week wishing I was dead. I didn't shower or brush my teeth or even change my pyjamas. My DH (God bless him) had to take 3 days off work and put up with me accusing him off all sorts while I smelled like a bin and was going through2-3 loo rolls a day and trying to remember where I put my secret emergency cutting kit last time I was manic.

Thankfully I've come out of it as of yesterday and I'm already a ashamed and embarrassed ( even though it's not my fault) and if I faced judgement from somebody like you then that would probably finish me off. You need a new direction in life.

Just wanted to say how brave that was of you to share that. I have EUPD so struggle at times too.

Notagreatyear · 04/10/2023 19:09

Obviously most in here have not seen poverty in real life so are ignorant about how awful living conditions and poverty can be.

I don't work in the jobcentre. It is a separate organisation. Many of them spend a fair amount of money on alcohol etc and complain they don't have enough to feed themselves or keep clean. You cut your cloth accordingly. Stop making excuses for the feckless.

You’re incredibly narrow minded, what you’re describing is people who are clearly struggling with either alcohol dependency or poor mental health or both. They’re commonly drinking so much they’re not leaving money to afford to eat, they’re wearing unclean clothes and don’t appear to wash themselves regularly and they’re having to deal with someone like you on a regular basis. All screams poor mental health.

I’m another person who thinks you’re in the wrong job as you appear to have no empathy or understanding of your client base at all.

Unfortunately they don't. If the boilers packed up and the kettles broken and the soaps run out and pay day is still a week away...

HerRoyalStressHead · 04/10/2023 19:15

You realise thousands of people do this.... because they aren't slobs.

Thousands of people do not use the disabled loos to get clean in because they've no hot water at home. They struggle, they go without a wash, they go without food, they may smell bad, they end up with people like you and OP judging them for being in poverty.
So yes you have a horrible attitude.

How do YOU know everyone else does what you did?

Many don't or can't, for various reasons.

HerRoyalStressHead · 04/10/2023 19:29

How do you know?

Because if everyone did what you did then there'd be no smelly people for you and OP to judge.

I never said it does mean that. I said that it's 1 reason among many that people may smell or have poor hygiene.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 04/10/2023 19:53

A significant proportion of social housing won't have showers in the first place, often has ancient tap fittings that makes a rubber shower head impossible to attach and even if there is a way of managing to jam a plastic mixer contraption onto a set of bath taps, there isn't enough water pressure to get more than a vague trickle.

And then there's being able to afford the hot water (or any water when you're on a meter) in the first place.
