@Spandauer

I'm not so sure re no further delays. It's a well known tactic to put forth your objections one at a time to delay, delay, delay. So it wouldn't surprise me if his legal beagles lodge a final protest on late Friday afternoon knowing it will mean the judge has to delay again to consider and make a ruling.

But then again, the whole Trump debacle from actually being elected in 2016 to his latest 'I won't sign an abortion ban' statement has made me cynical and pessimistic where any possible comeuppance is concerned.

I swear, sometimes I feel like I've been on a hallucinogenic 'bad trip' since election day 2016.

I've always sort of believed in the 'born under a lucky star' thing and have known ONE person who always seemed to come up roses no matter what they did. But since Trump, I'm convinced it's a real thing.

So, so true.

They say 'hope springs eternal' and it may be true. But there also seems to be Trump's flat foot (oh excuse me 'ankle spurs') just waiting to squash it like a bug.

Remember when we all thought Robert Mueller would save us?
That went well.

Ah yes. Many of us called that one wrong. Me and DH were shook, as the kids say, for a while after that.

Ah yes. Many of us called that one wrong. Me and DH were shook, as the kids say, for a while after that.

I think that might have been the start of it. We all truly believed Trump would get his comeuppance or at least that his cult would see clearly what a rat bastard he is. And instead it ended as a big nothing burger with the Cult believing even harder. Since then, every time he's slipped the noose it's just been adding insult to injury.

I think that's why many of us are no longer holding our breath. "Hope for the best, prepare for the worst". Or as the Who said "We won't get fooled again!".

BruceAndNosh · 12/04/2024 12:53

Currently on holiday in USA, obviously we're mainly in tourist areas rather than residential (and since we're playing golf, the residential areas we drive thru are affluent)
But have only seen one yard poster - for Nicki Hayley!
Plus one Trump 2024 Hat, and a Biden Harris bumper sticker.
Seems either it's too early, or people don't care, or don't want to announce their allegiance.
We have purposely avoided talking politics AT ALL with random Americans that we have been paired with to play golf!

AcrossthePond55 · 12/04/2024 13:39

@BruceAndNosh

Hope you're having a fab time and the weather is nice. We've been having really weird weather all over the country hope your golf schedule is not being impacted.

We returned about 3 weeks ago from our 6000 mile r/t RV trip to Disney World and back and we were pretty surprised at the lack of 'Trump 2024' stickers, yard signs, painted barns, and 'Trump Trucks' flying American flags and nasty bumper stickers, especially from TX through the Deep South. When we did the same trip in 2015, 2019, & 2021 we were inundated with them, not to mention huge pro-Trump billboards. I really can't explain it. I'm hoping it means he's lost a lot of support, but from the polls it doesn't seem like it and his Cult is a vocal as ever. I think that some are ashamed but still plan to vote for him. And that the visual displays may ramp up over the summer as the election draws near.

As far as Biden/Harris, you can't underestimate the concern many have as far as vandalism and confrontation goes. People have had yard signs pulled up and destroyed or stolen, cars keyed or vandalized and people have been insulted or physically intimidated. I'm not saying that's constant or widespread, but it does happen enough to make one think twice.

And I agree with not talking politics. Not many of us do if the other party is an 'unknown quantity'. But after 9 years of Trump as a political figure most of us have gotten pretty good at sniffing out his supporters, it usually doesn't take long in general conversation before they let slip a nasty comment about 'the gays', immigration, or Biden's age lol. I told DH on our trip that if anyone asked me about politics I was going to say I was Canadian, lol. Cowardly? Sure but as Mark Twain said "Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience".

republicans against trump

Nate White, a British writer penned the best description of Donald Trump I’ve ever read:

“Why do some British people not like Donald Trump?”

A few things spring to mind. Trump lacks certain qualities which the British traditionally esteem. For instance, he has no class, no charm, no coolness, no credibility, no compassion, no wit, no warmth, no wisdom, no subtlety, no sensitivity, no self-awareness, no humility, no honour and no grace – all qualities, funnily enough, with which his predecessor Mr. Obama was generously blessed. So for us, the stark contrast does rather throw Trump’s limitations into embarrassingly sharp relief.

Plus, we like a laugh. And while Trump may be laughable, he has never once said anything wry, witty or even faintly amusing – not once, ever. I don’t say that rhetorically, I mean it quite literally: not once, not ever. And that fact is particularly disturbing to the British sensibility – for us, to lack humour is almost inhuman. But with Trump, it’s a fact. He doesn’t even seem to understand what a joke is – his idea of a joke is a crass comment, an illiterate insult, a casual act of cruelty.

Trump is a troll. And like all trolls, he is never funny and he never laughs; he only crows or jeers. And scarily, he doesn’t just talk in crude, witless insults – he actually thinks in them. His mind is a simple bot-like algorithm of petty prejudices and knee-jerk nastiness.

There is never any under-layer of irony, complexity, nuance or depth. It’s all surface. Some Americans might see this as refreshingly upfront. Well, we don’t. We see it as having no inner world, no soul. And in Britain we traditionally side with David, not Goliath. All our heroes are plucky underdogs: Robin Hood, Dick Whittington, Oliver Twist. Trump is neither plucky, nor an underdog. He is the exact opposite of that. He’s not even a spoiled rich-boy, or a greedy fat-cat. He’s more a fat white slug. A Jabba the Hutt of privilege.

And worse, he is that most unforgivable of all things to the British: a bully. That is, except when he is among bullies; then he suddenly transforms into a snivelling sidekick instead. There are unspoken rules to this stuff – the Queensberry rules of basic decency – and he breaks them all. He punches downwards – which a gentleman should, would, could never do – and every blow he aims is below the belt. He particularly likes to kick the vulnerable or voiceless – and he kicks them when they are down.

So the fact that a significant minority – perhaps a third – of Americans look at what he does, listen to what he says, and then think ‘Yeah, he seems like my kind of guy’ is a matter of some confusion and no little distress to British people, given that:

• Americans are supposed to be nicer than us, and mostly are.

• You don’t need a particularly keen eye for detail to spot a few flaws in the man.

This last point is what especially confuses and dismays British people, and many other people too; his faults seem pretty bloody hard to miss. After all, it’s impossible to read a single tweet, or hear him speak a sentence or two, without staring deep into the abyss. He turns being artless into an art form; he is a Picasso of pettiness; a Shakespeare of shit. His faults are fractal: even his flaws have flaws, and so on ad infinitum.

God knows there have always been stupid people in the world, and plenty of nasty people too. But rarely has stupidity been so nasty, or nastiness so stupid. He makes Nixon look trustworthy and George W look smart. In fact, if Frankenstein decided to make a monster assembled entirely from human flaws – he would make a Trump.

And a remorseful Doctor Frankenstein would clutch out big clumpfuls of hair and scream in anguish: ‘My God… what… have… I… created?' If being a twat was a TV show, Trump would be the boxed set.”

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 13/04/2024 21:06

That measured complaint from Nate White is still brilliant. Thank you.

What else is new lol? His 'angry face' is about all we see on him these days. I hope he's angry enough to have permanent heartburn.

It's 7 am here, I just got up. Since I'd like to be able to keep my breakfast down, I'm not turning the telly on for a bit.

Blackcats7 · 15/04/2024 15:35

@bluecomputerscreen thank you for posting that. I liked it so much I have just reposted the original text on my fb. I totally agree with the feeling of bewilderment that any decent people can ignore his completely obvious faults which he seems to glory in rather than try to hide. Also that you never see him genuinely laugh except at his own cruelties and there seems no humanity or kindness in him even with his own family.
I frequently post into the abyss on fb though as most of my friends seem to be right wing and one (a Canadian living here in the UK) even actually likes Trump. But I keeping chipping away in the hope of providing an alternative perspective.

Summary of this morning's court goings on.

Judge Merchan denies Trump's second recusaI motion. Evidence from National Enquirer's stories to be allowed, except those regarding Melania's pregnancy during McDougal affair. Access Hollywood tape transcript and Washington Post email chain will be admitted, but snippet from E. Jean Carroll case deposition is excluded.

No start on the jury selection yet but just saw this on MSNBC Xwitter - Apparently the legalese (which is a tad confusing) means the prosecution is going to force the defence to show why Trump shouldn't be held in contempt for violating the gag order.

Trump gets gagged, McCarthy gets booted. What's next in Trumpworld?
DuncinToffee · 15/04/2024 18:21

That was weird, I saw your original post in my threads I am on preview, clicked on it and it had changed 😅

Spandauer · 15/04/2024 18:25

Looks like the jury selection is going to be a marathon. How Trump will contain himself through it all be "interesting "!

From Washington Post.
The court may have to sift through hundreds of potential jurors to find a dozen — plus alternates — who are confident that they can set aside any feelings they have about Trump and decide the case solely on the facts and the law.

Trump asserts his ‘Antommarchi rights’ in court
. By Perry Stein

Donald Trump’s attorney Todd Blanche said the former president wants to be present for bench conferences during the jury selection process of the trial. That’s highly unusual for a defendant to do and is not allowed in every court jurisdiction.

But it is allowed in New York, and is known as asserting one’s “Antommarchi rights.” That refers to a defendant’s right to be present at all stages of relevant questioning of potential jurors, including when a judge has a sidebar to discuss a private issue of a prospective juror, so they can see a potential juror’s facial reactions to questions and discussions.

Antommarchi rights are named for Domingo Antommarchi, who had his drug conviction overturned on appeal because he did not get to participate in those sidebars.

“Present Trump wants to be present at everything,” Blanche said. Merchan warned that if Trump disrupts the proceeding, he could be jailed and the proceeding would continue in his absence.

Spandauer · 15/04/2024 18:43

Hope the court artists get a close up of the old man sleeping (drool and all 🤮)

SerendipityJane · 15/04/2024 19:14

The longer Trump spends in court, the less time his has to grift. Obviously no one would deliberately drag our juror selection to tie him up or as long as possible. But then again I can remember the moment when Jim Hacker realised that his insistence he see "all the paperwork" was merely an invitation to be drowning in minutiae

It's also a singular signal that these proceedings really matter to Trump.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 15/04/2024 19:42

Or is it that he is legally obliged to attend? I don't know what the law is on that, but I thought he had been complaining all the time that having to be in court four days a week meant he was unable to campaign.

AcrossthePond55 · 15/04/2024 21:25

I don't think he's falling asleep 'on his own'. I think they have him drugged to the eyeballs to keep him calm and avoid outbursts.

@AskingQuestionsAllTheTime Yes, defendants in criminal cases are legally required to be present every day of their trial. They can be removed from the courtroom for 'bad behaviour' but are then shut in a cell with a closed circuit TV to observe the proceedings.
