AIBU to think this guy is a Halloween fun sponge?

Now, I hate Halloween with a passion, always have always will, so I do the Mumsnetty thing of not opening my door to Trick or Treaters on the night, but some random bloke has decided to create a set of rules and regulations that he (seriously, really seriously) expects people to follow:

With the spooky season upon us: A few people have asked me draw something up to avoid a repeat of last years Halloween. Here are a few ideas I’ve thought of – am welcoming feedback on this consultation

1. Do you really need to buy decorations and toys that are single use plastic
2. No misleading signs in shops and bakeries, pubs and public buildings. “e.g. danger keep out”
3. No flashing lights or loud noises that could be challenging to a persons of additional needs
4. No outfits that are frightening to dogs
5. No trick or treating on main roads, LTN ‘s or other special roads ONLY.
6. Any houses wishing to participate must pre-register (cannot be a house near a dog park).
7. Any snacks must be accompanied by an allergy sheet – it the responsibility of the “candy donor” to check for allergies from a responsible adult
8. Families wishing to trick or treat must pre-register 10 working days in advance and specify their route and times along side details of the fancy dress. For neighbours via this app to lodge any objections.
9. Any decorations deemed inappropriate to be removed promptly upon regular patrol
10. No children under 9

The only point I agree with is no.1 - AIBU in thinking let people live, it's one night?

Who IS this guy? I would definitely ignore.

Well, he has two posters backing him up, one of whom had an issue last year with fake danger signs post all over the toilets.

Last year I had an issue in the local Pub with danger signs all over the toilets so I wasn’t sure if I could use them. Ended up having to go home to use the bathroom. Clearer signage should be mandatory. Just a simple sign to say what is a Halloween decoration what’s not would be fine.

This is making me laugh imagining the sign: "DANGER! KEEP OUT! (This is only a decoration and the toilets are open as normal.)"

It's fairly obvious what's a decoration and what's not, given that faulty toilets are not usually signposted in 'Chiller' font with fake blood drips.

Has anyone responded to him? Or is it not an interactive page?

I want to respond to him 😂

I responded to critique his use of a decorative font for the main body of the text in his missive.

See, I usually hate Halloween celebrations. I think it's an Americanism too far for me.

But this? I'd have to go all out with decorating and everything...totally unregistered and unregulated. Whatever the fuck that means.

It's just not British, is it?😁

I'd be actively making and buying decorations the moment I saw that post if it was in our neighborhood. It is the British way!

It's not an Americanism - Halloween is Celtic and has always been celebrated in Ireland and Scotland.

9. Any decorations deemed inappropriate to be removed promptly upon regular patrol

I have questions:

▪︎ Who is in the patrol? Do we get uniforms?

▪︎ Will there be a checklist, rules and guidelines of what is considered appropriate/inappropriate?
i personally dont like witch decorations.
Witches are unfairly misrepresented
Look at the poor witch is Hansel and Gretal - if someone came along and ate my house, I'd be pissed off too.

▪︎ What are the penalties and consequences if someone refuses to promptly remove thier inappropriate decorations?
Can we arrest them?

I need to know!

Lindy2 · 04/10/2023 11:29

Well someone has too much time on his hands.

Just because someone posts something on Facebook it doesn't mean anyone has to pay attention to it.

I rather like Halloween. Trick or treating is a lot of fun in our village.

Those that enjoy it take part. Those that would rather opt out are left in peace.

No need for any rules. You either put up Halloween decorations outside your house or you don't. Job done.

BarnacleBeasley · 04/10/2023 11:31

I think the main flaw in the system is that 100% of local people and businesses are unlikely to be on the neighbourhood page.

snowgirl1 · 04/10/2023 11:31

I'd reply with "haha, good joke"

Aposterhasnoname · 04/10/2023 11:31

That is hilarious! I wish someone on our app would do this.

takealettermsjones · 04/10/2023 11:32

Offer to make him his very own patrol hat.

Helena Bonham Carter Reaction GIF

I shall be engaging the services of a whole gaggle of under 9s this year to optimise our sweet haul. Costumes may scare dogs (you could maybe just not take your dog out for the hour people are out guising 🤷🏻‍♀️), don’t be such a numpteetastic drama lama that you couldn’t possibly work out a “DANGER” sign - probably dripping with “blood” - might be a decoration or that you can’t possibly ask a member of staff if they’re ooo (did they go back to the pub after having nipped home?! 😂), if you’ve got allergies don’t accept food you don’t know is ok and are the people authorising the pre-registration also in the Decoration Patrol?!

What a dick.

amusedbush · 04/10/2023 11:35

I'm an uptight stickler with a love for rules and order, and even I would comment "what a fucking geek" under that post.

BarnacleBeasley · 04/10/2023 11:36

My dog is fine with halloween costumes but is scared of the children coming out of the local karate class.

ClaribelLowLieth · 04/10/2023 11:39

Not sure why but this made me laugh out loud - and I'm more of a wry smile type =

  1. No outfits that are frightening to dogs
Lolapusht · 04/10/2023 11:39

Also, I require clarification on No. 5. His “ONLY” obfuscates the meaning of the preceding directive.

Not this costume then?

Pretty sure he's just cut-and-pasted that from somebody in one of those American districts where they have a formal board of residents that can enforce things like making sure people mow their lawns regularly etc. The 'candy donor' line is is a giveaway, as is the dog park reference. 'Dog parks' are really rare here. He's just made a couple of changes to make it look more British.

In the UK there would be nobody to administrate any of this stuff - eg who patrols? Who decides the criteria for appropriate decorations? Who do you 'register' with? It's bollocks, just ignore it?

He's referenced LTNs though, which I don't think are an American concept.

I also think it's horrible to exclude children who live on boundary roads from participating if they want to. As if it's not rubbish enough having to breathe in excess pollution and put up with excess traffic on a boundary road as a child, so that those living within LTNs can benefit, you're now not allowed to trick or treat on your own road either? Ridiculous.

And wtf is a 'special' road?!

I'm amazed that he has so much time on his hands tbh.

Silvers11 · 04/10/2023 11:48

@Hadjab - are you in the Uk or the USA?

Mothership4two · 04/10/2023 11:50

If this was on our local Neighbourhood page there would be a pile on of sarcastic and/or humorous comments

...bit like MN

Halloween isn't American, it's comes from the Celtic festival Samhain. It's hugely celebrated in Ireland, simarly to the US, it's so big in America because of the influx of Irish immigrants in the mid 1800s.

mondaytosunday · 04/10/2023 11:57

Ridiculous- yes the first point is something to think about, but the rest is just plain stupid. No kids under 9? I'd say the vast majority of kids in our neighbourhood are well under that age. Not near a dog park? That would knock out half the houses as one of the most family populated street surrounds a park. Pre register? With whom? Him? Allergies? For goodness sakes!
I hope you or someone in your neighbourhood (or several of you) respond with a reality check.

Bloody love Halloween. I don't have the time / inclination to decorate anymore, but this would make me go ALL OUT with flashing everything, everywhere! And sounds. And smoke. and LOADS of misleading signs. I would buy them for every local business.
