To chuck the Avon book in the recycling.

So I know there's someone out there trying to make a living and good for them. But i don't want Avon stuff. My choices are to

a leave it out on the step where it'll likely get wet
b keep it in the house but I'm unlikely to be here when they call back
c (and this is my preference) chuck it in the recycling with the rest of the unsolicited trash.

I'm an Avon Lady! I earn a nice bit to top up my main job salary. Seriously reps are earning Big Money; especially if you are digitally minded. So u have your paper brochure customers and your online store customers. I earn 30% commission, I've been doing it 23 years and I have 120 customers.

It's still junk and junk from a pyramid scheme, get rid and give them a job catalogue to replace it

I sell Avon. We have to pay for the brochures. Please just leave it on the step with a little note asking politely to not deliver again as you're all set for cosmetics or similar.
If you do get another after that then by all means recycle but we do give the brochures to more than one person and the one you give back will be moved on to the next route.

Nah I'll just recycle it the first time.

This has just meant I feel better just chucking it. Sorry.

Yes they do have to pay for the books. I binned one as my puppy chewed it and the Avon rep wasn’t too impressed!

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 03/10/2023 21:42

That's an awful lot of paper. Do the products actually change that much in three weeks - or is a new book that's pretty much the same as the last one but with a different picture on the cover just an excuse to try to stimulate more orders?

I hadn't even thought of it being trade waste. I bet none of them do actually dispose of the old books legally.

Cheeky thing! What about you not being impressed with her at throwing her litter to where your puppy is, which could have made your puppy ill.

That reminds me of the other thread from a little while ago where the neighbour's little girl kept putting actual bits of random rubbish through OP's door and she had to keep making sure that she got to it before her dog did.

Julimia · 03/10/2023 21:43

Whatva strange idea you have. Most people are lovely and thoughtful.

Jeannie88 · 03/10/2023 22:34

Not known any to come back for it tbh so use for art with nieces x

Julimia · 03/10/2023 22:35

What a load of patronising ill informed rubbish. Feeling obliged to buy says nothing about the product but everything about your self esteem, or lack of it.

JustAMinutePleass · 01/10/2023 23:32

The books belong to the rep. Expect an invoice if you recycle / destroy it - and Avon reps get support from Avon to pursue CCJs. Not worth it. Just leave it on the doorstep in a plastic bag

Agree that the book should be left out but a ccj for an Avon book?😄 Do you work for Avon?

sweetdreams33 · 04/10/2023 01:14

I tried selling Avon a few years ago. It's a lot of work for very little. But don't just throw it out. When you start off as a representative you have to buy the kit. Including the books you give out. So, you are basically throwing their money out. There must be somewhere you can leave it outside. And I would let that person know that you are not interested, now or in the future.

Didshejustsaythatoutloud · 04/10/2023 01:31

Ffs, just leave the book on the step. Nobody does this for fun. They are just trying to make an extra bit of cash in this ' cost of living crises". Have some basic humanity people, its not that big a deal in the grand scheme of things.

RSSN · 04/10/2023 05:49

I can't believe Avon door to door is still happening in 2023 or Avon at all. Gosh I remember it from the 70's/80's as a child.
I remember soap on a rope too!

Oh wow yes, soap on a rope! My father received a few of those back in the day from us kids for Christmas 😂

Caulifloweristraditional · 04/10/2023 07:47

Oh my goodness, do people still sell these? It is a pyramid scheme and nothing more! I think you should put the brochures in the bin personally, it is absolutely not on dumping rubbish on your property. It is even more cheeky expecting it to be left there, advertising to the world that you are not at home! The concept of dumping on your doorstep is so outdated in 2023, at least all of the other MLM's have moved online so it's easier to block and delete the huns from school who send you Facebook requests. Perhaps if enough people throw away the brochures, it'll encourage them to leave the insidious pyramid scheme!

Get mad at Avon for luring people into an exploitative business model, not at the people who get the unsolicited tut shoved through their door.

@JustAMinutePleass A CCJ for chucking away an unsolicited Avon book?! This is the funniest thing I've read on mumsnet for ages!

I know. But legal knowledge amongst MNers is very poor (no doubt mine is very poor in many areas but not in consumer law, and I would expect people to educate themselves in the areas that affect them, like consumer law and employment law from a personal perspective, or eg tax if you run your own business).

enchantedsquirrelwood · 04/10/2023 09:02

Junk mail is annoying enough when you have to pick it up off the mat and shove it straight in the recycling, let alone when it comes with instructions on how to deal with it and an expectation that you must remember to be on your best behaviour when rejecting it

Or having to be polite to cold callers. Nope, if your service is any good people will be recommending you on local social media. You don't need to knock on doors and disturb people.

Of course they have to pay for it, it’s marketing collateral – same as my gardener paid for his leaflets he puts through doors but also his gardening equipment, same as most businesses (not that being a MLM victim is running a business) have set-up costs, same as I pay for website hosting for my freelance work, but I wouldn’t stick my laptop through someone’s letterbox and expect to get it back. If you can’t make your MLM participation profitable without counting overhead costs such as people recycling your junk mail, you shouldn’t be doing it.

The funniest knock on the door I ever got was an older man who just said, "Horse muck." I was a little confused and said, "Sorry." He repeated, "Horse muck." I stood there looking confused and then he said, "Do you want to buy some horse muck for the garden." I didn't.

My neighbour assured me it was excellent horse muck. I still didn't want any.

We had a horse poo man knock on the door a few weeks ago! I never knew this was a thing, he had a uniform a bit like a victorian ice cream seller 😂

I kept his card, I do buy horse poo once a year in the spring.

Morgysmum · 04/10/2023 10:50

Leave it outside, in a plastic bag, with a note, telling them that you don't want the book again.
They have to pay for the book, so if you recycle it, the person, has to pay for it out of there pocket and loose the revenue, till the new books arrive.
You do expect to loose a few to rain, but it still hurts when you have to buy them in.

SurprisedWithAHorse · 04/10/2023 11:30

I've never bought from Avon but it was on my list of potentials to try (via the website). Definitely won't ever buy from it now, though. It's misleading about being cruelty free, too.

SleeplessinSeattle69 · 04/10/2023 11:47

Not the point of the thread but Avon Glimmersticks are bloody brilliant eyeliners. I have them in 3 colours. About a fiver on Amazon.
