To chuck the Avon book in the recycling.

So I know there's someone out there trying to make a living and good for them. But i don't want Avon stuff. My choices are to

a leave it out on the step where it'll likely get wet
b keep it in the house but I'm unlikely to be here when they call back
c (and this is my preference) chuck it in the recycling with the rest of the unsolicited trash.

Surely the idea of distributing catalogues to people at home must now be dead and gone as a business, in the age of the internet - except maybe for demographics who don't always tend to be online?

Here's a 48-page catalogue with a few hundred items in it... or alternatively, you can grab your phone and find tens of millions of items of all kinds, from around the whole world, in a few clicks.

reallypuzzledoverthis · 03/10/2023 17:15

Did you write your address on the note? When she went through she might not have known which house it was if not

reallypuzzledoverthis · 03/10/2023 17:16

On a positive note, I am yet to find a bubble bath which smells as nice and creates as many bubbles as the Avon ones so I’ll keep ordering any my rep will keep earning a bit of money, win win!

Because I’ve got a pram to get down the steps and a four year old who loves tripping over things. I’ll put it in the bin. But KINDLY.

Quite, and I have a neurological condition which means I trip easily at the best of times.

It seems Avon makes the money from the reps buying the catalogues. Much like how Younique reps (if that shit's still around) had to buy stock themselves every month to stay active and make "sales".

Kentucky83 · 03/10/2023 18:00

I sell Avon. We have to pay for the brochures. Please just leave it on the step with a little note asking politely to not deliver again as you're all set for cosmetics or similar.
If you do get another after that then by all means recycle but we do give the brochures to more than one person and the one you give back will be moved on to the next route.

riceuten · 03/10/2023 18:10

The advice about having to return the catalogue is wrong - it’s unsolicited, they do this at their own risk. The ‘Avon ladies’ pay for each catalogue and are supposed to collect them with any orders a couple of days later. You may be surprised (or not) as to how many sit on the front step for weeks Afterwards

But don't the reps realise that, in the modern age, it's like trying to sell people camera film or VHS video recorders? Surely the reps buy them in the hope of making a decent living from it? Do people still buy it that way - especially when you can buy Avon stuff itself online, let alone all the many, many other brands that are also available.

Yes but of course they use a bit of good old guilt tripping to get people to spend. Despite the fact Avon makes the majority of the profit not the reps people are guilted into supporting. Such a morally dubious business model, the money spent is largely spent by reps and their families and friends who feel obliged to support them

keeptheaspidistra · 03/10/2023 18:56

What a load of absolute nonsense... a ccj over a catalogue? I don't think so!

I usually leave them out. Tempted to start binning after reading that response.

fetchacloth · 03/10/2023 19:01

Leave it in the plastic bag on the doorstep.
If it's still there a week later, bin it.

That's a very good point, actually. I suppose it's much easier to say "No thank you, not interested" when it's a stranger, but quite a lot harder when it's your Aunty Sheila and she relies on it to pay her bills.

Nodancingshoes · 03/10/2023 19:03

Just stick a post it note on it saying 'no more thanks'. Job done. I used to do Avon years ago and I hated scouting out a new area - a man threw a book back at me once! I used to put a note on for people to tick if they didn't want me to deliver to them again. I've got an Avon lady now- I was pleased when I found a book through my door. I don't order much but I like the foundation.

Julimia · 03/10/2023 19:16

Leave it out on step with a POLITE note saying Please dont leave any furhur books. Simple. No problem certainly no big issue. Long established 'avon lady' here.
Ps. AVON sells it self no lĺneed to push it

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 03/10/2023 19:17

It's still making work for people, though. Imagine if everybody posting junk mail through your letterbox returned and asked for it back, if you're not interested, so that they can re-use it.

I think it's important to realise that it matters immensely more to you than it does to the householders - and it is quite a special favour that you're expecting of them all; it's not their duty.

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 03/10/2023 19:21

I'm not suggesting that people should go out of their way to be rude; but why is it incumbent on them to make sure that they're super nice and polite when somebody asks for their junk mail back?

Junk mail is annoying enough when you have to pick it up off the mat and shove it straight in the recycling, let alone when it comes with instructions on how to deal with it and an expectation that you must remember to be on your best behaviour when rejecting it.

Julimia · 03/10/2023 19:25

'Dont think anyone does it for fun ' yuk what does that statement tell you about its originator. You have no idea and uour stereotypical assumptions are so wide of the mark its laughable.

Fluffmum · 03/10/2023 19:31

My DH did Avon for a year when we were skint don’t Chuck the book the reps have to pay for them. Put it in a plastic bag and leave it out front

sugarrosepetal · 03/10/2023 20:18

Exactly. This is totally batshit. They would have to prove you had possession of the book in the first place. How would they do that if it had been binned? Or without a warrant (which they wouldn't get for a fkn Avon book, let's be real)

Editedtoadd · 03/10/2023 20:30

They go into the recycling bin here.
I don't feel any hesitation on this as I have 3 signs up with variations on no junkmail/no unsolicited catalogues/no sales (longish drive, so one on the gate, one by the door, and one on the letter box itself).

VeraMay · 03/10/2023 20:40

Do you buy anything. If not, put a note in next time asking not to deliver anymore.

That’s like the folks who rummage around your skip asking you to ‘politely’ organise it better so it makes it easier for them to fish stuff out.

Just no. I don’t exist to facilitate the side job of some random stranger. I have enough on my plate thanks.

Ramdogs · 03/10/2023 20:54

@JustAMinutePleass A CCJ for chucking away an unsolicited Avon book?! This is the funniest thing I've read on mumsnet for ages!

jmh740 · 03/10/2023 20:56

MillicentTrilbyHiggins · 01/10/2023 23:15

If the reps pay for the catalogues, do they return them and get the money back? In which case why do they pay for them in the first place?

No they pay for the books and then when they are no longer needed they have to get rid of them, meant to get rid of them as commercial waste(not put them in the wheelie bin) when I was doing avon 10 years ago I paid about £15 for 100 books, the more oops you buy the cheaper they were, there was 18 books a year

The other poster who asked its about 20% commission on most things you sell but not labeled stuff that would be about 5% the people who make the big money with avon have teams of people working under them and then earn commission on their sales too.

WonkyBananas · 03/10/2023 21:03

If they get delivered here they now just get binned. I got fed up of leaving them out with a note to say I wasn't interested. The catalogue would sit there for days past the alleged collection date, until I got fed up and just tossed it. Once I got a note about three weeks after the collection date asking for it back. I ignored it and heard nothing more for a couple of months when another catalogue arrived.
