To ask the police why they are on my road?

I’m single and live alone on the ground floor. I live in a very, very quiet area (rural countryside, my village has <500 people in it). Crime rate is very low and I feel safe here. Rarely see or hear of any trouble.

Tonight there is a police car parked right outside my house, behind a civilian car it seems. The lights are flashing on the police car. It’s dark and not street lit so I can’t see much of what’s going on, and my Ring doorbell is out of range to pick up on what they’re saying. Because I’m alone and on the ground floor it’s really freaking me out. It’s been going on for about 40 minutes. Would I BU to contact the non emergency police number and ask what’s going on? I wouldn’t ask for details but even just to know what type of crime they’re here for would maybe (or maybe not) put my mind at ease. I’ve got a busy day at work tomorrow and it’s really stressing me out 😔

If the police are there you know whatever it is is being handled so no need to worry about it.

Marblessolveeverything · 01/10/2023 22:15

They are not going to disclose anything to you and you could just be bringing attention to yourself by whomever is involved.

MissHoollie · 01/10/2023 22:15

Don't worry they may have just stopped a driver and are doing checks

MatthewsMumFromTikTok · 01/10/2023 22:15

Totally unreasonable!

Can you imagine if we all did that? It's non of your business

NotReallySureWhatToThink · 01/10/2023 22:15

You're being ridiculous.

It doesn't affect you in any way at all and it's nothing to do with you. Lock your doors and go to bed FFS.

Why on earth are you so stressed out about it?

Please do not do this. If you are in any danger the police will let you know. I really don’t think knowing what type of crime may or may not be in progress is going to make you feel any less anxious.

chouxchoux · 01/10/2023 22:16

Wow these responses are so nasty! Wish I hadn’t posted at all!

Of all the things I've read on here this is one of the most stupid!

Flipflopflopflip · 01/10/2023 22:16

Do you really think they'll tell you 🤣
You don't need to know.

Mrsjayy · 01/10/2023 22:17

Just lock your door and peek out your curtains you are fine .just nosey.

MatthewsMumFromTikTok · 01/10/2023 22:17

Nasty! I think everyone is shocked at your sense of entitlement tbh!

Oysterbabe · 01/10/2023 22:19

You need to wind your neck in, it's none of your business.

NinaGeiger · 01/10/2023 22:20

There's not necessarily a crime in progress. Someone could be having a mental health crisis or they might be bringing someone bad news.

I’m sorry your small village is so crime-y. make sure you lock the doors. 5 times

GladAllOver · 01/10/2023 22:20

It may not be a crime at all. They do other enquiries - missing person?
But as said, not your business.

You just need to think if something bad was happening outside what would you do? You would call the police. Well the police are already there so there is nothing for you to worry about just let them do their job.

Fizzadora · 01/10/2023 22:22

I wouldn't need to ask the police in my village. 2 minutes and it's on the village Facebook page, including the issue/crime, protagonists and likely outcome of court case or any investigations😂😂

mrssanchez · 01/10/2023 22:25

Mind your own business, could be anything, unless you can help, butt out.

Thank you, I didn’t think of that so I appreciate your post.

I grew up in a dangerous country and I’m realising tonight how much anxiety I clearly still hold on to about the police/burglary/breaking and entering. But clearly I am being unreasonable and am a “cunt” so I will take that thought as i try and get some sleep.

Shadypaws23 · 01/10/2023 22:26

You're probably safest given the police are outside!

Lavender14 · 01/10/2023 22:30

I'd ignore the nasty message which is the one I presume has now been deleted.

Other posters have a point though, you may be feeling anxious for valid reasons given your past experiences but it doesn't give you the right to access your neighbours information. The police are there handling whatever is happening so I wouldn't worry any more about it. Maybe close the curtains, check you're locked up for your own peace of mind and stick a movie or something on to take your mind off it.

I think it's reasonable to want to know what 's going on, would you feel comfortable popping out and asking if there's anything you need to know? Part of police duty is to reassure citizens. Sleep well OP, relax and have a good day at work tomorrow.
