Unsure how I can afford these bills

I've just moved in with a mate who has different lifestyle habits.

Her room is heated all the time to 24 degrees and she uses the tumble dryer etc to dry clothes.

Last night she put the heating on when she was going to bed, and she's got a heated blanket.

Yesterday we spent £7 in total on gas and electric.

I think she just feels the cold more but I would I rather put of turning on the heat until it actually gets colder.

We split the bills. I though it would be cheaper to live together but it's actually more expensive :(

It's 20 degrees at 6pm! Does she have wealthy parents? Float around the house in a crop top?

She's going to be a VERY expensive housemate. I'd be looking for somewhere else to live.

You’ve literally made every excuse why you can’t broach the subject, simply say your energy costs will be huge if she doesn’t become more economical. Show her the daily useage, surely your online account is working to show this even if you have no bill yet? Explain where she’s going wrong and tell her that she either contributes more or reduces her use. You need to be honest stop going gently around her. You have a year of living together c you won’t last if you can’t talk about something as simple as bills

Well, today in the SE UK 10 minutes from the sea,it was 24c outside today. I've got an 11week old puppy, had to go outside with her at 1.30am it was 19c, I actually forgot to collect a dressing gown en route. Took pictures of the fabulous harvest moon. We still haven't found out where you live, poster. You said you haven't got a meter, that's odd, plus how do you know that you are spending £7 a day.

@dayofcheese she says she's cold. And as a blanket on etc.

Does she wear lots of layers?

jazzyfips · 01/10/2023 18:05

My heating has come on for around an hour in the morning about twice last month. Thermostat is set to 18. I too am in jeans and a T-shirt and am warm. I’ve occasionally popped a jumper on in the last couple of weeks but that’s been it. I’m in the north of England and it’s currently 17 degrees outside.

Winter2020 · 01/10/2023 18:09

Re the price of gas coming down - last year the government gave us all £400 off our electric bills over the winter period (reducing our overall gas/electric spend) which I haven't heard is happening this year so we could all still be paying more overall.

SomeCatFromJapan · 01/10/2023 18:15

I've had my heating on here and there the last couple of weeks - well insulated house but it's been dropping to around 18.5 overnight and it also feels a bit damp and chilly at present so a quick blast cosies things up again.

Ginmonkeyagain · 01/10/2023 18:36

Heating on when it is 18 degrees over night? Good lord, I can see why some people have such large heating bills now.

TeenLifeMum · 01/10/2023 18:39

I honestly was in a black vest top and denim long shorts sat in the garden. I’m in Somerset. My thermostat at 6.37pm says 22 degrees. I’ve just had a shower after being in the hot tub with dd2&3 so I’m now in a strappy nightie with the windows open. There have been cooler days but only in so much as I’d pop a cardigan on or use a throw over by legs in the evenings.

GiveMyHeadPeaceffs · 01/10/2023 18:42

There's bound to be a massive drip feed along soon since as far as I can see @onebornsecibd won't say where she is and why she thinks we're all lying when we say it's actually quite warm today. Hmm

Indoors has been dropping to 18 degrees overnight and first thing in the morning. It's been around 8/9 degrees outside. 18 indoors is a bit chilly for me especially this time of year.
Our heating bills are fortunately always moderate as our house is new and well-insulated.

onebornsecibd · 01/10/2023 18:44

@IMustDoMoreExercise no she doesn't. No dressing gown either which I think she thinks is beneath her.

I don't understand why you would put the heating on just as you are going to bed. I think it's something to do with a cold face...

Our house isn't well insulated

Because it's not the norm for people to be sitting out in a T-shirt and shorts.... especially as it's been raining where I live. It's not that warm:

Yes I think older houses feel colder. We've had the dehumidifier on as well. I'm personally ok with the cold but she's not.

@IMustDoMoreExercise no she says the heating should come on as she's cold.

OP posts:
CantFindTheBeat · 01/10/2023 18:56

OP,

I think heated blankets and heated throws are very cheap to run so that shouldn't be the issue.

It's the heating that's the problem.

There's not much you can do other than advise her that heating shouldn't go on until absolutely necessary, and use heated throws, hats and clothes until then.

GiveMyHeadPeaceffs · 01/10/2023 18:59

@onebornsecibd you seem to be deliberately ignoring all the people asking you where you are. No one is suggesting you sit out in shorts and tee shirt but plenty are suggesting that it's mild/warm for this time of the year.

Honestly, you need to have a conversation with your housemate (as lots of pp have said). If you're unable to speak to her and come to an agreement then, based on what you've said, you need to either break your contract or suck it up that bills will be through the roof.

I'm not going to tell the internet where I live.... it's been raining here today Ann's it's not gone above 18.

I've spoken to her and she says she doesn't want to use it. Says she's too cold and need to put on the heating....

@onebornsecibd
I would turn heater of in ur room, sit there while heating is on and tell her your not using it so won't be paying for it.

Fleabane · 01/10/2023 19:10

Is this just a moan thread? You've rejected all suggestions and ideas from sympathetic posters

Well what are you moaning about then?? Jesus op people are sympathising with you and saying it's not right for your friend to be having the heating on so much as it's pretty mild and you're just being a bit of a knob in some of your responses.

PinkMoscatoLover · 01/10/2023 19:23

What is actually the point of this thread? You clearly don’t want suggestions on what to do so what do you want?

onebornsecibd · 01/10/2023 19:24

@Ollifer did you read the posts before.... plenty of people suggesting "it's really warm, I'm here sunbaking and my whole family are in shorts, with the windows open". I doubt much of the uk has that weather.
