Sold my car

Posting here for traffic, i need some help
I sold my car the other day, 3 men turned up to look at it, once the sale was agreed I was counting the cash while 1 of them took the V5 from me, I asked for it back and he said he would sort it out..I'm not going to lie I felt pretty intimadated so I didnt argue with him. Long story short, I've been checking and the car still doesnt have any insurance and I have reason to believe he hasn't sent the v5 away. What can I do? I have texts messages to prove they have bought it. Hes giving me a name and address for him (who knows if these details are real) I'm really worried about speeding tickets etc, ive not been sleeping with worry. Their from a different town from me so if any speeding tickets did come through i can prove i was in that city. Any advice?

Ilikewinter · 30/09/2023 13:13

Sleeplessnightssss · 30/09/2023 13:15

Shit.

You are responsible as the seller for informing the DVLA, you could be fined:

Anyone selling the vehicle has to inform the DVLA of the transfer as a legal requirement, and failure to do so can result in a fine or prosecution

Phone the DVLA for advice?

WhereIstand · 30/09/2023 13:19

Curious how you checked the car doesn't have insurance though, do you mean tax?

LIZS · 30/09/2023 13:21

Do you have any email confirmation of tax you previously paid with it on? Dod you gat any refund for the unspent tax?

SnaccidentsHappen · 30/09/2023 13:21

Can't you get a replacement from DVLA? I'm sure I did this when I traded my car in as I couldn't find it

Sleeplessnightssss · 30/09/2023 13:21

No I mean insurance. You can check on askmid

Hi @Sleeplessnightssss
Could you send them a text to ask if it's been done?
I know how you feel, I remember selling my car and 2 guys turned up and were also quite intimidating.

But only if it’s owned by or registered to you which it still is in this case.

Sleeplessnightssss · 30/09/2023 13:35

@Shade17 I know.....

You can write to the dvla and tell them you sold the car on x date to x people and they will remove your details from the v5. Include your name address and registration number. This will also trigger the refund of any car tax due back to you.

I had to do this in Jan this year when the garage i sold my car to forgot to do it.

I rang them first to make sure I had the correct address.

Anewest · 30/09/2023 13:38

Call DVLA before they close, you only have 20 minutes... that's the best way to alleviate any concerns.

OnlyFannys · 30/09/2023 13:38

If you are still in contact can you ask him for the vin numbers you can sort your side out?

Sleeplessnightssss · 30/09/2023 13:43

@ToWonderWhyIBother this is great thankyou. I will do this

OP posts:
Sleeplessnightssss · 30/09/2023 13:44

@OnlyFannys i dont think he would give me it but I can try. I asked him to send me confirmation that he'd sorted it online snd he sent me a screenshot of the page before the confirmation page, which is why im feeling concerned about the whole thing

OP posts:
Sleeplessnightssss · 30/09/2023 13:45

Also i asked him for thr reference number from the v5 and he said he'd already sent it away
