Sold my car

Posting here for traffic, i need some help
I sold my car the other day, 3 men turned up to look at it, once the sale was agreed I was counting the cash while 1 of them took the V5 from me, I asked for it back and he said he would sort it out..I'm not going to lie I felt pretty intimadated so I didnt argue with him. Long story short, I've been checking and the car still doesnt have any insurance and I have reason to believe he hasn't sent the v5 away. What can I do? I have texts messages to prove they have bought it. Hes giving me a name and address for him (who knows if these details are real) I'm really worried about speeding tickets etc, ive not been sleeping with worry. Their from a different town from me so if any speeding tickets did come through i can prove i was in that city. Any advice?

When I sold my first car I didn’t realise I had to keep the form and send it to DVLA. When I found out, can’t remember if they contacted me or someone told me about it, I explained. They were fine about it so I would inform them.

DON’T PANIC!!

I had this. Though not involving dodgy blokes. Just buyer being crap about paperwork and like you I didn’t realise I needed to keep part of the V5.

You just need to write to DVLA with the details below.

If you go through that online form to where it asks for the V5 ID number, and scroll to the end, you’ll find this:

If you do not have a log book you must write to DVLA with:

  • your name and address
  • the vehicle registration number
  • the make and model
  • the exact date of sale
  • the name and address of the new keeper

you must include ALL those details. I listed them in that order on my letter and wrote the answers next to them.

The address to write to is

DVLA
Swansea
SA99 1BA

Complete a v62 form with their details on and pay £25 fee and the log book will then go into his name

@Sleeplessnightssss i can get you the VIN if you know the registration. Pm me if you need to

Sleeplessnightssss · 30/09/2023 14:33

@Daffidale thanks for this, I'm going to do this. Do you think it would be worthwhile also putting the new buyers phone number on the letter also.? I worry the name address hes given me is dodgy

This is so odd, there was a post on our local Facebook page the other day describing a very similar scenario. Think on that though they tried to take the car and the logbook without paying, then tried to short-change her in a number of ways.

Sleeplessnightssss · 30/09/2023 16:41

@Daffidale did you get a reply back from DVLA after you sent that letter?

Okay I have managed to get the VIN number (thankyou pp) do I request a new V5 which would need to be in my name then change the details over once I have received it, or do I fill out a V62?

I can’t recall exactly . I got a refund on the unused tax so I knew they’d had it and that was definitely some kind of letter.

You can also check online if the tax status has been updated . cCompare the end date . If the new owner has taxed it properly it’ll now be either 6 or 12 months away

Check if a vehicle is taxed

Check and report if a vehicle has up-to-date vehicle tax or is 'off road' (SORN)

About 10 years ago I sold a car through a paper the lad turned up 4 hours after he was due paid and took car without test drive.

2 weeks later CID at my door he had been stopped on motorway with a boot load of drugs and said he had just bought the car of me!

I thankfully had the advert and text messages as proof.

He obviously hadn’t changed the v5 but I had initiated that change a few days earlier.
