Help! Rebecca or Becky?

Rebeccaorbecky90 · 30/09/2023 03:03

Hello! Just hoping for some honest opinions on this.

My official name is Rebecca. Throughout my life I’ve been known as Rebecca, Bex, Becky, all sorts of nicknames! I think Rebecca is just one of those names that lends itself to being nicknamed. I used to be mainly Bex, then Rebecca, then for the last 5-6 years I’ve been mainly called Becky. I now work as a professional (think law, actuarial science, accounting - that type of field) and I’ve always been known as Becky to my colleagues and clients and I prefer Becky to Rebecca. I only get called Rebecca very occasionally now.

but I’m in my early 30s now and I’ve had a few comments from friends/family that Becky is a bit immature and silly and I’ve even heard it being called chavy before and that Rebecca is better. (I don’t agree with names being chavy, for the record, but I’ve seen it referred to as chavy on MN)

so I’m just looking for some very honest opinions please! What do you think of Becky vs Rebecca?

TIA!

Becky is definitely better than bex!

EmmaPaella · 30/09/2023 09:24

Becky is a lovely name. Rebecca also, I’d put that on your signature and carry on being a proud Becky.

OrangeBlossomPretty · 30/09/2023 09:24

What's wrong with Becky?!
Rebecca is fab.
I don't like Bex.

Bexamundo · 30/09/2023 09:24

I’m a Rebecca. I’m in a professional role and have always gone by Rebecca..but in part that’s because my surname begins with a B and I think Becky B-name sounds very twee! Also I work with some older people and if you say Becky, they hear ‘Betty’ 😆 I’m definitely not Betty! But I’ve worked with some people who prefer Becky and I don’t think of it negatively!

Dottiespotty · 30/09/2023 09:26

I prefer Rebecca , but Becky doesn’t seem unprofessional I just don’t like the name. Having said that I hate my own name and would choose Becky over my own !

I would use Rebecca in my email signature and any work webpages but no reason to stop people calling you Becky or to actually end your email “best regards, Becky” or whatever.

Loads of men and women do this at work.

This

Which is what most people do with names that are often abbreviated. No one tells Sue or Jon or Tony that they should be more grown up and only use Susan, Jonathan or Anthony.

Becky is a name that is fairly era specific so people are only just starting to come across it in senior professional roles as those children born in the late 70s and early 80s begin to fill them.

My Rebecca is known as Becky, Beck or Becs, almost never Rebecca. There's nothing wrong with any of them. She's almost 25.

Your family and friends are being rather rude and I'd be telling them so.

TheSpikySpinosaurus · 30/09/2023 10:06

You choose what you want people to call you! Don't put up with rudeness. What about Becca?

I don't think Becky is chavvy at all.

Goodthingsahead82 · 30/09/2023 10:09

I'm Rebecca but known as Becca. I hate being balled Becky only because I've never been called Becky throughout childhood, nothing wrong with it.
My teenage dd said that Becky is used as a slang for something I can't remember. I hate people using names in that way like Karen.

Highlyflavouredgravy · 30/09/2023 10:11

I think becky is lovely
You go with what YOU like and ignore what other people think

MossyMo · 30/09/2023 10:12

I can't imagine a man's similar shortened name being called immature or silly, whether Robert goes by Rob or Bob, Bert, Bertie. There's often a generational fashion over what nickname was preferred and at one time they'd have been more Bob's than Robs or Dick's than Rich.
Even if feel the full version of a name is more professional to use, if that person prefer's to go by a specific shortening it makes sense to signify that from the off and I know quite a few people who go by a completely different name to the one on their birth certificate like Mark instead of Richard but haven't legally changed their name.

FettleOfKish · 30/09/2023 10:13

I'm very rarely Rebecca, was always Becky as a kid and am now largely Bex, which I personally prefer and feel suits me better. A couple of people call me Becca, which I don't mind either.

Becky seems to have stuck at work and with a few old friends (although I'm slowly slowly trying to train people to use Bex instead).

My proper email signature is Rebecca but I generally sign off above that with Bex / Becky depending who the email is to.

None of the variations are wrong or better or worse, just go with what you prefer.

WestendVBroadway · 30/09/2023 10:17

I work with 2 X Becca and 1 Becc. I have no problem with Becky, but If asked for my opinion, I would say Becca sounds more child like.

Nevermind31 · 30/09/2023 10:19

No issue with any of those a… I mean, in a world where you get Bunny, Poppy, Bear and Princess joining, Becky is probably quite an old fashioned welcome change…

openallday · 30/09/2023 10:44

Bex and Becca are awful

Rebecca is nice. Just go with that

MrsCLogan · 30/09/2023 10:55

I’m a Rebecca but I never get called it despite actually liking my full name being used. I was Becca throughout my teenage years and always Bex to close family, never been Becky.

Personally I use Rebecca for work but still end up being Beck regardless!
Use whichever you prefer, no one should judge you on your choice for your own name.

Clarich007 · 30/09/2023 10:56

I think Rebecca is a lovely name, very classy, and does sound very professional.
To me Becky sounds a bit childish, so I can understand you questioning it.

Chrispackhamspoodle · 30/09/2023 11:09

I'm a Rebecca. My best friend called me Beck at primary school when we were 4 and that's what I've been known as since -intoducing myself and at work including all correspondence.Drs ,banks, booking things I use Rebecca as that's the name on my birth cert, passport and bank cards but I never use it otherwise.Beck is definitely my name - if someone calls me Becky it's like they have called me the completely wrong name so it's YOUR preference. No one else gets to say how you like to be called.

MWNA · 30/09/2023 11:10

Rebecca is my work name and Bec my home name.

MWNA · 30/09/2023 11:10

Love the beauty and formality of Rebecca.

2chocolateoranges · 30/09/2023 11:12

I prefer Rebecca.

BeckyWithTheGoodHair010101 · 30/09/2023 21:47

Becky is fine! I use all those names along with other diminutives interchangeably
