Help! Rebecca or Becky?

Rebeccaorbecky90 · 30/09/2023 03:03

Hello! Just hoping for some honest opinions on this.

My official name is Rebecca. Throughout my life I’ve been known as Rebecca, Bex, Becky, all sorts of nicknames! I think Rebecca is just one of those names that lends itself to being nicknamed. I used to be mainly Bex, then Rebecca, then for the last 5-6 years I’ve been mainly called Becky. I now work as a professional (think law, actuarial science, accounting - that type of field) and I’ve always been known as Becky to my colleagues and clients and I prefer Becky to Rebecca. I only get called Rebecca very occasionally now.

but I’m in my early 30s now and I’ve had a few comments from friends/family that Becky is a bit immature and silly and I’ve even heard it being called chavy before and that Rebecca is better. (I don’t agree with names being chavy, for the record, but I’ve seen it referred to as chavy on MN)

so I’m just looking for some very honest opinions please! What do you think of Becky vs Rebecca?

TIA!

I have a similar type name . People naturally shorten but to patients I use my full name .

Becky is fine .. I can’t imagine all the people who shorted my name been told they can’t anymore

Saggypants · 30/09/2023 07:58

I associate Becky with little girls rather than grown women.

Bec is the common nickname for adult Rebeccas where I'm from.

Doingmybest12 · 30/09/2023 08:00

What do you like and feel comfortable with,? I think you'd have noticed if your full name was more appropriate in the work setting. Personally I really don't like Becca , not sure why, sounds a bit babyish to me or something just a parent would say . But if I met a Becca I wouldn't think twice about it. Its not really something I'd bother to dwell on . I'd just want you to do your job well.

ThreePointOneFourOneFiveNine · 30/09/2023 08:07

Becky is absolutely fine. Your friends and family are rude. I teach and use a nickname at work that's not even a recognized abbreviation of my name, no one's said a word.

ActDottie · 30/09/2023 08:08

Becky is fine. I’m an actuary and we have a Becky a never think of her name being immature.

lemonyfox · 30/09/2023 08:27

I'm Becky to friends and family, but Rebecca in work. Even though it's my own name and I don't generally give a shit, I just can't bring myself to use Becky at work.

It all stems back from my first ever manager after graduating, scary Irish guy, he told me Becky was common and I shouldn't use it at work. If someone said that to me today I'd tell them to get fucked, but as an impressionable 21yr old it stuck with me and always has.

Lulabella1 · 30/09/2023 08:29

Rebecca. Don't like Becky.

Itcanhappeninanysituation · 30/09/2023 08:34

I'm a Becky, have been all my life. Funny enough, there was once 2 Becky's in my dept and I was known as "becky with the good hair" it still makes me laugh.

I rarely use Rebecca as people usually then call me Rachel (?!). Close friends and family call me Becks.

Mumteedum · 30/09/2023 08:37

If you feel more like 'you' by Becky then stick with it. You'll be judged on your professionalism and results in your line of work I would think? Or is that naïve of me?

I have a long name which I never go by. I'd feel funny if anyone used it at work or anywhere outside the doctors surgery.

Unicorn2022 · 30/09/2023 08:40

Becky is fine. I was speaking to the global counsel at Unilever yesterday and she's known as Becky. There's nothing wrong with it. I'm not a lover of Bex but that's just personal preference.

VeridicalVagabond · 30/09/2023 08:45

Hello fellow Rebecca!

I go by Reba with basically everyone, and have had equally stupid comments from people about it. No one wants to just call you Rebecca but everyone has an opinion about which of the many millions of nicknames you use.

Becky is fine. If it feels comfortable to you and feels like "you" keep using it! I know a 52 year old Becky so it definitely doesn't have an age limit.

JaninaDuszejko · 30/09/2023 08:49

Becky is nice, the Rebeccas at work are either Rebecca or Becky depending on their preference. I like Becca as well. Bex is horrible, because of the X and the fact that it sounds like the beer.

DustyLee123 · 30/09/2023 08:50

I’d ignore it. It’s rude to comment on a name you’ve been known as forever, and I find it quite snobby.

CaputDraconis · 30/09/2023 08:51

My sister's birth certificate says Becky not Rebecca. I don't like it personally as she doesn't have a "real" name to fall back on.

I woukd introduce yourself to new colleagues/clients as Rebecca, use Rebecca in your email signature etc. And if people call you Becky when they get to know you that's fine.

Jk987 · 30/09/2023 08:52

You've heard comments saying your name is immature??? Who says that about someone they love? Or are they strangers in which case why do you care?

everythingthelighttouches · 30/09/2023 08:53

I would use Rebecca in my email signature and any work webpages but no reason to stop people calling you Becky or to actually end your email “best regards, Becky” or whatever.

Loads of men and women do this at work.

Temporaryanonymity · 30/09/2023 09:05

I’m Rebecca.

Never been a Becky. Just call yourself what you like. I went through a period of wanting to be Reb but it never stuck.

gotomomo · 30/09/2023 09:08

I'd use Rebecca on all official correspondence eg email signature, business cards but continue with Becky for those that know you ... I do this (different name but similar number of shortenings) as do many friends eg Phil's have Philip, Dave's have David, Rich has Richard. The only people who shorten my name though are friends/colleagues not clients

StillWantingADog · 30/09/2023 09:11

Becky is very common round here for women of my age (early 40s). I work in professional services and I think using Becky is perfectly fine, as many people I know do, one of whom is extremely senior and influential.

personally I would use Rebecca on business cards and email/letter sign offs (only)

Mecurytolibra · 30/09/2023 09:12

My birth certificate says Becky I run a department I’ve never had anyone say it was unprofessional.

I have had lots of people argue with me about my name as they are sure I’m actually a Rebecca. Including one boss who set me up on every system at work as Rebecca and then got pissed off when they all had to be changed.

MissMillyFluff · 30/09/2023 09:13

My hard working professional daughters name is Becky, that's her name on her birth certificate, she's never been thought of as chavvy or having a silly name. Just go with what you prefer 😊

SlightlygrumpyBettyswaitress · 30/09/2023 09:17

I think you can be both tbh.
Rebecca when client facing. So on correspondence etc. Friendly colleagues shorten it to Becky.
You are probably a generation (or2) younger than me but it is pretty common with the Elizabeth's (Liz), Christina's (Tina) I know/have worked with.

Fushia123 · 30/09/2023 09:18

My DD21 is Bec or Becca to me. Her dad still calls her Rebecca. We have never used Becky. I love her name - named partly after a girl in my class who was kind and cheerful and good fun and clever!

beckyorno · 30/09/2023 09:19

My name is Rebecca but I've been Becky for pretty much my whole life. I don't even really identify with the name Rebecca at all, if that doesn't sound too wanky!

But I'm in my 40s now and I do feel like Becky is a bit of a young name, like the sort of think a cheerleader would be called of something. It's not very formal and maybe a bit chavvy? I wish I was called Becca instead but it's too late now I think.

You've got to got with what you are more comfortable with, people often think I don't like being called Rebecca or don't like the name, but that's not it, it's just that that name doesn't feel like 'me' and Becky does. Despite the fact that Becky feels a bit juvenile as I get older...

I guess this is a cautionary tale for those people naming their kids even more cutesy names when they are young because when you get older you can feel a bit silly.

Dumbles · 30/09/2023 09:22

I’ve had a similar name crisis OP after I heard someone with the same name as me say the shortened version is a bit ‘childish’ but the reality is most girls names are so normal people won’t think twice.

So many names (shortened or not) have that sound:
Becky, Ellie, Katie, Jenny, Holly, Zoe, Ruby, Lilly, Lucy etc

The more you worry about it the weirder it feels but I think Becky is a lovely name. I would have your formal email signature as the longer version but sign off with Bex or Becky depending on how you feel that day.
