To think this, is how the Tories could win?

Sunak is setting out his stall as pro-car:

www.theguardian.com/politics/2023/sep/28/rishi-sunak-expected-to-limit-powers-of-councils-in-england-to-curb-car-use-20mph-speed-limit-traffic-camera-fines

This could actually swing it for him. People sink vast amounts of time and money into their cars, they're aspirational status symbols. The UK loves it's cars.

@ Clavinova I’d like your thoughts

I'm not keen on the Rwanda policy, but I have no problems with housing (adult male) asylum seekers on the barge - providing it's passes health and safety of course. The standard of accommodation looked visually fine to me.

Looked visually fine to you

You got that wong then.

Would you like a barge like that in your town?

As for money on processing faster, whatever makes things easier increases numbers, there really isn’t a limit in that way

Do you know if there's any stats on this?

Because all we've seen the past few years is that slower processing has increased numbers.

The numbers were lower when they processed claims quicker.

I accept there will be some correlation between more people equalling slower claims but I can't find anything proving faster claims increases number crossing?

As far as this being 3rd ruling. It says so much. Judge 1 - nope. Can't do that human rights. Judge 2. Nope you've been told before about human rights and you've presented nothing to show a point in law or evidence that makes that decision wrong.

3rd ruling will be even harder based on the literature from first 2.

Numbers are going up each year not just to here

Look at the Med and Lampedusa

There is no reason making it easier once here would decrease crossings, why would it?

Ruling one was yes btw but then appealed. At this point one judge is a no, but rest have been yes

On 19 December 2022, the High Court ruled in the case of AAA and others v Secretary of State for the Home Department that the government’s plan to deport migrants to Rwanda is lawful.

Labour are counting on those who don't know.

Is that a really bad attempt at a play on word? Labour are counting on what, those that don’t know the government strategy is frankly a load of bolx- sorry to break it to you but reality is on their side- these ideas will achieve nothing. Zero.

Huge costs have gone into the failed Rwanda scheme, barges or any other nonsense put forward by your party, clav. Huge costs that achieve nothing. The country now see through it as the failure that it is.

Exactly. Huge costs have gone into this and we've gained nothing.

We've a backlog that still needs funding to sort out.

We are paying to house people who could and want to work and pay into the system.

None of it makes sense other than to the Tory donors who are benefitting from their schemes and the few right wing Tory's who's vote they will keep.

Sadly though this has become another black/white partisan headline discussion.

If you don't agree with Rwanda scheme you want unlimited immigration and are a lefty. No one's allowed to be concerned about the spending not achieving anything and agreeing we need to do something to stop this smuggling trade.

I also had no issue with the barge if it was suitable, safe, provided a human rights standard of living and provided education and training etc.

I have a MASSIVE issue with over crowding, lack of fire safety, legionnaires and the fact we are finding the barge, the necessary fixes AND alternative accommodation.

In summary - I have a massive issue with them wasting my taxes on headline vote attempt winners that persecute desperate people and achieve NOTHING.

You can't really compare Australia, a country surrounded by water, with the UK.

I think we might have some water.

Notonthestairs · 30/09/2023 21:35

I have been repeatedly told on MN that Australia's policies hold the solution. Funnily enough they never mention the pushbacks - they only focus on the off shore processing.
I am well aware that push backs are not practical or advisable in the Channel.

itsgettingweird · 30/09/2023 21:36

Notonthestairs · 30/09/2023 21:27

Checking in with your regular reminder that in Australia the numbers of asylum seekers increased after off shore processing began.

Thanks for this. That's the sort of information we need the public to see.

Headlines and wasting tax payers money don't stop smugglers and people traffickers.

Treating people seeking asylum from persecution as people and processing claims humanly stops them AND provides a working population paying into the country.

Lonelycrab · 30/09/2023 21:36

How do you stop people?

As U.K. seems to be a more emotive issue how would you deal with Lampedusa and 7000 in 24 hours

What would you do if that continued and increased?

I mean people can say we’ll accommodate everyone coming but do you get to a point where you think there may be strain?

The Tories will get in next election. I know the assumption is that they won’t but they are the only party prepared to say what a whole swathe of people think but daren’t say.

Elections are won and lost on the economy, not by manufactured culture wars.

People vote with their wallets.

WhileMyDishwasherGentlyWeeps · 29/09/2023 16:48

I know someone done for 23mph.

This is a futile argument, anyway, because you don’t want to accept that straying 10% (I know it’s a guideline, not the law) over a lower threshold is easier to do than a proportional excess at higher speeds. To everyone else it’s blindingly obvious.

I don't accept it because it's utter nonsense.

Fightyouforthatpie · 30/09/2023 21:43

derxa · 30/09/2023 15:34

Ditto

You must be driving really crap cars if they have an auto that can't cope with 20mph.

No, I wouldn't - but then I wouldn't want to live near an asylum hotel, next door to a group of Eastern European factory workers, or a British builder with lots of tattoos either. I'm a self-confessed snob and NIMBY.

Notonthestairs · 30/09/2023 21:46

"I mean people can say we’ll accommodate everyone coming but do you get to a point where you think there may be strain?"

So frustrating. Nobody is suggesting this. Just asking for cost effective, practical workable policies.

No I won't name numbers - I know that's a Tory voters knee jerk question to divert attention.

We pay - we've paid for 13 years - the Government to acknowledge reality & come up with sensible solutions. They should be taking advice and providing practical solutions, not sops to placate their base.

itsgettingweird · 30/09/2023 21:47

Eastern** you can process claims before the need to risk life. If people didn't need to cross the channel to claim asylum there would be no business selling this option.

I don't claim to have a simple solution or all the answers.

But I'll never agree wasting tax payers money achieving nothing but more asylum seekers is a workable policy when it achieves the absolute opposite of stopping the boats.

Do you have any stats on success rates for refugees getting in to work? What percentage have full-time jobs after 2 years? 5 years?

Nope Volvo XC 60 It's not that the car can't do it it's that you have to focus on sticking to 20 mp h and not drop to 15 mph which is too slow and pisses other drivers. We've got lots of Twenty is Plenty zones here in Scotland. I'd be really annoyed if I got fined for going at 22 mph. We're in the country and the problem isn't people like me. It's young men driving at 80 round bends and over turning and crashing. Twats like Drakeford will never stop that.

Nope. Three month old Toyota Corolla hybrid. It’s nothing to do with the car being crap and everything to do with the way the gearbox is set.

No I don't.

But considering much of the Tory parties campaigning in th roast has been about forinors nicking jobs from the British I'm assuming it must be quite high?

Unless of course they were lying again for headlines Wink
