Sycamore Gap - tree has been felled!

Looks like someone has deliberately felled the famous tree in Sycamore Gap. I can’t believe anyone would do such a thing. I don’t normally get emotional but this has really upset me. It’s absolutely irreplaceable.

Absolute bastards!!

I bet it's for TikTok or insta fame.

I hope they get caught

I couldn’t get worked up about this. It’s just a tree 🤷‍♀️

Not to those of us who live near it.

So what is meaningful to you? Or are you just stirring?

TempyBrennan · 28/09/2023 13:04

Whoever did it has clearly planned to do it in stormy weather so it would look less suspicious going over in the night.

never thought I’d feel sad for a tree! Iconic of our beautiful area.

Lots of things are meaningful to me. Trees are not.

Just stirring - it’s clearly not ‘just a tree’

Awful.

I’m really upset about this. It’s iconic and so many come to the area to see it.

It’s so utterly pointless. I hope whoever has done it knows how hated they are.

As long as you’re alright, Jack.

What was the point of posting. Prat.

smallshinybutton · 28/09/2023 13:09

I think this should be punished with a jail sentence

Bacarach · 28/09/2023 13:09

Its happened to thousands of trees all across the country to make room for HS2, we have lost 108 ancient woodlands including the beloved Cubbington Pear which was in Cubbington Woods in Warwickshire. The land has been decimated, I think any tree cut down is awful.

ArseMenagerie · 28/09/2023 13:10

Heartbreaking

MrsR2018 · 28/09/2023 13:11

I’m local and absolutely devastated. We all are. What a loss 💔💔💔

Like what? Curious about what sorts of things are meaningful to someone who would come onto a thread like this and make that sort of comment.

Was it a man?

Genuinely devastated by this!

smallshinybutton · 28/09/2023 12:57

Who would want it?

God loads of people I imagine!

Anyone who's a massive fan of Robin Hood, film memorabilia places/websites who might turn the wood into a pen or a carving.

People who want a significant tree as wooden slices at their event.

Someone who doesn't live locally but the tree has meaning to them.

People will buy just about anything especially something as rare as this.

Myotis · 28/09/2023 13:13

Me too, just down the road and absolutely gutted.

DeeCee77 · 28/09/2023 13:14

Finding it hard what to say.

A killer (of someone innocent)/rapist/paedo, you call them a monster etc. Someone who steals something, you call them a thief (some poor starving individual nicking a loaf excepted). To destroy a cherished tree?...this kind of twisted, spiteful character I've not come across. Can't wrap my brain around it nor do I want to.

Exceptionally dumb comment.

It will absolutely decimate the tourist industry in the area as well. It’s one of the focal points for walks along that route and is known the world over.

CatamaranViper · 28/09/2023 13:17

I hope it's an admin error rather than some rouge tree surgeon vigilante.

Northumberlandlass · 28/09/2023 13:17

I’m local to the area.
It was an iconic Northumberland view/landmark. It’s a very sad day.

Everyone is in disbelief. Everyone is angry.

It might “just” be a tree but is the place I took my son for adventures when he was little, where my ex husband & I went to walk when his Dad was dying & we needed peace. Where I took my DP for a walk when we first met.

Saw this on twitter & it captures some beautiful images.

I read this earlier and just felt so sad. 😞 I'd never heard of the tree before, I have to be honest, but was just sickened by it. It's the worst kind of vandalism. It is just irreplaceable and such a loss. Why are people so awful.

I hope the tourists keep coming to see 'the stump' and hopefully see the tree regrowing and tracking progress.

I'm still going to keep going!
