Sycamore Gap - tree has been felled!

Looks like someone has deliberately felled the famous tree in Sycamore Gap. I can’t believe anyone would do such a thing. I don’t normally get emotional but this has really upset me. It’s absolutely irreplaceable.

@User19537876 they wouldn’t professionally fell it intact like that. They’d need to make it safe first so getting rid of the smaller branches, then the main ones, so it’s basically just the trunk left to fell. Some douche has just gone at this very recklessly with a chainsaw.

Trophy!
It'll be worth loads, especially now.
This was my claim up the thread and I stand by it

fair points, mines ufo related or historical artifacts in the trunk

On my local North East news, from the border of Northumberland, they aged it as being between 160 and 300. Nevertheless, it was a spiritual place for many people. Something that should be mentioned is the financial impact on the North East and Northumberland. Walkers put revenue into our economy with pubs, hotels etc.. let's face it, we need that revenue as we get sod all from government. My daughter told me a local farmer was pissed off with walkers parking on his land, don't know how true this is... maybe a son took it into his own hands.. regardless, it was a spiritual, very special place and if anyone thinks differently please scroll by my post.

Agreed; trees are beautiful, magical, spiritual, and integral to the eco system. No trees - no life.

It would take serious equipment to move a trunk that size and scale though. It would weigh so much, even multiple men couldn’t lift it without serious machinery,

something is missing from this story that’s not been said. This was no 16 year old on a quad bike with a chain saw. Someone has taken a jcb up there.

MissMillyFluff · 28/09/2023 22:07

People who are joking obviously aren't from the area. Absolute fuckwits.

Maybe UFO/historic trophy?.

This is why I dont believe it was a lone 16 year old!

I hope whoever did this is named and shamed, regardless of how old they are.

Maybe once they're actually found guilty... let's not lynch the first person the police have pointed the finger at just yet!

Shraree · 28/09/2023 22:15

It's a small community here in Northumberland. His name might not be printed in the paper but it won't be long before everyone knows who did it.

Well you never mentioned the trunk was missing, 😂 that’s a huge thing, and does in fact mean it absolutely cannot be a lone lad. Doesn’t mean he wasn’t part of it.

and no way an experienced arborist in the area won’t have spotted the trunk was missing, it was in the wrong position and the cuts were different. So the police know this.

UnctuousUnicorns · 28/09/2023 22:22

I thought that was the trunk and crown lying over the wall in the news pics?

MissMillyFluff · 28/09/2023 22:27

As someone on the border of Northumberland, yes, it'll come out x

My DH is all for putting him in the stocks.

Someone on Instagram suggested flogging and I was all for it. I think upon reflection the stocks would be good. We could all bring some rotting vegetables. I'm quite happy to let some vegetables rot just for this purpose

Spodey · 28/09/2023 22:33

Someone needs to set up a Just Giving or something. So local people can donate for a replacement landmark to be erected.

@GoodOldEmmaNess @Seadragonusgiganticusmaximus

Just fuck off, you have no idea how much this means to us.

Flumpaphone · 28/09/2023 22:42

This is the tree of marriage proposals, of family picnics, of ashes being scattered, of a hundred thousand photos of generations growing up.

It's a tree that symbolises the beauty of our region, gives us something to be proud of, gives us an identity.

So piss off with your feeble "wood" jokes, your so pathetic tree puns, you think your so fucking hilarious.

Save your ire for the toerag who committed this appalling act of wanton destruction, can't you. Most people on this thread are horrified by it, including myself. I just find it difficult to resist a dreadful pun, so yeah, guilty as charged. 👐

This is devastating
I’m feeling pretty murderous about the whole thing
I have not enjoyed any of the puns upthread, they just made me sad and cross and this is UNHEARD of for me

Totally agree. Why anyone thinks it's appropriate to make stupid puns about this is beyond me.

Well then I imagine he will be moving. Bastard
