Sycamore Gap - tree has been felled!

Looks like someone has deliberately felled the famous tree in Sycamore Gap. I can’t believe anyone would do such a thing. I don’t normally get emotional but this has really upset me. It’s absolutely irreplaceable.

Yeah, I wonder what arsehole suggested that to them. I submitted a suggested edit to restore the title.

Have you not seen the reviews? I posted them earlier 😒

It was a daft and destructive thing to do, but the only reason this tree was 'iconic' was a combo of a movie and some selfie opportunities. It wasn't of any special worth environmentally. I hope there is some thoughtful replanting and a constructive community service order for the lad.

Tell me you're not from the North East without telling me you're not from the North East.

It was iconic because it's a lone tree - as such surely it was an important part of its local ecosystem.

What's more important? A tree or a kid? I know the majority of you think a tree and that is depressing.

I don't anyone here is advocating executiion. 🤷‍♀️

What a stupid, pointless question. It's not a case of either or. I've spent my 27 year career caring about and helping kids. Oh dear - does that mean I'm not allowed to care about trees? Hmm Even if you were daft enough to think that, are you seriously suggesting that, given the choice of saving a tree or a child, 'the majority of us' would save the tree? Honestly, there are some ridiculous posts on this thread.

ErrolTheDragon · 28/09/2023 19:27

or they are long term looking at developing the area and knew the tree would be an pickle, so here and now dispatch tree

Seriously? You do know where this is?Confused

these days does that stop development of any kind ?

This is true. You would have thought Hadrian’s Wall would be safe but look at what’s going on with Stonehenge!

A UNESCO world heritage site on National Trust land in a National Park? Er, yeah.

DeeCee77 · 28/09/2023 19:32

Can the tree be salvaged?

My dad just mentioned it can if the roots aren't affected. I was surprised he said this as it thought it was kaput (hope to God it can be).

Jurisprudense · 28/09/2023 19:35

Janieforever · 28/09/2023 18:41

Not necessarily. You just cut a wedge out in the direction you wish it to fall. Then cut it from the other side. I very much doubt anyone went up there with that equipment. Easily down without. Very easily. This wasn’t a professional.

I suspect you've never felled a tree of that size.

HotChocolateAlbum · 28/09/2023 19:48

a constructive community service order for the lad.
😂😂😂

SoShallINever · 28/09/2023 19:48

I absolutely can't believe this, we are going to see Hadrian's wall next week. Such a bloody shame.

then a few discussions a few we will fund x,y,z etc ? how often has it been debatable for certain sites in the past etc ?

I don’t know its height, but we have taken down two mature sycamores You don’t need to believe a 16 year old could do it. Email the local police and tell them you think they’ve the wrong person.

Fedupofballs · 28/09/2023 19:49

It was a symbol of so many things - nature, history, joy, consistency. When everything is changing so rapidly and there is so much negativity a lot can be said for a place which is truly calming, positive and grew from a tiny seed.
To those who say it is just a tree, what it represents to many people was so much more, and this has been callously destroyed.

akindredspirit · 28/09/2023 19:57

@downtherivers It is alongside Hadrian's Wall and is regularly walked. The land is owned by The National Trust. I dont think any farmers are affected by visitors. It is somewhere that people visit for many reasons.......to photograph, to meditate, for peace and traquillity, the dark skies (fabulous for star gazing and the Aurora Borealis) As a local, I am devastated. A 16 year old boy has been arrested

Dunnoburt · 28/09/2023 20:04

I'm so pissed off at the little cunt/s that has/ve done this....... how old was that tree??? Just absolutely disgusting.

IAmTheGibby · 28/09/2023 20:04

Why would anybody do such a thing? Such a beautiful tree 😢

They must have needed a chain saw. This was clearly premeditated.

The ignorance demonstrated by some posters on here about the north of England is astounding.

There is plenty of land that isn't on a UNESCO site of someone was desperate to develop - but there is no demand. At a push someone might have thought of building the other side of the road looking at the wall but really this is not the work of developers.
The farm my grandfather grow up on a few miles from sycamore gap. It and it's neighbours are now empty because no one wants to live there. Who wants to be miles from anywhere without mains electricity, water etc. Snowed in for weeks at a time most winters.

it depends on how far ahead they are thinking with the plans, especially if its eg 10, 20 years etc from now

Frequency · 28/09/2023 20:12

There'd be absolute carnage if anyone tried to develop that land. It wouldn't get past planning as pretty much everyone locally would object.

Mountaineer0009 · 28/09/2023 20:12

is their evidence of it being cut ? could a ufo, knocked it over ?
