DH and I are invited to a black tie event. It's a military dinner (but we are both civilians) and there will be a senior member of the Royal Family there.

Dress code is uniforms for the officers, and black tie for civilian men. Civilian women are to wear long evening attire, or black tie equivalent.

This is the best dress I own. Will it do? I wasn't worried about it until I found out there would be royalty there, and now I'm worried it's not dressy enough. Help!

Blimey, I wasn't being mean to the OP! Nor did I mean to derail the thread. I hadn't anticipated anyone would respond to my post tbh. Just deeply dislike people simpering over the mention of royalty. The fact that the King is the head of the armed forces is ridiculous. It's time the links between the royals and our country's armed services are severed.

Agreed. And people are allowed to express opinions you know?!

WhitewitchYorkshire · 15/10/2023 15:18

I doubt that you’ll be thrown out by the black tie police…! My feeling is that if you feel good in what you’re wearing then it will look good. The main thing is to feel confident in yourself..hair done, nice shoes etc..

MasterBeth · 15/10/2023 15:22

Can't stand the forelock tugging on this thread. "Senior royal"!! Get tae fuck. Princess Anne doesn't determine what clothes you should wear. Get some dignity!

Ifeelsuchafool · 15/10/2023 19:43

Black tie means cocktail length. I wouldn't go floor length unless it were white tie. It's a lovely dress. 😊

VeraMay · 15/10/2023 21:28

The dress is lovely, however, long dress is most likely more appropriate. You may find you are the only one not in a long dress. The last military ball I went to every civilian lady was attired in a long dress. Can you borrow one from a friend? I used to borrow and lend dresses for such occasions.

Redburnett · 15/10/2023 21:31

No, that dress is not appropriate for a very formal event.

LilyPAnderson · 19/10/2023 00:19

I thought Catherine is trying to be more relatable and wears a lot of High Street fashion now? That dress will probably be seen as extravagant. Although if the invitation says long evening wear, it should be longer.

LilyPAnderson · 19/10/2023 00:32

Only wear what you can afford though, as don't go out of pocket for a member of a stuck up family who give their distant relatives and their spouses free mansions, while many can't afford to heat their homes.
I expect the royalty will be too busy thinking of themselves than worrying about what others are wearing, if you're worried about them.
I often buy 2nd hand clothes online such as e bay, if you want to be thrifty.

LilyPAnderson · 19/10/2023 00:40

>>You're so right! My dad always used to attend mess dinners dressed exactly as he pleased - lederhosen (without a shirt), flip-flops and a sombrero. As he said, rules were for women. <<<

Ha ha That's hilarious. Thanks for the laugh.
