To have money left over at the end of the month?

hopeitneverends · 26/09/2023 20:48

Today I bought two coffees from Starbucks for me and my colleague/friend.

Another colleague remarked “two coffees before payday?” It cost me £7. Aibu to think it’s a weird remark?

Overthinking it a bit.

Legomania · 26/09/2023 20:49

It can't be news to you that some people are struggling? But sounds like they have some chip on their shoulder about relative salaries.

Just a tad. Are you always so literal OP?

CurlsandCurves · 26/09/2023 20:53

Sounds like the person might have been having a bit of banter with you to me.

If it was my workplace and someone said that I’d respond with ‘I know! Totally loaded, me!’ Or something similar.

Definitely overthinking this one I reckon, OP.

Hellocatshome · 26/09/2023 20:57

Wow well done you have money at the end of the month. Some people don't this cant be a suprise to you.

Cowlover89 · 26/09/2023 20:59

Definitely overthinking it

NeverDropYourMooncup · 26/09/2023 21:01

Money for Starbucks two days before payday? You're living the dream.

They aren’t the bantering type.

I wouldn’t say it’s a weird remark, no. Lots of us get to week 3 and have no money left for treats

ThreePointOneFourOneFiveNine · 26/09/2023 21:11

Personally I think your colleague is being a bit judgy and not very nice. Yes lots of people are struggling, but that's not an excuse to make comments on how other people spend their money. If it's a good friend having a joke that's different, but you've said it's not so really it's just plain rude.

FuckingHellAdele · 26/09/2023 21:15

Could be a throwaway remark.

I don't want to sound like a dick (sorry) but no one I work with is not well paid and we still will mention that it's 'pay day!' or 'pay day tomorrow!'. It's just a thing.

WillowCraft · 26/09/2023 21:16

I think it's a strange remark. Not everyone manages their finances by spending it all on luxuries at the beginning of the month leaving nothing for the end.

Ashleysaidwhat · 26/09/2023 21:16

@ThreePointOneFourOneFiveNine I don't get why her colleagues are judging. My colleagues had the similar conversation on Monday about getting a Starbucks as we both joked that we both had to stay in this weekend as are broke. No judgement just a laugh between us.

Yup we are always excited for pay day in our office

But either you can afford treats or you can't. Buying all the treats at the beginning of the month is a choice, not a sign of poverty. Buying treats at the beginning of the month and having no money by week 3 just suggests you're living out with your means.

Notthisagainpart2 · 26/09/2023 21:20

I think a lot of people do run out of money for non-essential us before pay day

ThreePointOneFourOneFiveNine · 26/09/2023 21:21

Maybe I've just been out of an office environment for too long. It wouldn't occur to me to make a comment like that.

LegendsBeyond · 26/09/2023 21:25

That is a weird comment. I wouldn’t dream of saying it. It’s hardly unusual to have £7 left for some coffees at the end of the month. Most of us don’t blow our wages straight after pay day.

pontipinemum · 26/09/2023 21:31

These days I have money left at the end of the month. 8 years ago I could be down to a few quid before pay day. Hard to know what they meant by it. I would have complained at the time, but everyone I worked with was in a similar boat

Zoreos · 26/09/2023 21:45

Next time I’d say “Actually it’ll only be £3.50 before payday because you can pay for your own you snarky bitch”. But that’s me and I wouldn’t appreciate or tolerate passive aggressive digs because you’re slightly more fortunate than others. So unnecessary. Only the church appreciates Martyr.

Edit: I just realise I’ve totally misread the context in this was written and it wasn’t the colleague you bought the coffee for which is why I thought it was super weird but my underlying sentiment still stands. The comment is judgy and off.

thecatsthecats · 26/09/2023 22:03

Eh, I get it. Even from my incredibly piddling starting salary, I have not once especially needed it to be payday. All the big bills out at the beginning and don't particularly worry about spending the rest.

But then I don't think that's normal tbh.

melodypondisasuperhero · 26/09/2023 22:06

Towards the end of the month is pretty much the only time I’m happy to splurge! At the beginning yeah I have a lot more money but it’s got a long time to last so I’m more cautious, once I get to the “home stretch” I can relax a bit.

MasterBeth · 26/09/2023 22:06

Weird?

No.

OhcantthInkofaname · 26/09/2023 22:09

Just tell this person next time: I budget well.

I agree. There's something about coffee shops that makes people stick their noses in the air. Like it's the ultimate frivolity. I stop off for a chai latte a couple of times a month before work and I get "I bet you didn't get much change from a fiver for that." No, but I can't make them myself and it's a nice start to the day.
