To have money left over at the end of the month?

hopeitneverends · 26/09/2023 20:48

Today I bought two coffees from Starbucks for me and my colleague/friend.

Another colleague remarked “two coffees before payday?” It cost me £7. Aibu to think it’s a weird remark?

I agree. There's something about coffee shops that makes people stick their noses in the air. Like it's the ultimate frivolity. I stop off for a chai latte a couple of times a month before work and I get "I bet you didn't get much change from a fiver for that." No, but I can't make them myself and it's a nice start to the day.

You can make a chai latte yourself. I had a friend with a tea shop who would make amazing ones and now all the coffeeshop ones are disappointing. I asked for one at markies and they put a chai tea bag in a latte. Hugely disappointed. Anyway chai tea (leaves) plus sugar in a little teapot, couple of shots of espresso and warm milk. It's really lovely.

have you been stewing over this all day, OP?

What’s the point of comments like this? It adds nothing to the thread at all either way.

I’d rather “stew” on this all day then be the type of person that leaves comments on the internet in order to feel superior. I’m choosing to be embarrassed for you by your pedantic behaviour:

It is not a comment that requires analysing by you or anyone else.

And yet here you are taking time out of your day to comment ..

To tell you to stop overthinking it.

I wouldn’t say it’s a weird remark, no. Lots of us get to week 3 and have no money left for treats

But it isn't the OPs fault she has money left at the end of the month and her colleague doesn't. People have different circumstances.

What they said is as rude as if the OP asked why he couldn't afford it.

theysaiditgetseasier · 27/09/2023 00:24

I'd take it as a compliment and offer to treat them to a coffee

Peaceandquietfinally · 27/09/2023 00:27

I always appear at work with an iced latte. My colleagues always laugh because I leave the cup somewhere and they find it ! They joke that they new I must be in the building! Have never given it any thought TBH !

ooof a little touchy there, OP. It's all becoming clear.

Let me go stew on this.

I’ve never understood this mentality. Spending freely at payday and then having no money at the end isn’t a wise budgeting method. Budgeting works best on an annual basis. The timing of a treat should never matter because you can either afford it or you can’t.

AlwaysPrettyOnTheInside · 27/09/2023 01:04

I thought I was doing well to still have 14.something left, 2 days before payday, after the month I've had.

I wouldn't be spending it on coffee though 😂

I'm thinking of spending it on a rare takeaway on Friday night, as it will effectively be free money then. But I'm sure I'll work my budget out and it won't be spare, as I've got more car repairs again and an mot retest now 😭

Most people aren't spending freely, currently. They are paying their bills and being left with nothing.

Willmafrockfit · 27/09/2023 06:17

i bet they wouldnt have refused a coffee

No. Most prople don't have nothing left. I believe last numbers were 60% saves something most if not every month. OP having something at the end of the month is not unusual

AlwaysPrettyOnTheInside · 27/09/2023 06:35

I knew that would have to be explained to the literal nth degree.

"Most people that have nothing left at the end of the month arent spending freely...

jonesysy · 27/09/2023 06:38

Among those not living hand to mouth are two camps, those that spend their disposable money before payday and those that don't. The two camps don't really understand each other and its probably best for both to ignore any comments about payday or what you can afford by those in the other camp as it will sound alien

That's no explanation, that's completely different sentence. Even with the context of the post it was answering

givemeasunnyday · 27/09/2023 06:44

Totally off the point, but how on earth do you all manage on monthly pay? It's not common in my country and I would hate it.

We budget. Most bills etc are scheduled to be taken by DD on or in the few days after pay day. Then you just budget if you know you have 4 lots of school dinner money to pay, 4 weekly shops etc you just plan and budget accordingly.

I try to make sure all my bills are paid or debited at the start of the month.

Any that aren't, the money is allocated and not touched. This includes anything at all that needs to be paid for that month.

Then, any money left over is divided by 4 or 5 weeks and that is the amount I have to live off each week, for shopping, going out, spending, and I don't go over that amount.

It's a habit. I was on monthly then biweekly then monthly, and at the end of the day, it's the same amount of money coming in in a month so you know how much you can spend and when your bills are paid etc.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 27/09/2023 07:17

Here's a good example of privilege.

Group 1 knows what it's like to not have spare cash or credit in the last week (or three weeks) of the month because their low wages were swallowed up by rent, bills, bus fare and suchlike. They can joke about it because through the painful memories of hoping their card doesn't get declined at sainsburys, being annoyed a direct debit was taken before instead of on the date, nicking toilet roll from work or panicking because the bank has closed their account without notice and their wages are floating around somewhere inaccessible, there's the acceptance that low wages and high bills was normal life.

Group 2 can't comprehend this and think it's due to buying crap and not budgeting.

Defiantjazz · 27/09/2023 07:20

It’s only coffee, hardly a “treat”. I buy one pretty much every day. Am I being extravagant?

Defiantjazz · 27/09/2023 07:34

yes,as@EddieHowesShithousingMagsstates it is a joke.

Could be a joke or could be a dig. We can’t tell either way and OP seems to think it was the latter.

Scaredycatttt · 27/09/2023 07:56

As someone who regularly runs out of money in the middle of the month, no I don't thinks it's a strange comment. I'd assume it was a joke.

Saverage · 27/09/2023 07:56

Yes it was weird and quite rude, given you are sure it was not a joke. It's not his place to speculate on your finances.
