Young people vaping

Seriously, why even bother? I suspect peer pressure maybe but the attraction is lost on me. I'm travelling to work and I use a busy transport interchange with buses and trains and there are lots of young people going to college and maybe school. So many of them vaping.

Because it is highly addictive, relatively cheap and easily available

Dolores87 · 26/09/2023 08:31

Because when you are 16 you think it's cool and then before you know it you are addicted. It's just the new smoking.

Allofthisisasimulation · 26/09/2023 08:32

I don't get why people want to pay to look stupid, and potentially harm themselves - I never have tbh.

CherryCokeFanatic · 26/09/2023 08:33

They look really cool with all the different shapes and colours the brands use and they taste like a sweet and give you a little head buzz and don’t make you stink, yellow your teeth or hack and cough like cigarettes do

Their friends don't think they look stupid and teenagers don't care what us older people think.

Hellocatshome · 26/09/2023 08:40

Because their friends are doing it it makes them look cool to their peers and its addictive. Also adults don't help we were in a pub at the weekend and a mum but her shiny brightly coloured strawberry smelling vape on the table where her approx 10 year old son picked it up and began playing with it and pretending to vape and she just watched and said nothing.

Luckily my 16 year old DS has managed to quit vaping after his medical for his apprenticeship said he had the lung age of a 26 year old!

They need to be heavily regulated, sold in plain packaging and flavourless. Better still only available on prescription for those trying to stop smoking.

^^ this

As a method to help smokers cut down their nicotine intake or quit altogether it has it's place if done properly and is researched. To take it up cold is as nuts IMO as taking up smoking. But like Dolores said teenagers think it looks cool. There is also growing concern that their marketing is being targeted at teenager non-smokers rather than smokers trying to quit

Brrrrrrrrrrrr · 26/09/2023 08:54

It’s depressing to see so many young people doing this, they think they look cool when they’re actually showing themselves to be weak characters giving in to addiction.

Even more depressing though are those under 30 who actually smoke, how the F is this a thing in 2023. The damage to the body is proven time and again to be catastrophic, it absolutely stinks, your mouth tastes like a sewer and the cost is a black hole plus it’s banned more or less everywhere except the home and outside.

SnapdragonToadflax · 26/09/2023 08:54

The same reason we all smoked in our teens in the 90s - they think it looks cool, it's rebellious, their mates do it, it's good to have something to do with your hands, and with the added bonus of it not making you smell horrible so you don't have to douse yourself in Impulse before you get home. Plus they're actually marketed at young people.

I sincerely believe they should be banned, except as a stopping smoking aid on prescription.

Mrsjayy · 26/09/2023 08:57

It's the new smoking just blueberry flavoured! Cigarettes were easy to buy when I was a teenager times have not changed despite the smoking/vaping age going up.

Then it would surely make sense for them to be packaged the same way cigarettes are. Made to look really UNcool.

Did you miss the 'I never have' - that includes when I was younger, more in relation to smoking but same idea. I also know lots of teens who think vapers look ridiculous!

I didn't smoke in my teens (80's/90s), and I'd say less than 10% of my friends did. If you include when folk were also drinking alcohol then the 10% went up to around 20% (but they regretted it next day!).

Yes, I did miss that.

A lot of teenagers and young adults experiment with different things though. I don't smoke or vape but when I was younger I smoked a bit.

If you don't understand this then you've lived under a rock.

My teenager is too tight to vape. He's way better at saving than I was at his age.

You are suggesting someone has lived under a rock because they didn't experience life as you did? Perhaps you were just living under a different rock. ;)

I'm not going to get into an argument, it's far too early.

I did go clubbing a lot so yes I probably did live under a different rock.

Slothmoth · 26/09/2023 09:23

Because many of the vapes are marketed towards young people- bright colours in appealing flavours and all over social media. Then of course you have peer pressure, smoking is seen by a lot of younger people as gross and uncool now, but vaping, even though we don't know the long term dangers but has already been shown to cause lung issues etc, is seen as cool. I do think some are ignorant to the fact that these are harmful, they're nicely packaged up and a smoking cessation aid at the start I think the messaging around less harmful than cigarettes hasn't been interpreted by some in the way intended; it might be better than smoking nicotine but plenty of teens who vape wouldn't have taken up smoking so it's causing new issues.

Mrsjayy · 26/09/2023 09:26

The single use vapes are being banned aren't they? Those are the ones the kids all use hopefully the trend will fade out.

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 26/09/2023 09:31

What I think is bizarre is that cigarettes are still hidden behind a curtain in the shops and you have to ask for them, but the vaping stuff is fully on display and easily accessible. Bonkers. The vape stuff should also be put behind a screen.

Findyourneutralspace · 26/09/2023 09:34

It’s so addictive. I switched to vaping on the advice of the Quit Smoking service and while I haven’t smoked in two years but I’m way more addicted to the vape than I ever was cigs.
I plan to try and get off them by switching to 0% ones but I read a report the other day that said loads of them are full of nicotine too.

My friends vape like a steam train the machine is massive and we stopped smoking cigarettes at the same time they are still vaping years later.

I went clubbing lots too.

(If you didn't want to start an argument best not make accusations about peoole living under rocks).

Quite. Never had the slightest desire to smoke.

Well they might think you look stupid. I don't even vape myself either and I've have had to stop people vaping in certain areas of our workplace but I don't call them stupid.
