To say they can’t visit with their dog?

We live 4hrs from my parents. We have two primary aged children. We hardly see them anyway but they’ve recently got a puppy. A bouncy thing. We have an old and very nervous cat, who hides most days under the bed when we have visitors.

We have visited them since puppy arrived. DM has asked if they can visit us and bring puppy. I’ve said no it’s not fair on our cat. As far as I see it, it was their choice to get a dog not ours. They should get a pet sitter so they can visit. They’ve never had a dog before and always been cat people, so this is new way of life for them.

🙄or how trivial issues are maximised

I don't really think it's fair to call issues trivial just because they don't feel like issues to you.

I love puppies so would be excited to have one visit, we don't have cats anymore though just dogs.

There is additional back story that I didn’t include, basically my parents are very selfish. Haven’t visited us in a year. We have visited them every school holiday this year. The dog is now an additional obstacle to overcome.

For disability reasons they refuse to meet half way in a park/pub/etc and don’t like hotels or b&bs. So we are restricted to each others houses.

It’s always me instigating contact, they never ask after the DC and so to bend over backwards to accommodate their puppy now seems too much.

Actually with disabilities thrown in I can see why they want you to do more of the driving. Parents get to an age/ state of health where although four hours might be annoying to you to travel, for them it is not feasible to do a return trip in a day. We did virtually all the trips to visit parents because it wasn't feasible for them to do them comfortably.

MeMySonAnd1 · 27/09/2023 07:48

Yep, it comes a time when the children need to be doing all the driving as the parents get older and more frail. Part of life and all that.

Ig they are not that bothered or come to visit so often I don’t know what the problem is. You just visit them when you can. They may just want to show the grandchildren the new puppy, if they are not staying over, the cat I am sure will cope… and you too.
