short n sweet…a friend of mine in Ireland has just had triplets, we were chatting all sorts and in the chat she informed me that in Ireland for triple you get double child benefit per child! That’s a total of 840 a month!…wow! That is amazing. I’m actually in shock! Go Ireland!

Why? Do they cost more per baby just because they're a multiple? Genuine question as that makes zero sense to me!

LoudAndSqueaky · 24/09/2023 10:05

👶🏼👶🏽👶🏻. That interesting. It seems like a good idea.

Iwillpassthanks · 24/09/2023 10:07

*Child Benefit is paid to the child’s mother or step-mother. If the child does not live with their mother or step-mother but lives with their father or step-father*it is this situation in Ireland that i find more odd m
paid to the step mother??!

Whaintheworld · 24/09/2023 10:09

@sparepantsandtoothbrush I have no idea, for twins it 1 and 1/2 times per child so that would be 420 a month. And it’s not means tested…it’s normally 140 per month per child

is she sure?

CasuirDubh · 24/09/2023 10:09

I'm Irish and I never knew this until today. Makes sense though. I can't imagine how expensive triplets would be!

LoudAndSqueaky · 24/09/2023 10:09

I fact checked!

Info HERE
Rate of Child Benefit

Child Benefit is €140 a month for each child. It is paid on the first Tuesday of every month. If you start getting Child Benefit for the first time for a baby, it will be paid at the start of the month after the birth of the child.
For twins, Child Benefit is paid at one-and-a-half times the normal monthly rate for each child. For triplets and other multiple births, Child Benefit is paid at double the normal monthly rate for each child.

Whaintheworld · 24/09/2023 10:10

Triple clothes, nappies, formula, cots, (I don’t know if you’d ever have enough breast milk or capacity for 3!), childcare if needed. I’d say it’s a great idea. I know France used to give a serious wedge if you had a 3rd child, no idea if they still do.

As expensive as one baby but x3 no? I'm struggling to see how this makes sense!

I doubt they cost more so I wonder if this is a kind of covert admission that mothers need to be supported?
Because I imagine the risks and potential cost to maternal health must increase considerably with multiple births.

So good on Ireland.

FastAndLast · 24/09/2023 10:11

Wow never heard that before. Can’t imagine for a minute though having 3 the same age to look after 😴

Marblessolveeverything · 24/09/2023 10:12

Yes child nemesis something we do well. The context is you have to buy three of essential equip etc and don't benefit from passing things down.

Triple buggy etc cost a fortune.

Whaintheworld · 24/09/2023 10:12

I’m imagining childcare is expensive yeah!!

OP posts:
LoudAndSqueaky · 24/09/2023 10:12

With triplets or more there would be additional cost such as having to buy new clothes and prams where you could make do with hand-me-downs etc for a singleton. Triple prams etc would be expensive too. Maybe you would be more in need of extra help like a cleaner.

It seems quite generous though.

Yes but you'd get triple the normal child benefit without doubling it again?!

Whaintheworld · 24/09/2023 10:13

I wonder what childcare subsidies/help they have??

I think child NEMESIS has to be the best Freudian slip I've ever seen! 😂

DysmalRadius · 24/09/2023 10:14

I'd have thought public transport would be out of the question for non-mobile triplets, and most cars wouldn't be able to accommodate three stage 0 car seats, so a new vehicle would probably eat up most of the extra CB for the first couple of years at least.

Whaintheworld · 24/09/2023 10:15

@DysmalRadius yes that’s very true!!

I don't understand why you can't understand this! There are no hand me downs - each child needs a car seat for example at the same time, and 3 cots and 3 highchairs and enough clothes for 3. You'll probably need to buy a new car that fits 3 car seats, you'll definitely need a new buggy. Having 3 children the same age is clearly far more expensive than having 3 singletons.

Child benefit is designed to prevent poverty so it makes sense.

Whaintheworld · 24/09/2023 10:16

They live rurally anyway so a car is necessary although she didn’t mention changing cars at all…I think you could put one in front of necessary? 🤔

OP posts:
Sartre · 24/09/2023 10:16

It makes sense. Triplets must be ridiculously expensive. I’d imagine it’s difficult to BF three babies, it’s hard enough with one so if they FF that’s 3x the formula. 3x the nappies, wipes, clothing, baby equipment like cots, car seats and a triple pram to boot! Must cost a fortune.

Jk987 · 24/09/2023 10:17

I think that triplets are so rare the extra amount is inconsequential. No amount of money would make up for the lack of sleep and hard work with 3 newborns!!

RockAndRollerskate · 24/09/2023 10:18

I was thinking of the car too, some don’t fit three seats in the back row.
can’t even imagine what buggy you’d need!
