short n sweet…a friend of mine in Ireland has just had triplets, we were chatting all sorts and in the chat she informed me that in Ireland for triple you get double child benefit per child! That’s a total of 840 a month!…wow! That is amazing. I’m actually in shock! Go Ireland!

I'm irish and expecting twins - first pregnancy. Its bloody expensive and things are so expensive here. So far we had to buy a new car, double buggy, double everything babies need as all our parents friends are either pregnant or having second baby. My pay check literally leaves the account the same day it arrives.

@Jk987 yea!! It must be so hard, her husband has 3 months off too which is nice (on full pay I may add!!) so that’s a massive help

That's usually private international companies though. In Ireland, paternity leave is unpaid 2 weeks.

Pleaseme · 24/09/2023 16:31

I had twins and tbh that was brutal. They took turns to sleep! I can’t even imagine how you deal with three crying babies at least with twins you have two hands/ breasts. Hardly anyone has triplets so it’s not going to cost the government a fortune. Also you probably need a decent amount of help so it could help pay for that. I had to buy a bigger car too.

The two weeks paternity leave is paid. But if your employer won't top it up you only get paternity benefit.

@Cherrysoup Triple clothes, nappies, formula, cots, (I don’t know if you’d ever have enough breast milk or capacity for 3!), childcare if needed. I’d say it’s a great idea. I know France used to give a serious wedge if you had a 3rd child, no idea if they still do.

Yes of course triple of everything IN TOTAL. One for each of the 3 dc. It's not triple for each of the 3 dc. So why does each of the 3dc get DOUBLE child payment?

ColonelSpondleClagnut · 24/09/2023 18:31

Also, most people who have three children actively chose that to have that number. Careers, finance, housing etc.
Some people expecting triplets would have perhaps only planned to have one child so the others are extra expenses they'd not counted on (and it's not like you can send two back!).

Pleaseme · 26/09/2023 23:20

I feel like Mums of triplets should be given medals just for surviving on a regular basis. Does anyone really believe that an extra 700 euro a month will come anywhere near the cost of raising two extra children by the time you've factored in bigger/ cars/ houses. I'm sure you could have triple bunkbeds in a box room and walk everywhere but that sounds a bit shit tbh.

Triplets are life changing; I'm on a multiples group and we are all very impressed by the triplet mums but careers are fucked, as no one can afford childcare for three babies and it'd be a brave and expensive nanny willing to take that on.

*Child Benefit is paid to the child’s mother or step-mother. If the child does not live with their mother or step-mother but lives with their father or step-father*it is this situation in Ireland that i find more odd m
paid to the step mother??!

Not that surprising, Family Allowances were originally paid to women in England as well.

Edited

You get seven weeks parents leave as well and parents benefit.

Possible health and early birth issues, having to take longer leave or give up work for a while. Alternatively, massive childcare costs.
Triple buggies and other specific equipment ( cars, carseats etc.)
Anyone who hasn't had multiples has no idea.

ChimneyPot · 26/09/2023 23:39

Years ago I read research that households that include a multiple birth are at increased risk of poverty.

I had twins in Ireland. There used to be a lump sum payment at birth, 4th birthday and 12th birthday too but I think that is gone now.

Benefits in Ireland are generally higher than in the UK

Orders76 · 26/09/2023 23:42

And at increased risk of separation chimney pot, a factor of which is finances.

As expensive as one baby but x3 no? I'm struggling to see how this makes sense!

I read that the amount of time it takes for all the feeding, nappy changes and everything else for newborn triplets is approximately 28 hours per day. So some serious help may be needed!

Also in the UK the rate for the first child is higher. This is like 3 first children .

Willa6 · 27/09/2023 00:28

I always imagined that if I was having triplets being a SAHM would be a no brainer for me personally, in terms of far more childcare costs (which would probably be impossible for many people), so I can totally see why this is the case.
