What with his random shite this week about scrapping a non-existent meat tax and an imaginary 7 bins, actually scrapping his own home insulation workforce that was only set up a few months ago, scrapping any useful bits of HS2 and now scrapping A-levels (which is so far removed from what is actually possible in schools right now that it's not even funny), what the fuck is he on?

He's just flailing around madly scrapping everything in case someone, somewhere might vote Tory over it.

And he was supposed to be the sensible replacement to Liz Truss.

Absolute shit show. Bye bye tories. Good riddance.

He is definitely fiddling while Rome burns

I’m absolutely disgusted with Rishi Sunak scrapping all the green targets and therefore scrapping the jobs and investment that would have gone with that.. obviously not to mention not further fucking over the climate for us all and our kids. Shame on him

Scrapping the green targets was the only decent thing that Nan has ever done. All they did was cost ordinary people money and will destroy the economy. So it was some good news for a change.

baroqueandblue · 24/09/2023 00:30

... puts the boot in with a succession of ridiculous, desperate policies. Just to be a cunt.

This should be the official dictionary definition of a Tory.

anotherside · 24/09/2023 01:01

Not a fan of Starmer or his Tory lite policies but he seems a wily operator to me and I reckon he’ll not only comfortably win this election, but another two after that as well. Also helps him that the usual right wing press don’t view him as much as a “threat”. Blair mark 2.

IvorTheEngineDriver · 24/09/2023 01:41

He is stuck between a rock and a hard place. The Tories are in a desparate situation and neither wing of the party has any real idea how to get out of it.

He's getting rid of A Levels?!

Well that's this week's soundbite, but if we've learnt anything from Tory PMs from that damn fool Cameron on it's that what's said this week doesn't necessarily happen.

Liz Truss was the exception and look what happened to her.

Hurrydash · 24/09/2023 01:50

Great job Rishi pushing back new petrol/ diesel car ban to 2035.
It was just another economic nightmare for the poorest in our land, already hit by high inflation.
Great job too scraping the landlord energy targets.
They would have just upped rents - again hitting less well off.. Landlords would have passed on the cost of compliance in increased rents. Or they would have sold up - reducing rental supply therefore increasing prices.
Week done Rishi.
Long way to go to make for lots of other rubbish policies but a good start.

mellongoose · 24/09/2023 06:41

I think he's got time to turn it around. This week's announcement was welcomed by 50% of the population polled, with just 34% against it. The commentary makes it sound like he has scrapped the UK's 2050 net zero commitments. Ridiculous reaction!

People wonder about Starmer, but he has nothing in common with the left wing of the Labour Party. Nothing. He's so desperate for the centre ground he has forgotten what he stands for 🤷‍♀️

algasport · 24/09/2023 06:49

I agree that there's time for Sunak to turn things round and a few policies recently have been welcomed by the press and Tory party.
My biggest dread is a hung parliament with Labour having to compromise with other parties and self id sneaking in through the back door.

BeenThereDoneThat101 · 24/09/2023 06:59

It’s IMO naive to think that they’re going to lose the next election. I’m not convinced they will.

I think there’s more likely to be a low turnout than that voters will vote for labour. So while the conservatives will lose some votes, if labour don’t gain them, then the conservatives will still win.

And fwiw they re going to gain votes with the changing of green targets. I have never voted for them and never will, but. Agree re the energy targets, and a large number of the public do as well. Interesting that the press haven’t been interviewing members of the public criticising this move. that’s because there aren’t many who do. Anyone with critical thinking skills knows that the targets were unreasonable.

Have you listened to the news at all this week

just a couple of links. Of course it won’t happen , you can’t change the end if education without changing the curriculum for 11-16 first. It would be fearsomely expensive and so many schools are falling down . Etc etc it’s just distraction tactics

My biggest dread is a hung parliament with Labour having to compromise with other parties and self id sneaking in through the back door.

Fear not, current polling is suggestive of a Labour majority of over 150 seats.

Sunak this week manage to reduce his personal populaty rating as he did with his now rejected Stop the Boats policy.

LlynTegid · 24/09/2023 07:15

Mr Sunak is a prisoner to parts of the Tory party. Hence the inability to do or focus on the things he'd probably prefer.

MsJinks · 24/09/2023 07:20

Whether you agree/disagree with scrapping the green targets the delivery was an absolute farce - it should have gone to Parliament first too, though I know Tories haven’t bothered with that much lately. He sounded very flat and not that sincere, and I just think he was pushed into doing this quickly rather than being a lead on it. I don’t agree with majority of his policies but he did have a smattering of understanding and enthusiasm in delivery previously - this was weird.
The rest since that is just downright bizarre and I can’t imagine a reason - green scrapping benefits mates/big companies, Tory MPs mates/companies - but A levels I have no clue!
I imagine he’s disappointed to be ‘told’/pushed into things he didn’t set up, it’s not what you might expect being a PM to be. He’s definitely not going to enjoy feeling of failure, guess no one does though. See how long they keep him as leader to do what they need doing before probably leaving office for a while.

Inkpotlover · 24/09/2023 07:21

He's literally throwing any kind of shit at the wall to see what sticks as a vote winner but it has absolutely nothing to do with making things better for the electorate and everything to do with protecting his personal legacy. When the Tories lose (oh happy days!), he can say 'well I tried to push for significant reform as the 'change PM' but voters couldn't get past 13 years of Tory mismanagement so it's not my fault we lost.' While conveniently neglecting he was Chancellor for a chunk of it.

Dizzybelle · 24/09/2023 07:25

But why is that shocking, in any way? The country is being run by entitled Tory millionaires and billionaires, who absolutely have no idea, haven’t a clue about every day life, every day reality, for the majority of people in this country. They got into politics because they could get something personally for themselves and not because they have a true calling and care about the everyday people. Only the NHS remains and they stripping the shit out of that but blaming the doctors and nurses for the dire state it is in.

Inkpotlover · 24/09/2023 07:26

On another note, I find it baffling so many agree with his rolling back net zero targets. The planet is a slither from being permanently fucked. Our children and their children are going to suffer because of it. You think migration is bad now, just wait until the southern hemisphere becomes so hot it is inhabitable and everyone heads north. Some of you younger MN might still be alive to see that happen. How can anyone think that delaying any measures that could lessen the severity of civilisation imploding is a sensible idea beyond me.

Do people agree with the rolling back and abandoning of Stop the Boats?

Or are they looking for yet another in the long list of odd reasons to justify voting Tory.
But Jeremy Corbyn
Keir had a beer
They know what a woman is

And so on?

TakenTheBiscuit · 24/09/2023 07:37

Generally yes. Would never vote for him. But I do actually support scrapping a levels and having a baccalaureate/ diploma system. As well as keeping BTECS and apprenticeships. Many countries do, and I think many young people struggle narrowing their choices down, I think this would offer a more rounded approach to the academic route.
I hope that idea is taken on board by whoever is next. (I don’t think there’s anything the tories can say that will make them win the next election!)

Zodfa · 24/09/2023 07:46

He only seems to care about the mad people who will vote Tory regardless, and to have given up on swing voters.

The A Levels thing is interesting, unusual for him to actually positively want to do something rather than his usual approach of stopping projects and funding and continuing to let everything fall apart.
