DS (4) was fine all day yesterday. We went out for dinner last night and he ate all of his (including beans which may be relevant). We then had our weekly family movie night, DS had some squash and a tiny bit of chocolate whilst watching the movie. Normally on movie night we let the DC stay up later than normal so they usually sleep in aswell.

He's now woken up at 4 this morning crying saying his stomach hurts. I instantly thought its because he ate so much last night so encouraged him to go to the toilet which he did. He did a poop but said his stomach was still hurting.

He's now white as a ghost, feels really cold and clammy to the touch and is saying his tummy hurts so much he can't stand up. I've got him to walk a little bit which he has but he's bent over whilst doing it bless him.

I don't want to take him anywhere yet incase it is just wind from the beans Blush but I would have thought going to the toilet would have helped ease that a bit which it hasn't. Anyone had this with their little ones?

Usually the hospital let you call the ward for a number of hours after discharge (something like 24 etc) Id call.

daydreaming3 · 24/09/2023 14:12

@lilyblue5 yeah we've got open access for 24 hours so I'll give them a call if he doesn't improve in the next hour

It's a peanut allergy.

Helpful. Not.

Oh no! I was just about to post what good news it was that he was much better.
What a shame.
I'd ring sooner rather than later xxx

Marmunia10667 · 24/09/2023 14:33

By any chance did he get the nasal flu vaccine? This happened my DD when she was 4 with exact symptoms. She was up and down like this for six months. Needless to say, she hasn't had any vaxes since.

WongWifi · 24/09/2023 14:34

I wanted to say that when very ill, a patient may seem to improve then suddenly worsen. I’d be taking him back if there’s no improvement soon.

daydreaming3 · 24/09/2023 14:41

@Marmunia10667 no he's not had it yet, due to have in October I think

OP, I'd be really really worried that it was appendicitis, and the pain stopped because it burst, and now the temp etc is because of all the toxic stuff released.

I'd be taking him straight back to the ward. I wouldn't wait at all.

oh no, hope you're both ok

daydreaming3 · 24/09/2023 14:55

@GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut at the moment although he is in pain it's nothing like the pain yesterday. It's stopping him eating and he says it hurts but he is still able to stand and walk around which he wasn't able to do yesterday so I'm not sure whether he needs to go back yet or not

This is what my DS was like with mesenteric adenitis (swollen tummy glands).

Is your son skinny as we were told if they are then the glands have less padding and so can cause more pain.

Really hope he picks up again soon but don't be afraid to take him back just trust your gut

daydreaming3 · 24/09/2023 15:05

Just on the phone to the hospital again as he's back to being in foetal position bless him

Spareus · 24/09/2023 15:07

Oh no, really feel for you both and hope you get to bottom of it. Like @BabyIcecream we had a similar situation with mesenteric adenitis, had they ruled this out? Worrying for you, hope he feels better soon x

duringthewarrodney · 24/09/2023 15:14

Oh you poor thing, you must be worried beyond comprehension.

Just wanted to add my best wishes to you and your family and hope little one's feeling a whole lot better very soon.

snapple21 · 24/09/2023 15:14

Gosh this must be so worrying! Hope you get some answers soon.

Floralnomad · 24/09/2023 15:18

Hope you get to the bottom of it @daydreaming3 .

Natsku · 24/09/2023 15:20

Oh no :( I think he really needs to go back and get bloods done to check for infection markers, in case it was his appendix and it burst.

Mischance · 24/09/2023 15:23

Sorry to hear this - he needs to go back. Hope your call to the hospital is helpful.

Balloonhearts · 24/09/2023 15:24

Yeah I'd take him straight back, something is definitely not right. Did he ever have the CT scan? Push for it this time as everything else is clear but there is obviously something wrong.

JANEY205 · 24/09/2023 15:28

I hope he feels better OP, how worrying for you!! The fever means they should be checking him for infection asap and it may make sense to do another ultrasound or mri now xx

JANEY205 · 24/09/2023 15:28

Did they also repeat the UTI test and actually culture it? The UTI dipstick test is really unreliable unfortunately!

Iwillpassthanks · 24/09/2023 15:33

We’re you on your own throughout OP?

PoshPineapple · 24/09/2023 15:33

I'm late to the party as usual, and hopefully by now you are getting some advice as to whether he needs to be seen again (although I'd argue with anyone who says 'watch him and see' for any longer).

But - I just wanted to say that when one of my TDDs was 6, she had a very similar set of symptoms and just the same as you, appendicitis was ruled out quickly, as the pain was centralised and not radiating to the right-hand side. Also, the doctors said that appendix pain typically DOESN'T hurt when pressure is applied, but that the pain would manifest when the pressure is released - DD didn't react to either as expected. She was discharged after 24 hours with instructions to starve her and ride out whatever it was and she seemed to improve. However, less than 8 hours later, she was screaming in pain, developed a fever (hadn't had a temperature at all in the 48 hours prior) and was vomiting violently. She was taken in on blue lights and operated on within 3 hours - her appendix had ruptured. She developed sepsis during surgery and spent 5 days in ICU and another 5 days in HDU. A week after that, you would barely know there had been anything wrong with her!

We were told later that her brief improvement in symptoms was likely the point at which the appendix ruptured and the release of pressure temporarily relieved the pain, before the poison spread around her body.

Like you, I knew there was more to it than 'a bug', but it's really difficult to convey that to medics without being dismissed as a fretful Mum. You know your son better than anyone else in the world - go with your gut and don't be fobbed off with 'it's probably just a virus'. At their age, they can seem to improve as quickly as they fell ill, but that means they can also decline again rapidly.

You're in my thoughts and I'm sure like many others on here, I'll be checking back and hoping fervently for some good news! Look after both of you and hopefully this will all be a distant nightmare very soon.
