DS (4) was fine all day yesterday. We went out for dinner last night and he ate all of his (including beans which may be relevant). We then had our weekly family movie night, DS had some squash and a tiny bit of chocolate whilst watching the movie. Normally on movie night we let the DC stay up later than normal so they usually sleep in aswell.

He's now woken up at 4 this morning crying saying his stomach hurts. I instantly thought its because he ate so much last night so encouraged him to go to the toilet which he did. He did a poop but said his stomach was still hurting.

He's now white as a ghost, feels really cold and clammy to the touch and is saying his tummy hurts so much he can't stand up. I've got him to walk a little bit which he has but he's bent over whilst doing it bless him.

I don't want to take him anywhere yet incase it is just wind from the beans Blush but I would have thought going to the toilet would have helped ease that a bit which it hasn't. Anyone had this with their little ones?

@Onceacheetah they did a urine dip yesterday and it was clear but I've just been to speak to the nurse and they want another sample just incase. I'm hoping if he stays like this we will be discharged later

I have heard that dip tests can miss infections. Just because the test is negative does not mean that he does not have one.

AbbeyGailsParty · 24/09/2023 11:58

I’m not a medic.
Coeliac?
Sounds very much like appendix.
Possible UTI spread to kidney?

I hope you find what it is and your son is better soon.

daydreaming3 · 24/09/2023 12:37

We are back home now as the dr was happy to discharge him. He seems almost fully back to normal, he's had another long sleep this morning but I think he's just exhausted from all the tests. The dr felt his stomach this morning and he was absolute fine when pressed, no pain at all compared to yesterday. He is still peeing a lot but the dr said to just keep an eye on that for the next few days and call the Gp if needed. He's very hungry again and asking for lots of food which is just like he normally is! Grin

I'll keep an eye on him for the next few days but I am hoping we are over whatever it was! The dr thinks a mix of having an injury and some type of viral infection that his body just struggled to fight off which is why he was so drowsy and unresponsive yesterday. I'm just happy to have my happy cheeky boy back this morning x

Great news x

starfishmummy · 24/09/2023 12:40

Have they looked for kidney/bladder stones?

This is reminding me of a young ds who they kept wanting to send home as he'd brighten up for rounds- due to the nurses giving pain meds just before the doctors arrived...

WeirdBarbie · 24/09/2023 12:41

Glad he’s better and home.

FWIW I had a grumbling appendix for 3 years before acute appendicitis. Very few people seem to know this can happen. If this happens again I’d be pushing for removal. I had exactly the symptoms your son had - 3 separate attacks, one was 48 hours, the other ten days.

autienotnaughty · 24/09/2023 12:41

Glad he's doing better goes to show some viruses can be really nasty.

Strictlyfanoftenyears · 24/09/2023 12:45

Good news, Im sure you will keep a good eye on him. Unfortunately doctors are adept at blaming "a virus" for anything they cant diagnose.......

Floralnomad · 24/09/2023 12:48

Great news @daydreaming3

Mammajay · 24/09/2023 12:51

Brilliant that he is getting better. You did the right thing taking him in to hospital. Hope he is soon fully recovered. Come back and let us know later

Melroses · 24/09/2023 12:52

It does sound kidney stone like - keep checking urine in case he passes anything.

daydreaming3 · 24/09/2023 12:53

Thank you so much for everyone commenting and helping keep me sane. I've never been so worried as I was yesterday.

I'm really glad to be back home but I'm going to have a very low threshold for taking him back if I think there's anything not right. I'll be keeping a note of all the suggestions that have been made as there's some very sensible things to look out for here!

So glad he's feeling so much better. Must be such a relief for you.

Sunshinenrain · 24/09/2023 13:00

That’s great news!

It sounds like the doctors gave him lots of tests and ruled out anything they thought it could be.
They know what they’re doing and get it spot on 99% of the time.

Obviously keep an extra eye on him but hopefully it’s exactly what they said it was and he’ll be right as rain soon enough.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 24/09/2023 13:01

Just to add my own contribution, when I was about 35, I developed dreadful abdominal pain, so bad I was clammy and sweating and feeling sick. I went to A&E and they did an xray and all they could find was slight inflammation in my intestine. The pain went off on its own after about five hours, and I went home. It came back again but less acutely. 24 hours later I passed a bit of poo that had clearly been the problem: rock hard, not even particularly big. I couldn't believe that all that pain was due to something so straightforward. Do keep an eye on this for your son.

rainbowstardrops · 24/09/2023 13:06

Great news! I keep checking in to see how your little one is!!! Duvet on the sofa and a nice film (and maybe a kip for you!)

Glad your ok and ds is feeling much better.

Low threshold sounds like a sensible approach.

sugarrosepetal · 24/09/2023 13:27

I'm so glad the wee one is feeling a bit better. Did they check for kidney stones? They can cause a miriad of symptoms and a few of them are how your son was presenting. UTI dip tests don't always show the presence of these either. Hopefully he fully recovers soon. X

rainbowruthie · 24/09/2023 13:35

Great news

newusern1 · 24/09/2023 13:44

So glad to hear he is better. It does sound like it could have been mesenteric addenitis from a viral infection. DS has never had it again but for some children can they have it more than once so worth bearing in mind for the future x

sayitkindly · 24/09/2023 13:44

wonderful news @daydreaming3 hope you're DS continues to improve and there are no further episodes

Bettyboobaloo · 24/09/2023 13:49

It's a peanut allergy.

Stressedafff · 24/09/2023 13:50

Yayyy I’m glad he’s home and feeling better.
My cousin used to have mesentric adenitis and she was exactly like how you describe your DS. Xxx
