Anyone up who knows what this could be? DS in pain.

DS (4) was fine all day yesterday. We went out for dinner last night and he ate all of his (including beans which may be relevant). We then had our weekly family movie night, DS had some squash and a tiny bit of chocolate whilst watching the movie. Normally on movie night we let the DC stay up later than normal so they usually sleep in aswell.

He's now woken up at 4 this morning crying saying his stomach hurts. I instantly thought its because he ate so much last night so encouraged him to go to the toilet which he did. He did a poop but said his stomach was still hurting.

He's now white as a ghost, feels really cold and clammy to the touch and is saying his tummy hurts so much he can't stand up. I've got him to walk a little bit which he has but he's bent over whilst doing it bless him.

I don't want to take him anywhere yet incase it is just wind from the beans Blush but I would have thought going to the toilet would have helped ease that a bit which it hasn't. Anyone had this with their little ones?

Just wanted to wish you and your DS all the very best of luck, OP - you're doing brilliantly, stand your ground, much better to fight too hard than not enough! It sounds utterly awful, hope there is someone looking out for you as well. Bon courage.

stayclosetoyourself · 23/09/2023 18:41

The Drs have to rule out the most serious things first such as anything acute intra abdominally or sepsis / serious infection etc once they are ruled out the less serious things can be considered

Ladylalaboo1 · 23/09/2023 18:43

How bad was the bike injury op? Just because I remember briefly reading a story a few years ago about a child who had had an injury on a bike, and had then fallen Ill a few days later with similar symptoms they didn't even suspect the bike accident. So then they didn't realise but she had internal bleeding from the bike injury. Obviously it's probably not that but I just wanted to mention incase it was a bad fall off the bike and it could be a reason for the pain? Couldn't live with myself if I didn't say anything. Fingers crossed its just wind though! Xxx

AskingForAFriend12 · 23/09/2023 18:48

I am also concerned regarding internal bleeding reading about the bike injury. He absolutely needs to have CT or MRI.

Sitchervice · 23/09/2023 18:50

@daydreaming3 you need to tell them what you want and tell them your his advocate. If they don't listen then tell them you want to make a complaint and tell them it's because they clearly don't care that he's in so much pain and that you can't manage that at home.

Alot of NHS doctors just don't care unless it's screaming in your face obvious.

ExpressCheckout · 23/09/2023 18:51

Your instinct is telling you something is not right.

You need to be clear about what your concerns are and what you expect from the clinical staff. It's hard but try not to show too much emotion at this point, you've shown this already.

Instead, calmly and with eye contact explain that you are not happy, that you want to speak to the on-call Matron (there will be one in the hospital 24/7), that you want a second medical opinion, and that you expect this to happen tonight.

I hope this helps - and for the emotions, keep posting here for listening ears.

Moonshine160 · 23/09/2023 18:53

You are his mum and your gut is telling you that something is not right and this is more than just a stomach bug. Advocate for your little boy and do not leave that hospital until you’re confident it’s nothing serious. Hoping he feels better soon 💐 sounds awful.

GoldenSpangles · 23/09/2023 18:53

My son got a yersina infection as a teenager. We don't know how he got it because he was a bit of a compulsive hand washer in those days. He ended up getting his appendix removed because the doctors decided it was appendicitis. He was very unwell. He was on morphine for the pain.

AD1996 · 23/09/2023 18:54

Could he have swallowed a water bead op? They are blind on any sort of X-rays etc (sorry if this has already been suggested) hope you have some answers soon x

stayclosetoyourself · 23/09/2023 18:55

First step I think would be just tell his nurse your concerns - you can do this in a nice way, just say you think he is really unwell but you're not sure why from what they've said and seems to be getting worse. Can they check him / are his obs ok

Notsuredontknow · 23/09/2023 18:56

We’re all behind you Op, definitely keep pushing - it’s good the nurse seems to agree with you.

Philosopherstone · 23/09/2023 19:01

Are they not giving him decent pain relief?

PureAmazonian · 23/09/2023 19:03

@daydreaming3
Op I had the exact same symptoms, when I was 10. It ended up being appendicitis, but the doctors didn't believe it was due to the pain being on the wrong side. My mum wouldn't accept it, and refuse to leave the hospital. They ended up taking me into surgery as explorative surgery and found my appendix severely infected and said if I had gone another 12 hours it would've ruptured.

Stay strong and advocate for that little baby! I hope you get to the bottom of it!! ❤️

lilyblue5 · 23/09/2023 19:03

Oh OP this is awful, poor little guy. Even IF (I don’t think it is) it was a sick bug the main symptoms usually pass in a few hours. This is far far too much! Hope they get to the bottom of it quickly. X

IthinkIsawahairbrushbackthere · 23/09/2023 19:06

Just a thought - someone mentioned lymph nodes. Apparently I was once sent home from infant school in tears because of "tummy ache". I had a severe throat infection and the pain was inflamed glands in my abdomen. I had no other symptoms but the GP diagnosed it after looking in my throat. Even now the first sign I have of a cold is pains in the abdomen.

Okaaaay · 23/09/2023 19:09

OP this is awful, I am holding your hand virtually. You must be terrified. Please be absolutely clear that you are not happy to take him home until there is an of understanding of what is driving his extreme pain, or he improves. Be explicit that you don’t think he is safe and you want him to be observed over night. You are doing brilliantly to advocate for him, and it’s not unreasonable to keep a 4 year old who is experiencing that level of pain and vomiting when mobilising in hospital for a night. Any paediatricians here who can vouch for this to give OP some confidence?

You’re not overreacting OP.

MeMySonAnd1 · 23/09/2023 19:11

Op, O have no medical background but do not let them send you home. If the doctor think is nothing, demand a second opinion, the fact that they are struggling to find the cause doesn’t mean that there is no problem.

Bertiesmum3 · 23/09/2023 19:12

No advice (sorry)
juus came to wish your son a speedy recovery xxx

mrshoho · 23/09/2023 19:15

So sorry for you and your little boy. I hope he can get settled and get relief from the pain. It is encouraging that the blood tests and xray/scans are ok. Thankfully he's on the ward and will be monitored. I hope you get to have some rest later xxx

Natsku · 23/09/2023 19:16

I'm so sorry he's not getting any better, with that level of pain he really needs more investigation. My appendicitis wasn't spotted on ultrasound or the other kind of scan they did (pet maybe), it took an MRI to spot it, so I would not be happy with a clear ultrasound with such severe symptoms.

MMUmum · 23/09/2023 19:18

Needs A&E to rule out appendicitis

Retsina24 · 23/09/2023 19:20

I keep checking in to see how your little man is doing. Sending hugs your way and hope they get to the bottom of it very soon xx

Okaaaay · 23/09/2023 19:22

OP, please make sure they have ruled out any liver / pancreatic trauma as a result of the bike incident. If you saw the hit and it was definitely his chest then maybe not, but there are recent cases of young children sustaining internal trauma to liver / pancreas for bike bangs / knocks. I think this requires a CT to be sure.

BabyIcecream · 23/09/2023 19:26

Poor little thing. And poor you OP.
You are in the right place just keep advocating for him as you are.

My DS had mesenteric adenonitis at about that age. We went to A&E as it does mimic appendicitis. He was writhing around in pain and no amount of pain relief (paracetamol/nurofen) helped. It was horrible but he didn't bounce back.

Fingers crossed for you both
