DS (4) was fine all day yesterday. We went out for dinner last night and he ate all of his (including beans which may be relevant). We then had our weekly family movie night, DS had some squash and a tiny bit of chocolate whilst watching the movie. Normally on movie night we let the DC stay up later than normal so they usually sleep in aswell.

He's now woken up at 4 this morning crying saying his stomach hurts. I instantly thought its because he ate so much last night so encouraged him to go to the toilet which he did. He did a poop but said his stomach was still hurting.

He's now white as a ghost, feels really cold and clammy to the touch and is saying his tummy hurts so much he can't stand up. I've got him to walk a little bit which he has but he's bent over whilst doing it bless him.

I don't want to take him anywhere yet incase it is just wind from the beans Blush but I would have thought going to the toilet would have helped ease that a bit which it hasn't. Anyone had this with their little ones?

What a shocking experience. I hope your little boy starts to feel better.
To those when are saying. ‘Refuse to take him home’ or ‘insist on a CT Scan’ how do you actually do this? Do you just sit in the ward and refuse to move? What would happen, would they call security? How do you insist to a doctor that you want a particular procedure in the face of ‘Doctor knows best’ ?

Not that you should need to. What a nightmare.

LuluBlakey1 · 23/09/2023 17:59

Yes, the Martha Mills story was awful. She damaged her pancreas after slipping on her bike and the handlebar banged into her chest and damaged her pancreas- with just a small red mark on her chest. Pancreatic damage can be terrible. I'm really not wanting to scare you OP but insist in them checking his pancreas and doing BPEWS chart scores on him. It probably isn't that but better safe than sorry. They are being quick to dismiss him as not seriously ill. Ultrasounds often don't show enough detail. A CT scan will.
Hope you are ok and he turns a corner. There is no way a child in that much pain should be sent home or just put on fluids.

daydreaming3 · 23/09/2023 18:01

He has had a special blood test for his pancreas apparently and that came back ok luckily!

Nothing helpful to add but wanted to wish you luck. How horribly stressful for you and your son. Fingers crossed they get to the bottom of it and he’s on the mend soon. X

stayclosetoyourself · 23/09/2023 18:07

How is he doing OP? Glad you have a plan x

The bike accident is worrying. That is exactly what happened to Martha Mills. A slow speed slip on her bike caused damage to her pancreas and she died from sepsis.

Exactly what I thought. The very same accident.

olympicsrock · 23/09/2023 18:08

Interestingly ultrasound scans often show more detail than CT in kids as CT relies in part on fat within tissues to differentiate the planes. Kids have very little internal fat….

daydreaming3 · 23/09/2023 18:08

@stayclosetoyourself I've just taken a video of him writhing around in pain even when lying down now. And that's after he's had more pain relief. He can't keep his eyes open for more than a few seconds. There is something really wrong and nobody is listening to me! I just don't want him to get any worse!

Just read through. This is awful.
Have they ruled out intessuption I think it's called
Apparently v common at that age .

Trudij123 · 23/09/2023 18:11

Oh my goodness - I hope he settles and you get some answers soon

BlueBox81 · 23/09/2023 18:12

Hi OP, my DD had very similar to what you describe last year and nothing was found, so in the end they concluded the most likely cause was sickness bug with swollen lymph nodes, so it could be this. Given the bike accident though i would 100% not agree to take him home until improvement is seen and I would push for a CT just in case there is some organ damage. I'm not an expert but presumably this could show up things that a CT can not. Good luck, i really feel for you both.

JANEY205 · 23/09/2023 18:12

OP, I recently had similar symptoms and I’m pregnant and so they did an MRI on me! Much safer than a CT. Would an MRI be an option if he continues to seem so poorly? Have they done any stool samples? This is how my toddler and I got diagnosed with noro but neither of us were struggling to stay awake.

lolly07766 · 23/09/2023 18:16

Keep pushing OP, go with your gut, you know your own son. I had similar experience with my daughter but she was much older. Kept getting sent home from hospitals/A&E was having horrendous pains in her shoulders, head and neck, sickness and diarrhoea.
Last Dr wanted to send her home with codiene, I refused.
Turned out in the end she had bacterial pericarditis and fluid around her heart. Spent 8 weeks in hospital and much longer recovery time.
I'm not suggesting this it what wrong with your son but, you as his mum knows when something isn't right.
I hope they get it sorted for you! Flowers

Pieceofpurplesky · 23/09/2023 18:16

My DS was clammy and couldn't stand up. An ultrasound showed nothing but one doctor insisted on further tests. He had internal bleeding from a bike accident that didn't make him cry at the time.
Stand your ground OP, you are being Magnificent for your boy

Mumto1boyo · 23/09/2023 18:21

REALLY hope its just a case of bad trapped wind. I used to get it so bad I'd be heaving and bringing up bile. Hope you get some answers and your boy feels better soon.

Imnotaslimjim · 23/09/2023 18:22

This must be so, so scary for you OP but you are being amazing. Just keep reiterating that you don't feel safe taking him home until you see an improvement or a diagnosis and treatment. Hope all is well soon

Hi OP
I think just say to his nurse you feel his pain is worsening he's distressed and seems more unwell, do they need to check him over what does she think? They can do obs and see how he is doing / ask the dr

Whereareallthejellyfish · 23/09/2023 18:23

I echo PP's again, definitely stand your ground, no one knows their children like their Mum!!

They need to fully investigate, even if it is something 'simple' it doesn't matter. Better to rule everything out than the alternative

You are doing brilliantly, please don't leave that hospital until you are happy xx

HelenMirrensWeightedBlanket · 23/09/2023 18:29

I was in pain like this as a teenager (clammy, sobbing, cold) - turned out to be a severe bladder infection. V glad they’ve ruled that out.

Is there any chance his tiredness is caused by a combination of being up in the night, plus the pain? I find pain exhausting.

Do hope you get some answers soon x

1992H · 23/09/2023 18:30

Cannot imagine how hard this is for you, but I think you are doing the right thing to not leave.
I hope a cause is found and all resolved soon

BadHairBae · 23/09/2023 18:30

I really hope DS is feeling better soon. 🤞 poor thing

richteaftw · 23/09/2023 18:31

Did they scan his kidneys? Could it be pyelonephritis?

asosStalker · 23/09/2023 18:33

How awful for you OP. I really hope you get some answers and they can get him sorted.

GoldenKiwi · 23/09/2023 18:36

I really hope they get to the bottom of it and that he is feeling better soon OP.

frostyfingers · 23/09/2023 18:38

If it hasn’t been mentioned yet, ask them to consider stomach migraine. My son had this and he was writhing around and screaming in pain similar to how you describe. This is from Google. What are the symptoms of abdominal migraine? The main symptom of abdominal migraine are recurrent episodes of moderate to severe stomach pain that lasts for between 1 and 72 hours. Other symptoms can include nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, and pale appearance. (These symptoms rarely occur between episodes.) I had never heard of it until he experienced it, and it’s a pretty tame description of something that it obviously horrendously painful. Really hope you can get him sorted.
