Anyone up who knows what this could be? DS in pain.

DS (4) was fine all day yesterday. We went out for dinner last night and he ate all of his (including beans which may be relevant). We then had our weekly family movie night, DS had some squash and a tiny bit of chocolate whilst watching the movie. Normally on movie night we let the DC stay up later than normal so they usually sleep in aswell.

He's now woken up at 4 this morning crying saying his stomach hurts. I instantly thought its because he ate so much last night so encouraged him to go to the toilet which he did. He did a poop but said his stomach was still hurting.

He's now white as a ghost, feels really cold and clammy to the touch and is saying his tummy hurts so much he can't stand up. I've got him to walk a little bit which he has but he's bent over whilst doing it bless him.

I don't want to take him anywhere yet incase it is just wind from the beans Blush but I would have thought going to the toilet would have helped ease that a bit which it hasn't. Anyone had this with their little ones?

Sounds awful. Hope you get answers

Solesisterouch · 23/09/2023 19:29

My DS was in with suspected appendicitis but he had bowel inflammation and then ultimately diagnosed coeliac. But this sounds far worse pain wise

OP, please make sure they have ruled out any liver / pancreatic trauma as a result of the bike incident. If you saw the hit and it was definitely his chest then maybe not, but there are recent cases of young children sustaining internal trauma to liver / pancreas for bike bangs / knocks. I think this requires a CT to be sure.

That's an excellent point. There was a little girl who hit her spleen on the handle bars whilst rising her bicycle.

PhantomUnicorn · 23/09/2023 19:30

stupid question.. has anyone ruled out food poisoning or Peritonitis?

only asking as i had it present with SEVERE stomach cramps. I've also had peritonitis before and that was god awful as well... both had me crying/curled up in extreme pain and unable to stand because of it.

I hope he gets some answers and feels better soon!

Drivingmecrazydizzy · 23/09/2023 19:30

How are things now op? Xx

Fiddlesticks25 · 23/09/2023 19:31

Gosh OP, I have no suggestions that haven't already been covered but wishing you and you son all the best

colourwheelofortune · 23/09/2023 19:33

Hope he perks up soon. Its so difficult when they are this young. It probably is a nasty tummy bug as you do get abdominal pain, but it is best to stay overnight for observation.

Caerulea · 23/09/2023 19:42

Oh I hope your small person is doing OK, it's genuinely terrifying being in hospital.

DS1 used to get abdominal migraines which looked just like this & DS2 had a burst appendix...which looked just like this too initially. The latter took them a few hours to realise & tbh by that time he was well passed screaming in pain. So it really can be something or nothing. You're in the best place & keep pushing for answers - sounds like the nurses are on your side. Good luck & hoping it's just a massive massive fart 🙏

Differentstarts · 23/09/2023 19:44

Your doing really well op, don't let them brush you off. Do not leave until you feel comfortable. I hope you get answers soon

Wall13 · 23/09/2023 19:48

Several years ago my son had similar symptoms. All tests were coming back clear. Turns out he was severely constipated. (I know you said he had a poo this morning, but was it a proper poo, or an overflow poo?)

Hope he feels better soon and you get some answers

EarthSight · 23/09/2023 19:46

OP I hope you read this because I've seen something about the fact he was active that day and was on his bike. I wonder if he has some kind of internal trauma.

Keep close, ask for a second opinion, and don't be afraid of being seen as difficult.

Yeah this was the exact article that I thought of when I read he had a bike injury - hopefully op can make the nurses aware x

Vanillazebra · 23/09/2023 19:49

OP can you push for the CT scan? Can you afford to offer to pay for a private one? I’m concerned about his spleen, you mentioned he knocked himself on his bike. I think (in my non professional opinion, they need to look at his spleen.)
sending hugs

Delphinium20 · 23/09/2023 19:59

I'm so sorry you're going through this - your poor son. Keep pushing and hopefully they will find answers. Thinking of you.

Bedofroses2 · 23/09/2023 20:06

Do not leave that hospital, OP - I echo that when you mentioned the bike accident, my first thought was Martha Mills' story. Mention this to them if you have to. Do not leave until you know what is wrong and that he is improving.

Covidwoes · 23/09/2023 20:07

Oh OP, why is it SO hard these days to get some doctors to listen? You'd think after Martha Mills they'd be even more on it, but no. It's absolutely infuriating. I would get in touch with PALS and complain. Hopefully that'll kick someone into action.

Whiskeypowers · 23/09/2023 20:10

I am simply incredulous that they are thinking of discharging him. OP absolutely trust your instincts as a mother and stand your ground. This is not normal for a child at all. So sorry and hope you don’t get fobbed off

Mischance · 23/09/2023 20:13

A pulled muscle would not make him vomit and not eat. And the pain would have been apparent immediately after his bike mishap, not several days later. I hope they do keep him in for observation - I would not wish to take him home like this. What a worry for you - I hope it gets resolved soon.

truthhurts23 · 23/09/2023 20:14

my daughter has had this before actually more than once, it could be food poisoning, or it could also be some sort of stomach flu , has he had any cold symptoms like cough or runny nose?

He is in pain because his stomach is cramping up and it hurts, the worst of it will pass in around 1-3 days

make sure every time he vomits, you give him dioralyte, tiny sips every 5 minutes, , even if you have to drip drop the liquid into his mouth
if he has imbalance he will just keep feeling sick

use calpol for the pain not ibuprofen

I have been told by different nurses not to give ibuprofen when there is vomiting because some of the side effects of ibuprofen include vomiting, nausea and stomach irritation which isn't helpful when he is already sensitive,
stick with calpol

let him rest on his side, not his back

when the vomiting has stopped for a few hours, give him something dry to eat like crackers, it will help settle his stomach and keep giving him room temp water not the chilled water

90sfilm · 23/09/2023 20:15

I'm sorry if this has already been suggested but have they checked his spleen? I read about a girl who had fallen off her bike and had ruptured her spleen and was in agony.

OnedayIwillfeelfree · 23/09/2023 20:15

I hope he feels better very soon .

Chocolategirl19791 · 23/09/2023 20:22

Hoping he's feeling better soon.

BeautifulWar · 23/09/2023 20:31

Have they checked for a twisted bowel or bowel obstruction?

I know someone whose symptoms presented very much like this.

BA36 · 23/09/2023 20:33

Really hope he starts to feel better soon and you get some answers.
not the same symptoms but my 2 year old was in hospital for almost 2 weeks last summer with a fever they couldn’t get under control despite IV antibiotics.
if he’s had bloods, did they check his infection markers (CRP)?
i would also Ask to speak to the lead consultant (they will have one who in in charge of the unit) and ask what their plan is to not only find out the cause but to also deal with his pain.
I totally understand how you’re feeling, they couldn’t work out what was wrong with my son and I was terrified…

Youthinkyoureuniqueyourejustastatistic · 23/09/2023 20:33

Sorry I haven’t read all the posts but I’m assuming they’ve tested for something like PIMS-TS which is an immune/inflammatory condition that can happen about 6 weeks after a covid infection.

Symptoms are painful stomach, red/chapped lips, d&v, headaches, irritability, tiredness and weakness https://www.gosh.nhs.uk/conditions-and-treatments/conditions-we-treat/paediatric-inflammatory-multisystem-syndrome-pims/#:~:text=Paediatric%20Inflammatory%20Multisystem%20Syndrome%20(PIMS)%20is%20a%20new%20condition%20that,off%20infection%2C%20injury%20and%20disease.

another similar condition is Kawasaki disease.

Hopefully they have ruled this out already but it doesn’t hurt to ask.
You could also ask “could this be sepsis?” (I am definitely not saying that it is BUT it could trigger a different thought in a Dr who might just be thinking D&V bug 😬).

Hope he’s home well soon xxx
