Anyone up who knows what this could be? DS in pain.

DS (4) was fine all day yesterday. We went out for dinner last night and he ate all of his (including beans which may be relevant). We then had our weekly family movie night, DS had some squash and a tiny bit of chocolate whilst watching the movie. Normally on movie night we let the DC stay up later than normal so they usually sleep in aswell.

He's now woken up at 4 this morning crying saying his stomach hurts. I instantly thought its because he ate so much last night so encouraged him to go to the toilet which he did. He did a poop but said his stomach was still hurting.

He's now white as a ghost, feels really cold and clammy to the touch and is saying his tummy hurts so much he can't stand up. I've got him to walk a little bit which he has but he's bent over whilst doing it bless him.

I don't want to take him anywhere yet incase it is just wind from the beans Blush but I would have thought going to the toilet would have helped ease that a bit which it hasn't. Anyone had this with their little ones?

To those posters who felt it appropriate to be smug that they wouldn't ask for advice on something like this. You are a bunch of CU next Tuesdays.

Hope he's ok op and you too Flowers

My3dahliasarebloominlovely · 23/09/2023 16:40

OP I hope that they get the answer soon and your little one feels better soon. Sending virtual hugs and support

There's such poor faith in doctors on Mumsnet it's shocking. I mean it's literally our job to spend every working minute and ounce of energy working out what the patients problem is with examination and tests and then treating it.
The CT should give answers OP take care xx

Yes but stories such as that of Martha Mills remind us that Doctors are not super humans and parents should feel comfortable challenging them and advocating for their children if necessary.

MoiraRosesBaybay · 23/09/2023 16:44

I had pain similar to this 20 odd years ago. Couldn’t stand, could only curl up etc. I was about 35 at the time. I was kept in overnight, scanned, blood tests, examined and they never found anything wrong.

Seriously are you really surprised? Many of us have medical trauma or health issues from being dismissed, doctors not actually running the correct tests, doctors having god complexes and not listening. This isn’t an attack on Drs because the good ones are incredible! But Drs can and do make mistakes, some refuse to listen. My own child has a life long injury from a Drs misdiagnosis and then refusing to listen. It took another Dr at a different hospital who actually listened to save my child’s life (and we were told by the first hospital nothing was wrong and he was fine to be at home). I’ve worked with children who have lifeline injuries from misdiagnosis. So yes I encourage everyone to research and advocate for yourself and your children. If a Dr doesn’t like that, tough luck!

DisquietintheRanks · 23/09/2023 16:50

To all those bickering on this thread, could I please point out that:

  • the OP has sought medical care for her son in an appropriate and timely manner.
  • the hospital is now treating her son in an appropriate and timely manner
  • the OP is understandably very worried and stressed, so maybe we could keep this thread supportive?
Frazzledandfried · 23/09/2023 16:51

Hope they get to the bottom of it soon. You did the right thing in asking for help when you did, ignore the unhelpful ones. Fingers crossed for a speedy recovery to your little chap.

MariePaperRoses · 23/09/2023 16:52

Best wishes to you and your son. Hope he will be ok and it's nothing serious .

daydreaming3 · 23/09/2023 16:53

He's just had the ultrasound and so far it sounds like everything was ok. When we saw the dr earlier he said if the ultrasound came back with nothing they would do a CT as not everything shows up with ultrasound. A new dr has now just come round and said basically they think he's fine and they can discharge him if the other tests come back ok. I've asked why he is still so lethargic and can't stay awake and is still in so much pain he can't stand and I've been told it's probably just a pulled muscle. I've just spoken to the nurse and said I'm really not happy to be going home when he's much worse than this morning and nobody can give me a clear explanation as to why!

Are you able to take him to the nearest children's hospital if they do discharge you?

They absolutely should not discharge him and for him to be vomiting and in so much pain is not a pulled muscle!

Gcsunnyside23 · 23/09/2023 16:55

Really hope he gets better soon, he's in the best place and they will take great care of him x

Peekingovertheparapet · 23/09/2023 16:57

Difficult. We had the same, although the child had settled and was less uncomfortable than on admission. He still spent 3-4 days immobile on the sofa though.

if you’re not happy to take him then say so; if you feel that you’re being pushed into discharge, ask at which point you should consider bringing him back.

I can see why some docs wouldn’t want to CT as it involves radiation - best only done when they think really necessary.

we had this ‘pulled muscle’ BS too though so I do feel your pain.

richteaftw · 23/09/2023 16:57

If they are worried about radiation they should do an MRI.

Timeandtune · 23/09/2023 17:01

Just popping in to say I am so sorry OP. It looks like your wee boy is in the best place and being thoroughly investigated.
Take care of yourself.

confusedmum2023 · 23/09/2023 17:01

@daydreaming3 could u try insisting on a 2nd opinion which may at least buy you more time there. I don’t think I’d be happy to take my child home if they are worse than when they first attended. Trust your instincts and if you aren’t happy make it known. Do u have anyone irl there to support u? Hope he makes a recovery soon x

spuddel · 23/09/2023 17:02

I'd be insisting on the CT scan the earlier doctor said was going to be done @daydreaming3

Pumpkinpie1 · 23/09/2023 17:04

Trust your instincts you know your child best. Insist on a second opinion and all tests . Stay strong

Jeez. I’m sorry they aren’t taking you seriously.

Ask them why a CT was previously offered and why they have now changed their minds?!

Minttee · 23/09/2023 17:07

I would definitely ask for the ct scan but ultimately what can you do if they say no? I'd probably leave and go to the nearest other hospital for a second opinion. Trust your gut, you know your child like no one else.

ClaudineDeBussy · 23/09/2023 17:09

@daydreaming3 Your poor little boy.
I am just a layperson but had the same symptoms as your son (as an adult). They could find nothing wrong with me on blood tests, x rays etc but I've never been in so much pain. It was much worse than childbirth. They wanted to discharge me but I couldn't stand up so I couldn't leave. Eventually they very grumpily said they would stick a camera down my throat as a final proof that there was nothing wrong. It turned out I had a burst appendix. That started with pain in the centre of my stomach, and that's where the pain largely remained (which is one reason they said it couldn't be appendicitis).
Has your son been given an anti-emetic? That's the one thing that made me feel very slightly better before they actually diagnosed me, because the only thing that's worse than that kind of pain is being sick when you move as well. I wasn't 'properly' sick, either - more like the way you describe.

Floopyfloop · 23/09/2023 17:10

Bless him that does not sound right!

My daughter and I have had similar symptoms all week and we have+ tested for covid. My daughter had really bad stomach pain and vomiting. I have had covid a few times but this has been an odd one!

MiniCooperLover · 23/09/2023 17:11

Why on earth would they think a four year old would be vomiting and crying in pain with a pulled muscle? He's not to the gym every day is he. OP it's very difficult but I'd be trying to insist he be kept in, I'm sure the Consultants strike hasn't helped things but that's not your fault.

spuddel · 23/09/2023 17:12

@daydreaming3 I seriously would refuse to leave. The doctor who said left side pain meant it wasn't appendicitis needs to clarify this because -

Left-sided acute appendicitis is a more and more frequent cause of misdiagnosis in acute appendicitis, and it should always be considered in any patient having left lower quadrant pain especially in the younger aged population. 43ontherocksporfavor · 23/09/2023 17:14

Sounds like appendix. DD had this at 4 years old. Waited ages in A&E as thee bloods said not. Eventually after 12 hours on a ward they said it was, operated first thing and it had burst!!! Luckily all was well and home in a few days. She’s now 23.

43ontherocksporfavor · 23/09/2023 17:15

Her pain started in centre and moved to the right but she could t stand up straight and sat with her knees to her chest whilst watching tv.
