Anyone up who knows what this could be? DS in pain.

DS (4) was fine all day yesterday. We went out for dinner last night and he ate all of his (including beans which may be relevant). We then had our weekly family movie night, DS had some squash and a tiny bit of chocolate whilst watching the movie. Normally on movie night we let the DC stay up later than normal so they usually sleep in aswell.

He's now woken up at 4 this morning crying saying his stomach hurts. I instantly thought its because he ate so much last night so encouraged him to go to the toilet which he did. He did a poop but said his stomach was still hurting.

He's now white as a ghost, feels really cold and clammy to the touch and is saying his tummy hurts so much he can't stand up. I've got him to walk a little bit which he has but he's bent over whilst doing it bless him.

I don't want to take him anywhere yet incase it is just wind from the beans Blush but I would have thought going to the toilet would have helped ease that a bit which it hasn't. Anyone had this with their little ones?

Do you think it was the consultant who just came round?
I guess if you convey that you are very worried and he is still very much not himself they may keep him in for monitoring overnight? As in until he is up and about, eating and drinking ?
Is there anything else awaited or is everything now back?
I'm not sure if they mean muscular pain after vomiting?? Hard to say obviously

Yes but stories such as that of Martha Mills remind us that Doctors are not super humans and parents should feel comfortable challenging them and advocating for their children if necessary.

I agree but you have to then be ready for drs to throw accusations of FII at you (happened to us our daughter was seriously ill but they thought I was ‘exaggerating for attention’

You have to be firm and say you aren’t leaving, state why (he is no better and no reason for his symptoms has been identified so you want him kept in for observation/further tests). Ask for a second opinion of needed.

SleepyJim · 23/09/2023 17:17

Hope your little one is feeling better soon OP.

daydreaming3 · 23/09/2023 17:19

@stayclosetoyourself it was a consultant that we saw first and then I don't know who this other dr was. He could have been another consultant but he didn't say.

Hun you stick to your guns and do nitgo home until you think he is better or you have answers . A few years ago I dealt with clinical negligence claims and as much as I want to say , doctors know best , I can’t . Mums know best , you know your son better than anyone . I would be worried with intestine issues as they cause bad pain . I hope they do a CT , demand to speak with a senior consultant. Massive love send your way , a few years ago I spend a few night with my son in hospital and it’s so so hard .

stayclosetoyourself · 23/09/2023 17:21

In my own opinion and disclaimer I'm not a paediatrician but have done paeds it would be nice to see him up and about able to eat and drink no more vomiting and no or minimal pain before home.

Boopeedoop · 23/09/2023 17:22

Refuse to take him home. If you still have no joy, demand to see the site manager. They are the ones in clinical control of the hospital.

Jackydaytona · 23/09/2023 17:23

Don't leave
Insist on the ct

Whereareallthejellyfish · 23/09/2023 17:24

I've been following and hoping your little lad improves, I echo other posters in that I absolutely wouldn't take him home.

Insist on a CT or MRI, it's not normal for a child to be in this much pain, a pulled muscle doesn't cause all his symptoms in a child. As a PP said, how exactly is he supposed to have pulled a muscle that badly?? I know Dr's are stretched atm but he really needs everything checked

Sending huge hugs to both of you xx

Hi OP. It's hard to know isn't it, could have been the Reg, could have been the junior Dr.
What exactly have they said about the plan now? How is Ds now? Xx

Considering this is the fastest moving thread on MN today, I'd be surprised if there aren't any people reading this who work or know someone who works at the hospital. Obviously OP is wise not to reveal where they are, but if there are any nurses or doctors around who are aware of a paeds case in their ward where the age and symptoms fit together then they may be able to look into it.

Sometimes it takes someone within the hospital to have a word with the doctor and help push for further scanning. A pulled muscle sounds like absolute bullshit, the second doctor was clearly trying to fob OP off and get them discharged.

CrotchetyQuaver · 23/09/2023 17:33

Good luck with all of this.
I too would push extremely hard to stay in and not go home, he sounds far too unwell to leave.

Agree! At the v least he needs to be kept in for observation.

DelilahBucket · 23/09/2023 17:34

@daydreaming3 I haven't read the full thread, just your posts but I just wanted to reassure you that I have had horrendous stomach pain with a bug on more than one occasion. And I mean horrendous, I sat sobbing "please help me" for several days and nights and rocking back and forth, with pain that took my breath away. It was with sickness and diarrhea. It does happen.

daydreaming3 · 23/09/2023 17:36

I've just spoken to the nurse again. I've tried to take him for a wee again and he screamed as soon as he stood up and the vomited again which he only does when I make him stand up. I've said I'm not happy that it's a pulled muscle or bruise or whatever and she's gone to speak to the drs again as she doesn't think it's right wither

Inflammation of the mesentery? It’s the abdominal lining and can often give symptoms like that of appendicitis? My boy had it about aged 9, gave us a real scare, can be kicked off by a virus? Does sound similar..hope he (and you) are ok x

curtaintwitcher78 · 23/09/2023 17:38

Any medical professionals here? I'm thinking about the 'Could it be Sepsis?' campaign. Am I way off?

daydreaming3 · 23/09/2023 17:38

I forgot to add that the reason they think pulled muscle is because he hit his chest on his bike yesterday, he was fine afterwards and played etc after crying for a few mins. That's why they did the X-ray to confirm it wasn't related and the first dr said that because he wasn't travelling fast and was fine afterwards it's not likely to be related. Second dr has now jumped on that and is trying to blame that as the cause

olympicsrock · 23/09/2023 17:39

OP i’m sorry that your little boy is feeling so ill. It clearly isn’t a pulled muscle and the nurse who said that 4 year old don’t get appendicitis was incorrect. There are a number of things it could be. We don’t always get to the bottom of abdominal pain .

There will almost certainly be a local protocol/ flow diagram for when to do a CT in a child with abdo pain , looking at the history, examination findings blood results , pulse, temperature etc and ultrasound results.

At the very least it sounds like he needs to be observed and seen again tomorrow for a further senior opinion. Ask to speak to the surgical cons if you haven’t seen them today .

I’m a doctor .

Ireolu · 23/09/2023 17:41

A pulled muscle would not cause lethargy, vomiting and such bad pain. Do not let them send him home please. Ask for a second clinical opinion. Ask what his bloods are showing. Has he had a fever?

stayclosetoyourself · 23/09/2023 17:41

Ah ok just reread your post, a few things still to come back. I think it sounds like maybe they will re review after these test results.

I would just ask what's happening first, then clearly say you don't feel happy taking him home until he's better in himself.

is he still nil by mouth?

VeloVixen · 23/09/2023 17:42

well I was always told that generally muscle pain will hurt on movement but not while still. And I think also very unlikely to be causing vomiting and screaming. Stand your ground OP. Don’t be fobbed off.

justasking111 · 23/09/2023 17:42

I'm so sorry he sounds so poorly

ItcanbeDone · 23/09/2023 17:42

Its bloody hard, but do stand your ground, you are his Mum, you know your child, you know this isn't right. My lot have pulled muscles, my 3 yr old had appendicitis too and didn't sound to be in as much pain as your lad. Sending a ton of strength to your little lad, poor bugger must be so upset. You will sort this xxx

hopeishere · 23/09/2023 17:43

Sounds very stressful. Stand your ground.
