Gen Z can’t work with people with different views?

MaggieBsBoat · 22/09/2023 20:25

I saw this on my LinkedIn feed just now and have been thinking about it. I’ve been ‚disowned‘ (for want of a better term ‘by a few gen z family members as I don’t agree with them on things and I often wondered how common this was. Anyone else? If so, why do you think that is? For me if was because I’m a TERF (apparently).

Gen Z can't work with people with different views says Channel 4 boss

Channel 4 boss Alex Mahon (pictured) said 'particularly post-pandemic' Gen Z youngsters 'haven't got the skills to discuss' and 'haven't got the skills to disagree'.

I also don't agree, I have two Gen Z DD's, they are anti self ID and agree with JKR. One has a post op trans friend, who is also against self ID and is a Gen Z, but they have friends who are in favour. There's differing opinions in their peer groups on all matters. This is as ageist as saying all over 55s are bigoted.

PleaseGiveMeBackMySummer · 22/09/2023 21:08

I find a lot of millennials intolerant, and bigoted too, and they cannot stand anyone having an opinion that doesn't coincide with their (far left) views. Some Gen Z are like this, but not quite as bad as some millennials IMO and IME. People born circa 1988-ish to 2000-ish are the worst. (Again, IMO and IME, and based on people I know.)

Not ALL of them, but out of all the generations, the people born in that 12-13 year span have that intolerant 'cancel culture,' need to take your words out of your mouth and look at them, before you say them wankery about them.

I find it inexplicable that they are so nasty and vitriolic about their own family members (parents/aunts and uncles/grandparents.) I wonder if they can actually hear themselves and the way they rant on?

And I wonder if they will look back in 20 years or so, and realise how stupid and narrow minded they sounded?! 😬

MrsTerryPratchett · 22/09/2023 21:08

Dissenting voices are bullied off the board.

Lots of people disagreeing with you isn't bullying. And on the contrary, what I see is ploppers coming on the wind-up then buggering off because they don't have a good argument.

Maybe the issue is not 'bullying' so much as it is 'not being able to form a cogent argument'.

And no one on a message board needs to 'agree to disagree'. Not about my own rights. I can disagree and continue to do so. I don't 'agree to disagree' with forced birthers either. It's my uterus, I don't call it a tie.

Classic mumsnet only having an issue with ageism when it’s aimed at older women but they are perfectly happy with it in reverse.

Thing is, when ageism is aimed at older people, it's always a lot more nasty, vile, and vitriolic. To the point of younger people wishing death on older people. And shit like 'throw them out of their council houses so my cousin and her 5 kids can have it, coz she is more 'entitled.' And over privileged boomers and their free uni education and solid gold pension plans la la la.'

There is WAY more hate for older people than young on here by MILES! You're deluded if you think the dissing of younger people reaches anywhere NEAR the dizzy heights of putrid hatred that it does when it's people over 60.

MaggieBsBoat · 22/09/2023 21:10

I think you should read the OP again. SMH

That’s the thing my gen z kids and others I’ve met are definitely very liberal and accepting. So I do wonder where the stereotypes and generalising comes from. They always come from somewhere.

I imagine they disowned you because you read the Daily Mail. Fair game I reckon.

That’s aimed at this @allhellcantstopusnow

Yep that's me. We're fucking ace. Grin

Echobelly · 22/09/2023 21:16

Like anything else, some are some aren't.

Also sometimes what people mean when they say 'Can't work with people with different views' it means 'Won't tolerate racism, sexism, homophobia etc and it's making me uncomfortable which isn't fair'

TheGuv1982 · 22/09/2023 21:18

I have a lot of people under me, and can honestly say boomers give me far more issues than the young uns - if you over look behaviour out of work (social events ect) - which is all part of growing up.

MrsTerryPratchett · 22/09/2023 21:21

Highandlows · 22/09/2023 21:10

Gen X is the best 😊

Everyone knows that.

Why are we so great?

Dymaxion · 22/09/2023 21:23

▪︎ Boomers are so called "greedy, selfish, racists"
▪︎ Millennials are so called " lazy, avocado guzzling, snowflakes"
▪︎Gen Z are so called "rude, intolerant gobshites"

As a Gen X, we have the happy circumstance of looking after the boomers, employing the millennials and also looking after the Gen Z, whilst going through the menopause, its absolute laugh a minute City over here !

MrsTerryPratchett · 22/09/2023 21:21

Everyone knows that.

Why are we so great?

I think its because we embody the "Come and have a go, if you think you're hard enough" spirit

As @Dymaxion explains it - we are putting up with enough shit.
We give zero fucks about generalisation of our generation (or other generations for that matter)

MrsTerryPratchett · 22/09/2023 21:21

Everyone knows that.

Why are we so great?

WHY? 😊 We lived through the cool late 1970s and 1980s as kids/teens/young adults, some of us were punks, or mods, or skins, we all remember disco, great 1970s and 1980s films, and all the brilliant music and how excited we were for a new video by our favourite music star, and we all knew every song on the most popular 15 or 20 albums.

We had life without social media and the internet, and only had home phones/landlines, we had skateboarding, we had caravan holidays, we had long hot summers, and fun Autumns, we had great traditional Christmases (where we weren't at war, or super poor, but also weren't super well off and were happy with little.)

3 or 4 generations of a family lived within 10 to 20 minutes walk, we queued together for a film at the cinema for 4 hours, we walked home from clubs at 3am after dancing and drinking for 6 hours, (when we were 17-24ish,) and we played with our mates on bikes all day in summer from 9am to 9pm, (when we were 10 to 15!) And our mums were (mostly) at home for us when we needed them. Jobs seemed to be easier to get, and debt was much less, and we were happy with less. Very few of us were materialistic.

Being Gen X fucking ROCKS! Grin

Dymaxion · 22/09/2023 21:39

Every Gen X woman I know has the 'special face' which is combination of 'Oh fuck !, Really !, slightly interested polite smile, combined with eyes that are away off checking lists in their brain, so a glazed look over peoples shoulders, whilst perspiring and wondering what the chuff they are going to make for Dinner or tea, depending on geography and socio-economic class'

Don't under any circumstances ask them for their opinion on anything at this point in time, because you will get it and you probably won't like it Grin

Awww, 😊 I made myself nostalgic too! 😆

Ooooh, something else I wanted to add, (did anyone else do this?) Getting the CHRISTMAS TV TIMES and highlighting all the good programmes coming up over the Christmas and New year break? Grin Much less listings then as it was just BBC1 and BBC2 and ITV. (Ch 4 and Ch5 came in early 1980s and late 1990s,) and all the cable and satellite was not around til umm, mid 1990s???

DialSquare · 22/09/2023 21:45

Yep!
I still buy the Radio Times every year as a tradition!

Dymaxion · 22/09/2023 21:46

@PleaseGiveMeBackMySummer the heady delights of making a mix tape for someone you fancied, the amount of effort you went to, to show someone you quite liked them !

Its like you are me @Dymaxion 🙂

I made that exact point this week.
On a work conference call, someone said
" I sent an email asking for everyone's opinion on X, Y and Z and only Minou123 sent me a response back"
I said
"Well, if ask for my opinion, I'll always give you my opinion!"

Were you on my work conference call? 😁

Puzzledandpissedoff · 22/09/2023 21:49

Changingplace · 22/09/2023 20:32

I’ve seen this in the workplace, a real inflexibility and lack of comprehension from a younger generation that other people can have valid different opinions but you can still work alongside them.

So have I, but I wouldn't say it's a majority thing - just restricted to those who are so unintelligent that they consider cancelling someone on SM the be-all and end-all

Happily, all those who are capable of occasionally looking up from their phones discover there's a real world out there, where people share different views without angst

gawditswindy · 22/09/2023 21:53

My younger colleague was triggered by feckin EVERYTHING!
