Double Yolkers

EatsYummySprouts · 22/09/2023 18:11

I am a lover of eggs, and have a boiled egg with toast soldiers every day for breakfast.

I buy eggs from various sources, often from a local farm.

As a child, I can clearly remember it being a real treat to get a double yolker.

I have not had one for years and years.

Has anyone had a double yolker lately?

Good point! No I haven’t. And I buy ‘decent’ eggs too. Now I want one (well, two).

Ricochetsandwhich · 22/09/2023 18:13

I had 3 n the same box a few years ago. Wish I was superstitious I’m sure I’d have been able to read something into it!

YolandiFuckinVisser · 22/09/2023 18:13

I've had a few recently, Aldi Extra Large

AllTheWatersTurnedToClouds · 22/09/2023 18:14

Ii bought a dozen from a farmers market a couple of years ago and they were ALL double yolkers

They fuck up your baking though Grin

Cookerhood · 22/09/2023 18:14

For a while you could buy them, but I must admit I haven't seen them for ages.

Jennalong · 22/09/2023 18:15

We buy from a local farm also . Used to double and even triple ( a few times ) however this year , not a single double.

DixonD · 22/09/2023 18:15

Only from when we had our own chickens. The ones with a double yolk can be very large, so perhaps not “desirable” for the supermarket?

Sleepo · 22/09/2023 18:15

I once had 6 in a box but that was 20 years ago.

erikbloodaxe · 22/09/2023 18:16

When I had a farm I had them everyday when the hens first started laying.

LynetteScavo · 22/09/2023 18:16

Would you notice a double yolker if it were hard boiled? I haven't had one for years either. I might start buying big eggs to see if I can find one.

Panda368 · 22/09/2023 18:17

I once got a box of 6 normal eggs which all turned out to be double yolkers from Tesco.

To this day no one believes this happened to me.

TribeD · 22/09/2023 18:17

I do, a few times a year, but then I get eggs from a farmer friend so whether that makes a difference I don't know.

285NeuerNamen · 22/09/2023 18:18

We had two in a standard box from Tesco last week. Not had one for ages before that though.

ScrambledSmegs · 22/09/2023 18:18

If the double yolkers were fertilised and left with the hen to hatch, what would happen? Would you actually get two chicks, or would one absorb the other yolk?

Edinvillian · 22/09/2023 18:18

Had one yesterday. Also a couple of months ago, bought a tray of 30 and about 90% were double yolkers. The seller said they were new hens, whatever that means 😂

ScrambledSmegs · 22/09/2023 18:19

Actually maybe all chicken eggs are fertilised. I can't remember my basic biology, off to check.

nadine90 · 22/09/2023 18:23

Hmm, not in the last few years. Got a few in a pack of the blue Aldi eggs about 4 years ago! We kept buying them for a while in hopes of more doubles

I’ve had this too. Thought it was pretty cool, but not much more. Then I saw a story about someone with a similar box in the DM. If only I’d realised my double yolkers were of national interest, I could have monetised my mildly interesting experience.

SiobhanSharpe · 22/09/2023 18:24

@ScrambledSmegs eggs sold commercially are not fertilised in the main. It doesn't pay to keep Cockerels unless you're going to hatch the eggs. And i think most egg producers buy in female chicks.

RightSaidFred72 · 22/09/2023 18:25

I had all 6 in a box as doubles last year.

I wish I'd done a Daily Fail piece but didn't realise how rare it was until I googled it when they'd all been eaten Grin

Thanks @SiobhanSharpe, I thought that was the case but then doubt crept in!

Medusaismyhero · 22/09/2023 18:36

Chicken keeper here (well actually DS 9 is). PPs are correct it tends to happen more frequently with new layers (young hens) who are still working out the kinks in their egg production.

They can also lay soft shells (no actual egg shell just the membrane holding it all in 🤢).

I suspect the reduction in double yolkers is tied to commercial preference for generic laying hens rather than specific breeds. Not basing that on anything scientific mind you - just our own experience with keeping specialised/more traditional breeds.

Could just as easily be that the eggs of new layers aren't put into general circulation until they become more uniform (and less likely to be double yolkers). Size can vary pretty wildly when they start laying too.

Freezingcoldinseptember · 22/09/2023 18:38

Aren't double ones from older chickens? Prob don't live long enough in the egg industry...
